For those who wish to compare Maradona and Messi, you have to remember that when Maradona played, defenders were allowed to frequently make challenges that in Messi's days would be an automatic red card. So it was harder to play in those days and I don't think Messi would have been as effective in the Maradona's era, but I think Maradona would have found it easier to play in the later times. So for me the question is easy - Maradona is the better player but Messi is great too. You need to be at least 50 in age to have an opinion on this or you will not have seen enough of Maradona when he was playing.

I might add back in Maradona's day, you could only qualify for the European cup (today's champion's league) by either being the defending European champion or the league champion. There was no other way unlike today where you finish 4th in the league and still qualify for UCL if you belong to the top 4 countries. Football in this respect is different from all other sports in terms of its sea-change in the last 30-32 years. Seen in this light, CR7 and Messi's achievements great though they are need to be put in perspective. The champion's league only started admitting teams finishing second in the league from the 97-98 season and 4 teams per country only from the 1999-2000 season. Don't even get me started on how today's top teams can jam pack their squads with world-class players.

There have been many Great players like Pele, Beckenbaur, Cruyff, Best, Maldini, Zidane, R9, Ronaldinho, CR7 and Messi etc etc but what separates Maradona from the rest is that he was able to win trophies with mediocre teams! Also, his haters always accuse him of using drugs but what they don't realise is that cocaine is not a performance enhancing drug, rather it makes a person weak, so he would have been even stronger than he was if not for the drugs! 😂

Still it is regrettable that he could have probably won 2 more World cups if he didn't have his addiction problems. In one sense, modern football is better in terms of players being better educated and more professionalism to avoid the dangers of bad habits/addictions (think Maradona, George Best, Gazza etc).Ultimately, sporting achievement is not the be all and end all.
