  • An in depth look at Brads abrasive paste / extra fine sanding paste and Tung Wax Finish that is made by hand, with only FOOD SAFE ingredients, ALL NATURAL abrasive paste for woodturning and Tung Wax Finish friction polish are becoming popular among the woodturning community I wanted to make a video explaining the ingredients used as well as how I typically apply both my Extra Fine Sanding Paste and Tung Wax Finish. Contrary to what's been said my homemade abrasive paste and Tung wax finish are not competitors with Acks abrasive paste or Yorkshire Grit. Unlike one of them I will never put down their product because they both have their place. My homemade abrasive paste was made to be less course that acks abrasive paste but more course than yorkshire grit. There is no 1 product that can do everything. Pick the abrasive paste and finish that works best for the project at hand.

    In the vast world of woodturning, woodturners have a huge amount of options when it comes to selecting a woodturning finish for their bowl turning, spindle turning, hollow forms and much more. I struggled to find a woodturning finish that I was happy with, so I began to develop my own. My homemade, food safe Tung Wax finish was just meant to be something I made for my own personal turnings. But when I saw how well and long lasting it preformed I knew others would enjoy using it as well. I chose pure Tung oil to be my main ingredient because it is one of only a few "curing oils" in the world. Even though it is expensive and cuts in on profit, it provides a food safe richness and luster to the wood unmatched by any other oil in my opinion. Mixed that with a blend of food safe waxes and the Tung Wax Finish was created for not only woodturning but anything woodworking that needs a food safe finish. After that I wanted to complete a nice woodturning finishing kits so I began to develop an abrasive paste (Sanding Paste) for woodturning. What makes my woodturning abrasive paste different that others? The biggest difference is that I intentionally keep my mix thicker than any other abrasive paste because I feel it helps suspend the abrasive more evenly throughout the mixture. Brads abrasive paste is truly the "goldilocks" of woodturning abrasive pastes for the professional and DIY

    I often friction polish in some TnT linseed oil and then get a stick of carnauba/beeswax and just glob it in and buff off with a bit of brown paper bag. These are great products you got there.

    Great video. I like the side by side comparisons. Questions:
    How water proof are these methods? Will this hold up to multiple dish washings?
    How long will just using the tung wax take to cure / harden?
    Thanks!

    • @RatedRWoodturning
      @RatedRWoodturning  Před 3 lety

      Well you should never put any wood items you really care about in the dishwasher. Is it going to be as durable as say a Poly or a lacquer? No way close. But I’d definitely take it head to head with any other solvent free, natural finish out there. If you choose to be a masochist (yes I’m joking) and use a dishwasher, I’d recommend reapplying after each washing. Tung oil is one of the few oils that will penetrate and cure to help protect from water absorption but a dishwasher is just too harsh for me to guarantee anything.

    Will the oil really soak in with all those layers of shellac?

    • @RatedRWoodturning
      @RatedRWoodturning  Před 3 lety

      Yes and no... you're right, there is a point where it wouldnt. On a typical project you'll only see me use 1 to 2 coats of shellac as a sealer and in those cases, yes the tung oil will still penetrate into the wood. In this video I was mostly trying to just show the difference it makes and how you can control the shine. Since this piece of cedar was so thirsty it didnt give as good an example as I would of liked. But hopefully most get the idea.

  • @Amybaumgart
    @Amybaumgart Před rokem +1

    Hey Brad, I have your products and enjoy them. However, for various reasons it had been a while since I used the tung wax finish and when I went to use it a heavy film had developed over the top of what was in my pot and I had to waste a lot of it to remove that. Any thoughts as to why that would have happened? The lid was on tight. Any thoughts as to how to prevent that in the future? Thanks for a great product.

    • @RatedRWoodturning
      @RatedRWoodturning  Před rokem

      The tung oil reacts with air which starts the curing process. Same thing happens to poly and most other finishes over time. This is a big reason I chose to sell it in smaller jars. I found those plastic lids would sometime warp when tightened too much and not seal as well as I would like. BUT the good news is I am phasing out the plastic jars because I have found some glass "mason" type jars that seal way better. I also shrink wrap the jars the same day it is made and jared to increase the freshness until delivery. If you can feel free to shoot me an email, I'd love to discuss this in more detail and see what I can do to help.

    • @RatedRWoodturning

      Tung oil comes from the Tung nut... but here's where it gets weird, even though its commonly called a Tung nut, it is actually a seed. So its actually kind of controversial 🤣
