Luke, is the early 2011 MacBook Pro A1286 anti-glare high resolution screen compatible with the 2012 model? I'm noting there's both an early and later 2011 version. Thanks! John
I got one of these from university surplus last year to hold me over until my M1 Max finally showed up, and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it ran. It really is one of the best to ever come out.
Back in August ‘22 I bought a 15” mid 2012 macbook pro for only $90 on ebay, it had a 500gb hdd and 4gb of ram. I since put 16gb of ram, a 256gb ssd, and it runs like an absolute clock for less than $200. It runs mac os ventura amazingly. Theres nothing I need a computer to do that this machine cant do, but it does get hot at times lol
i advise to clean ur fans and put some new thermal paste on the cpu. Fixes the high temperatures all the time
What tent says U should definetly do but in addition u can install mac's fan control there u can see the temps and change the fan speed accordingly
if you feel fairly crafty, i’d say try drilling holes where the fans are on the bottom cover. Though i’m not entirely sure how much hot air jetting straight on your lap or of that nature there would be
Upgrading this particular MacBook to macos ventura using open core legacy patcher would be a great video, Luke! Not a tutorial (there are lots out there), but a usability video!
I'd definitely like to see that! I wonder if graphics switching works on these old macs on Ventura. If it doesn't work that would kill either battery life or performance...
Honestly those 2012's run Ventura really well! I just upgraded one with Opencore Legacy Patcher a month ago and it's been running great. I just wish it had the higher resolution display because the lower resolution display looks pretty chunky XD
@@yukitakahashi5739 Same here. Running Ventura on my MacBook Pro 2012. It's opening apps just one second later than my M1 MacBook Pro. Not to bad.
I have a 2012 MBP 2.3ghz with anti-glare (matte) screen. I purchased it direct from Apple in 2012 and am still using it today as my secondary machine. It is maxed out with reputable ram, and upgraded to Mac OS Ventura using OCLP and I am blown away by the performance from an 11 year old computer. I also dual boot to Windows 11 for my architectural work, with windows-only apps such as Autodesk Revit. The anti-glare screen is so nice to work on when creating drawings for presentations, great experience and no glossy glass glare at all! It’s fantastic for architecture.
I have just such a one) Recently I was thinking of changing it to something newer, but I have no reason to do so) It performs all my work tasks, looks good, does not slow down) Thank you for drawing the attention of viewers to such high-quality products)🎉
My antiglare Unibody 2012 Macbook Pro is still in my possession! Recently, I experienced a problem with my keyboard after 11 years of use and had to replace it. As a result, because I had to remove the motherboard, I cleaned and de-dusted everything, even the fans. Furthermore, I cleaned the CPU and GPU of the old thermal paste before applying a new thermal paste to these surfaces. After this, I discovered that my MacBook was running quieter, the fans almost silent, and that the average CPU temperature was less than 54º. I hope this beauty lasts for many more years because I use it for most of my tasks.
Last year I was searching for one of these unibody MacBooks to use as a backup for my cd collection (I wanted the internal disk reader to keep my desk as uncluttered as possible). Scored big time on a 2012 with the 2.6 GHz cpu and the antiglare display, guy only wanted $50. Easiest purchase decision ever.
Wow, what a steal..That's the same configuration I ordered from Apple 10 years ago for $2,207 plus tax, and I still use it today.
I really wish there had been a 17” for 2012…
I would absolutely love that. There's a guy in the Low End Mac group who put a 2012 board into 17'' 2011 body, but I think he didn't manage to get everything working. The closest thing you can do is to put a 2012 bluetooth card into a 17'' 2011 MBP and use an ExpressCard with USB 3.0 ports.
@@GuillermoPaulman I tried that too, but I found it very hard to do because nothing would fit quite right. I think the motherboard of a 15" is a bit higher than that of a 17", it's a bit narrower - but not narrow enough to reroute extension cables for the ports, and I think the speaker connectors were different. It wasn't worth the hassle for me and I got a 2.5GHz 2011 17" instead, of which I then almost immediately had to replace the gpu... I am looking into putting a 6850M in place of the 6770M though. The BGA seems like it could be identical and the gpu itself isn't as plagued with issues as the 6770M. And it's more powerful of course!
I've actually almost completed a project consisting of actually upgrading the hardware (CPU and PCH) of a 2011 17" MacBook Pro logic board to Ivy Bridge components, essentially making a "real" Mid-2012 17". Right now I'm fighting with some firmware issues, but I think I'll be able to get it working.
dosdude!! The man, myth, legend! Yes, I was aware that Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge upgrades were possible, being that pinouts are the same. What about the GPU, any upgrade possible there? USB 3.0??
GPU-wise I have some ideas, but that'll be later. USB3.0 won't be usable, as the 2011 board lacks the extra pins needed for USB3.
