  • This is the 1st video of a new weekly Great Aeolian-Skinner Organ demonstration by 1 of the 3 Cathedral Organists, each Monday afternoon at 1PM. The Great Organ will be briefly discussed and played, and the Cathedral is inviting anyone interested to drop on by for this free, 20-30 minute demonstration!
This is Bruce Neswick, the Cathedral's Director of Music, demonstrating the organ.
A few notes on this recording. I used a tripod with my Canon S5, and sat in the first row of the Great Choir. The State Trumpet is heard at the end of the video.
Bruce told me afterwards that the Quimby Organ Co. technicians have finished their work, and Doug Hunt is flying solo - which means that the organ is tonally 'finished' at this point. Also, one of the exciting 'additions' to the Quimby rebuild is the re-instatement of the 1911 Skinner Pedal 32' Bombarde, renamed 32' Contre Ophicleide. This stop was disconnected from the 1953-54 AS console rebuild, but the pipes remained 'winded' (still in place) in the chambers. Bruce didn't have a chance to play it today (he forgot about it until I mentioned the stop knob on the console), but he mentioned that this stop is just phenomenal!

@jockboy69 Silly idea! The State Trumpet is the crown of this organ and in my opinion the most beautiful trumpet ever built, why should visiting organists and their audience of course not have the right to enjoy this unique and breathtaking sound?

Great work. Maybe I can plug some of these pix into my old Alec Wyton uploads. ;-) I'm still trying to schedule a visit to NYC & St. John the Unifinished, & I intend for it to revolve around this magnificent instrument.

The Trompette Militaire is under lock at Liverpools Anglican cathedral i suppose it needs to be considering its the loudest in the world!!!

I doubt that the Liverpool Cathedral stop is the "loudest in the world!!!!" It operates on 30 inches of wind pressure whereas the State Trumpet at St. John the Divine operates on 50".

How many people were there for the organ? Are there any plans to let people up next to the console?
Anyways, thank you so much for bringing this to CZcams. Your videos are spreading the word of this fantastic organ's rebirth!

Are those state Trumpets under lock and key ? The late Christopher Dearnley Organist of St Paul's Cathedral London where I am from had a key fitted in the1977 Mander rebuild so visiting orgainst's were not able to always use them in recitals lol.

@adzeuph5 "We don't use that stop during communion very often" is what I believe he said.

@lustful2 No. Although apparently Doug Hunt is a bit annoyed at peoples' tendencies to use the trumpet.

@lustful2 Too funny. As well they should have them under lock and key. Sometimes too much testosterone, masquerading as a trumpet blast! Don't let them use it! Fabulous idea.

E' un'organo tipicamente americano, no francese no italiano no tedesco no spagnolo; conosco la cattedrale per aver ascoltato una messa molti anni orsono in fondo alla cattedrale; ho ascoltato anche il coro.

Why don't he just play some music and stop playing around. This seems to be one LARGE, powerful ORGAN.
