I did this to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro a few years ago. Took out the optical drive, gave it dual 2.5" SSDs in RAID, 16GB of DDR3 (total overkill, but it was cheap) and swapped the battery for a new one. Still kind of slow because it's a Core 2 Duo... But it works! And it actually has more RAM and SSD storage than the base 2019 model... Being able to easily swap the battery is also a huge plus. New models = planned obsolescence.

@@potato4987 I have the mid-2010 13" and it does work for that model, don't know about the others. But honestly, at this point the CPU in it is such a massive bottleneck (it's a Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz) that putting 16GB of RAM in it makes little sense, you will never be able to take advantage of it. When I did it in 2015, I could still open 100 tabs in Chrome on that machine so I could use the RAM, but today I don't know if the CPU could handle anything like that at all. Save your money, the cheapest laptop today would run circles around that 2010 MacBook Pro.

  • @cantbudgeit

I recently did the same exact thing, same mid 2012 MacBook pro, upgraded the 2x2gb ram to 1x8 and 1x2, and installed an SSD as well ask keep the original 500gb spin drive in the disk drive slot. It's my favorite laptop that I have owned and often chose to work on this instead of my big gaming rig. This MacBook is going to be my buddy until the bitter end. Glad to see videos of people repurposing used hardware instead of just buying new, there is a lot of silicon and money to be saved out there.

The horizontal resolution is only a bit better than 1080p (1242p). Even if you watch the video through a microscope you probably won't notice a difference between 1080 and 4K. I'm still rocking my 2012 15" Macbook pro with replaced battery, HDD to SSD, and the wifi card cable broke and got replaced, and upgraded to 16GB RAM (absolutely necessary IMO). It is a killer good machine for the age, my only issue is the replacement battery has some minor issues with charge speed, and I've gone through 2 or 3 charge cables and am about to need another one. The serviceability of these last non-retina Pro's is really really nice to have, and has given mine a lot of life. Also the chassis is fantastic. Mine is not quite as dented as the one in the video, but it has plenty of dings, and I literally had to take a hammer and screwdriver to bend the frame back into shape after a drop bent a corner in and stopped the bottom from sitting flush. That was 4 years ago, it has fallen so many times, been mistreated, been opened dozens of time, had flaky screen connections and USB ports from time to time, but it still works, and it still works great. I honestly don't know what I'll do when it finally dies, new Macbook's don't interest me at all, but having a MacOS device has been nice to have in addition to my gaming PC. I was literally gaming on it, AAA titles (on lowest of low settings by the end) till only a few years ago still. It's been a great machine. IMO the best Macbook Pro's are these ones.

I used and loved this for years, as did my parents. I upgraded mine to 16GB of RAM, installed a 480GB SSD (which I still use today on a different computer) and replaced the DVD drive with a second hard drive using a special mounting bracket. I would have appreciated a higher resolution screen, and touch capability (modern Mac laptops still don't have this, I guess so Apple can sell more iPads..) but I really loved this laptop.
Apple's successor laptops with their lack of ports and upgradability actually drove me away from being a lifelong Mac user and I swapped to cheap laptops running Linux. I advised my parents to keep using their 2012 Macbook Pros as long as possible, and avoid upgrading if they can.

And the Pro's no longer have. My Air has a 256 gb SSD and runs a 400 gb SD card from the reader. So I can bring my music collection with me without having to resort to an external hard disk. Bought mine here in Sydney in 2014. Retail value was 2200AUD, the guy sold me for 1400AUD still on warranty.
It still holds up pretty well. Only bad thing is that it’s not upgradable.
    Great vid!
