I would recommend modding a gameboy or something like that for a start. They're easy to open and there are a lot of ideas and tutorials online you can use. Sadly a lot of the dedicated websites with parts for them is in USA or China, so if you live in EU you will have to wait alot to get parts.

That was me until just last week. I had an old, half-dead 2008 HP6730b laptop with Windows XP lying around the house and while I was able to make it somewhat usable again by installing Puppy Linux (Tahr Pup, I think) on it last December, this video inspired me to replace the original hard drive with a WD (Green) 240GB SSD. With the latest version of Puppy Linux, I've got a great desktop replacement that actually matches my 2014 MacBook Air.
Well, not quite - they each have their own strengths and weaknesses, but it's pretty close.
If you know what you're doing, stuff like this can be pretty easy and fun, and you'll feel a sense of achievement by being able to breathe new life back into an old computer.

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that is still good for light work and traveling, but not for main use. I upgraded it with 16GB of DDR3 from 4GB which is total overkill for it, and a 240GB SSD and that brought it back from the dead. It went from unusable to generally slow, but kind of snappy. If the RAM had been soldered on and the storage non-upgradable, it would have been retired by now. So yeah, planned obsolescence is a thing.

Pretty cool! I have a late 2009 MacBook as well; bought it for a little under $100 more than three years ago as it didn't come with a hard drive or power adapter cable (the latter of which I already had from an older failing MacBook), and I upgraded the RAM to 8 GB and installed a 256 GB SSD into it, but I kept the SuperDrive intact as I can still appreciate having an optical disc drive. I love how user-service friendly those unibody MacBooks are (at my computer tech job I recently swapped the hard drives in a bunch of them with blank ones I installed the Mac OS onto for resell). But since it's still 11 years old and cannot run the new Mac operating systems, I plan to buy a 13" Touch Bar MacBook Pro soon (Intel version, as I'm not fully ready to jump into Apple's M1-series Macs yet) but still hold onto the 2009 MacBook for running older 32-bit apps on and for burning DVDs of home movies and such.
My main computer currently is a 2012 quad-core i5 Mac Mini, upgraded with a 960 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, and for optical discs I have an LG external Blu-Ray burner hooked up to it :P

Or be smarter and just get 2 1TB HDD for less the price probably coming up to $100 for both so now $300 and the ram doesn't cost anything but at least $50-70 dollars and you're only allowed 16gb anyways on a MacBook so total $370 for a 10 year old MacBook that works way better than a $500 Windows laptop, $400 Chromebook depending on the size, and over $900 New MacBook depending on the size. Plus the cover doesn't look too bad which is another $5 if you wanna cover the scratches and the keyboard keys replacement probably $20 or less. So running you an estimate of $395. Again only an estimate you could get certain things cheaper or even settle with 2 500gb HDD which is even cheaper. It's up to you. But you can make this laptop work as a budget winner and would work better than modern day laptops that again are way overpriced.

Made the calculations it is less than 300$ for a 500GB ssd a new battery and a new keyboard and a new cover and 200$ for the macbook and that is 450$-500$ and it is way better than alot of laptops at that price range and you can sell the parts you swapped out and make a few bucks out of it [30 max]

I done something similar with mine - a mid 2012 - I got it for free broken, and fixed it.
Apple said it only supported 8gig of RAM, but it blatantly takes 16. With that, and an SSD it is completely usable, even running some heavy stuff, video editing etc.

Yep. Modern userfeel upgrades have been mostly in the random IO of an SSD, and macOS post Snow Leopard really seems to hate rust drives more than most OSs. Had the 2010 MacBook in the family until this year and with an SSD and maxed RAM it felt perfectly fine for day to day web browsing and Office. The most missed modernity's were more in the screen and battery life.

    • @mikee3216
      @mikee3216 Před 6 lety +5

      I know that feel man.
I upgraded my 2010 MBP with an SSD, put the original Toshiba HDD in the optical drive slot and made them a hybrid drive. Then 16GB of RAM off eBay for $30 gave it the capability to run basically infinite Chrome tabs. Had to replace the keyboard due to water damage last year but parts were cheap and the process was a lot of fun. I'm going to miss this upgradability when I have to let go of this gem.

I enjoyed this video. I watched it sometime back and it inspired me to upgrade my mid-2010 MacBook Pro. I got the computer new when I started college. It got me all the way through college and Then some. I had given up on it because it was getting slow. I watched this and decided to upgrade. I opted for a small 128gb ssd because I didn’t need a lot of storage. Then got the 8gb ram upgrade. It sped the computer up tremendously! It became much more usable. I was using it for a work computer. Now, I will say, for what I was doing I didn’t need maximum performance because my job just required me to get online and use a software that’s online. But speeding up the MacBook made it more pleasant to use. Faster startups and shutdowns. Quicker functions. I didn’t do a battery replacement but kind of wished I did.
So for me, I spend like $150ish maybe a tad under that. $150 vs $1000 for a new MacBook Air was a better option for my needs.

They aren't meant to change all the time. Change over refinement defeats the purpose of making something good into something great. You don't exactly manage that by radically changing it every single year. When you pick a design and stick with it, it makes it easy to improve and make it better for the current day and the future. Think about it this way. If you purchase something that's great and does everything that you need it to do with no fuss, what's the point of changing it? Let's not forget the things that can inevitably stop working or things that are flat out inconvenient for you now where the previous thing was perfect for you.
Clearly you don't understand the concept and need to do a little more thinking/research to figure this out. Not all change is good, frankly most change is negative in one way or another.

Good video and Thank You! This is a bit off topic, but I came across an internal access only HDD laptop that Windows 10 had crashed due to faulty updates plus having more back doors for malware and viruses to enter. This laptop is less than 3 years old. W10 updates, malware, and viruses had caused this poor laptop to destroy a portion of the HDD by constantly running. Needless to say that when I tried reloading any larger OS like Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Ubuntu, and Mint it tried loading the OS and those larger OS's would cease installing. I ultimately used the much smaller Lubuntu and it installed fine - without a problem and it works like you want. Eventually this laptop will have to be cracked open and the HDD replace, but I bought a little time from doing so and Lubuntu is FREE. The owner while not adept at using Lubuntu/Ubuntu was still happy to have his computer working once again. I of course told him what eventually will be involved to correct the issue - HDD and OS replacement. Praise The Lord and Godspeed to you all - Psalm 28:7!!

Great build idea! I’ve been considering if I want to invest money in my aluminum unibody MacBook from about 2009. I use adobe CS5 on occasion and have the master collection and I hear it won’t run on late OS upgrades so I’ve not upgraded. I just can’t justify buying a new MacBook for now.

I did almost exactly everything you did internally. Opted for just one SSD because this era of disk drive is in my opinion the last good non-blu-ray drive and I do use it. I intend to eventually find a casing to make that drive external and toss a 2nd 250GB Evo in for RAID.

I just build a $160 Mid2010 MacBook Pro that I got from Ebay. I added Crucial 120GB SSD, 8GB ram, replace couple of screw. It works perfectly as my daily laptop for word processing, email and youtube.

I still use my early 2011 13 inch Macbook Pro. I upgraded it with 8 GB of RAM and a SSD a couple of years ago. It still works perfectly and is great for browsing, media consumption, office work and some light photo editing.
