To everybody who snarks "Why couldn't that supposedly brilliant Professor fix a few holes in a boat?"...this first season episode explains why. First, he had to make nails...and couldn't forge them properly without blacksmithing tools. Second, the Skipper covers the entire Minnow in the glue, so that at the end of the episode, the boat completely disintegrates. There IS no boat for the Professor to fix.
@@LindaMerchant-bq2hp Not to delve too deeply into what is, after all, just a little fantasy-comedy show...I think what confuses people are the opening credits, which shows the Minnow intact, except for the hole in the hull.
I'll say this for the Professor, he can make a radio out of coconuts, but he can't patch the holes in the boat. At least he tries. Very bad at it, but he tries, nonetheless.
I'm sure even Gilligan would hate to think what would've happened if they actually made it out to sea and the boat started falling apart, that's why he didn't say it.
The Skipper must have lathered the entire boat inside and out with that glue, the whole thing probably wouldn't have gone all to pieces like that otherwise.

Great observation - and this was taped decades before mobile phones became available! They look like a pack of Chesterfields - he should have had his shirt covering them better. Also, in real life, Bob Denver was a heavy smoker; Alan Hale and Russell Johnson were smokers as well but you didn't see anyone smoke on the show - although some episodes did reference having ashtrays.
Funny how Gilligan was just standing there, holding the boat's steering wheel, gaping open-mouthed at the boat falling apart.
"Don't worry, Skipper! I'll hold her together for you!" You, Gilligan, hold the boat together? Oh, yeah, that's a laugh!
OMG the sound effects when the minnow fell apart had me in tears....

He can get the radio working by way of sea ocean water yet not rebuild the minnow
One of very few times where it wasn't Gilligan's fault that they couldn't get off the island.

There was times when gillgan did right things saved the other castaways from the natives and warningbof the syrup glue
apparently the glue doesn't work on the Minnow but instead causes the ship to fall into pieces
Actually the glue was fine, but doesn't work too well after 3 days.
At least Gilligan saved the most important piece of the boat.
This must have been the only Gilligan's Island episode where they tried to fix the boat.
