Tonight at 7 PM, the NYCAGO airs our third episode of the Pipe Organs of NYC series, taking the viewer on a virtual musical tour of one of the largest churches in the world containing the definitive organ of its style.
Saint John the Divine is the Cathedral Church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. Famous for its size and for the variety of events hosted within it, Saint John’s is one of the most recognizable buildings in the City. Equally renowned in the musical world is the Great Organ of the Cathedral, widely considered to be the masterpiece of American organ building.
Most unfortunately, on Palm Sunday of 2019 the Cathedral suffered a fire that once again silenced the instrument, after only a decade since its reinstallation. It is currently awaiting restoration, and the videos you hear in this episode were recorded before then.
Throughout its history, the Cathedral has welcomed countless musicians of every kind under its roof, with regular performances by the New York Philharmonic, Musica Sacra, and the Oratorio Society of New York. Dr. Norman Coke-Jephcott, Alec Wyton, and Bruce Neswick number among the past directors, and Kent Tritle now heads the music department which includes professional and volunteer choirs and a chorister program.

One of the great organs of the world!
This organ has a sound, either loud,soft or in between, that sets it apart from all other organs in the world.
This organ,which is two thirds the size of the organs housed in Riverside and St.Barts, shows that "size" doesn't determine the quality or sound of an organ.
The most important stop in any organ is the room in which it lives and SJD is no exception!

Seriously, what is it with SJD and fires? Two similar events in twenty years. They may want to invest in weatherproof shutters for the chambers.
