Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa-COMESA- has called for more interventions aimed at scaling up agricultural production among African Countries.
COMESA Assistant Secretary General DR. MOHAMED KADAH says African countries have spent approximately 90 billion US dollars annually in importation of food products over the last five years.
Speaking during the Regional Economic Communities on the implementation of the Common African Agro-Parks #CAAPs, Dr. KADAH revealed that the figure is expected to rise to a staggering 110 billion US dollars annually by 2025.
He explained that the implementation of CAAPs will assist in shaping the continent's agricultural and food systems landscape thereby reducing food importation.
Dr. KADAH added that CAAPs will play a significant role in transforming Africa’s agriculture sector and enable the continent to feed itself hence becoming a food basket for other parts of the world.
He says COMESA remains committed to supporting the continent’s agricultural transformation through various initiatives aimed at enhancing favorable policy environments, competitive market access and removing technical trade barriers.
African Union Development Agency Sustainable Land and Water management team leader MAMADOU DIAKHITE emphasized the need for strong collaboration among African countries in improving soils and water quality.
