  • In this Video I take you all through how I built the roof in my van from start to finish and completely from scratch. It has separate lighting circuits for the puck lights (12V) as well as separate circuits for LED strip downlighting which really give it a great feel in the van.
    Ive been busy with work but this took me about 4 weeks on and off maybe doing the odd hour here and there - but total build time would of been done in a weekend if i gave myself the time and smashed 16 hour days!
    A few tips:
    Make sure to wire your van BEFORE the roof goes on - i was lazy and i was a mission to do.
    Get 6mm Ply for the roof - mine is 12mm - It’s too thick but still looks good - im getting a pop top next July so the root is just a temporary thing.
    Get a mate to help you - i used a friend for 5 mins to help me lift the roof into place - i reckon i did about 6 dry fits on my own - i wouldn’t recommend it unless you want a hernia.
    Enjoy! Blue Skys - Rich

    That's a great idea with the wooden slats for panels. You could just pre-built them to fit and attach them with wing nuts so they can be removed. Install led strip multi color lighting.

      thanks for the support! 💪🏻💪🏻 it’s only a temporary measure anyway as I’ll get a pop top next year - and I wanted a clean atheistic so no fasteners on show.

    That a great job looks heavy though

      Yeah it is heavy haha - i was actually going to use a thin balsa wood with contours cut into it - but wanted to build my own. Its a stop gap anyway as in June next year ill get a pop top done - which will promt another few videos as ill have to remove almost everything from inside!

    great video this is exactly what i want to do with mine, what size cable did you use for the wiring?

    • @richard_builds_it
      @richard_builds_it  Před 9 měsíci +1

      For the 12V LED and the LED Puck Lights I used twin core 1.5mm Squared wire - just make sure to check using online tables that the wire you are using is suitable for the current you are drawing for that appliance! (and also use 6mm ply not 12mm!)

    Looks good...What size battens did you use?

    • @richard_builds_it
      @richard_builds_it  Před 9 měsíci +1

      they were 45mm x 20mm deep and I got the 3.0m lengths as the roof was approx 2525mm in length. the Ply was an 10ft x 6ft (3050mm x 1525mm) single sheet as I didn’t want any joins. but should of used 6mm instead of 12mm 🤣

      Thanks mate its come out really good. Ive got a L3H2 boxer i wanna do the same thing too...I didnt even know you could buy them in 10x6 sheets where did you get them from?

      @ChrisYid Před 9 měsíci +1

      @@richard_builds_it thanks for that mate I'll check it out online see if I can get any oversized sheets nearer me... yeah im in Kent so won't be doing Plymouth 😅
      See I like your size battens i don't think I'd want any wider. My personal preference.
      Thank You
      All the best