Wow the unibody MacBook Pro has a 4K screen??? /s
Next Episode "UPGRADING A UNIBODY MAC WITH A 5K SCREEN" 😱
I think he meant that the video is in a 4K resolution but I get what you mean 😅
What would be nice would be if you could put a Retina display in a unibody
@@Valentino_Crespo he wrote /s in his comment and you still explained it…
Yes you said that you get it but… why??
@@SeshanTM Pointless you much as well just use the retina MacBook ?
Currently using the mid 2012 antiglare for college computer science. A suprisingly competent machine. I lucked out with the battery and got an essentially new one that holds a charge for hours. 16gb ram and an ssd. Can’t complain at all. The fans don’t even kick on that much
Dang you, Luke, you keep making me wanna start a collection of old mac, that is a beauty!
I use the Harry's stuff. Good value for the money, actually. Also, I had the 2012 MBP at work, and I LOVED that thing! Great video as always.
Still using this exact machine today!! Dual graphics card. Same display.
I have a late 2011 still kicking around. Specifically ordered it with that anti-glare panel. It definitely worked well in class at the time, what with a thousand fluorescent lights and windows open to the sun. And yes. I totally turfed the DVD drive for a second SSD. 16 gigs of ram too, which was not officially supported but worked just fine.
Late 2011 mbp had a gpu problem
just so you know, if your AMD gpu inevitably fails someday, it's still going to be very usable :) Typing this from a late 2011 with a broken GPU
@@arekplewa599 How did you manage it? I've cooked my early 2011 a few times, and it works, but I'm scared its gonna die again eventually.
@@TurdInternational czcams.com/video/iLft4N54zvU/video.html try this, worked fine for me
I use one as daily driver (typing this comment on it now). 17 inch with matte display 1920x1080p. Amazing machine.
I think my brother had the 17" one of these which I inherited. Definitely had a MacBook Pro with anti glare screen around this generation but it had some kinda issue which I can't remember hence it got canned
Yeah, I too have one of these exact MBPs (15", 2.7 GHz, antiglare, 500GB SSD). Over the years I swapped out the drive for a 2TB SSD, and the DVD drive for a 4TB HDD, upgraded the RAM to 16GB, and did many repairs (original logic board still going though!). It was such a capable machine that it was my only computer for ten years. It could do anything! Still working too. I literally did not replace this machine until late 2021 when I got a 16" M1 Max MacBook Pro. I think that's a machine I can make last just as long.
Love that you keep the hype for the 2012 MacBook Pro, I might just do this to mine...
It’s still a great MacBook Pro. I have one 2012, i7 2.7, 512Gb Apple SSD, 16Gb RAM with the anti glare hires screen. Still working good. Love it. Thanks for the video Luke!
I still have the 13" mid 2012 2.9 Ghz version of this and still working after changing the ssd and adding ram. It still works and for as long as you are not playing graphics intensive games, it works fine.
This was the first Macbook Pro I ever bought for myself. 2.7ghz and anti-glare screen used it for 8 years and it was so good.
I only found ONE with the anti glare display under 13 inch and nothing for 15 inch but a lot of top case displays.
Hi, I have that exact MBP with i7 2.7GHz, 16GB RAM and upgraded 1TB SSD. Very nice machine indeed. One thing though: you say at 3.50 that it has 802.11ac wifi but no, in stock form 802.11n only, like all mid 2012 MacBook Pros.
I like the high res antiglare displays, I also have them in my two 2011 MBPs.
I think there was a 802.11ac wifi card designed for unibody MBPs. It's been out of stock though for years.
@@ffpr1 802.11 ac was introduced in 2 generations newer than mid 2012 ie. late 2013. Later ac wifi cards can be installed to mid 2012 but they need aftermarket adapters for both the card itself and the antenna connectors. I am not aware of any Apple plug and play solutions to this. There are huge threads on Mac forums spanning over many years discussing how ac could be installed to unibody MPB's. It can be done but one needs to investigate first which cards are usable and where adapters can be sourced.
My daily driver is mid-2012 15". Works pretty good, even use it for business. Love this thing.
Woah, that camera pan!
I got an anti-glare 2011 15" on ebay this past summer on your recommendation for ~$220 CAD and I love it to bits. Thank you!
Hey Luke! I love ur channel, I’ve always wondered, where do u get all of your MacBook wallpapers? They’re so cool!
NIce, I like the facial hair on Luke. I have 2 unibody late 2011 and 2012 a early retina 2015 13" I caught some kind of repair fever from watching so many of Luke's videos that I rescued my 2011 from going into a trash bin by replacing the battery, upgrading the RAM and SSD as well as the wifi bluetooth card from 2.0 to 4.0. To replace one of the speakers I had to disconnect the motherboard because its located underneath, which I was a bit worried about but I took my time and was able to do many upgrades. Then I inherited the 2012 unibody last year and did some upgrades as well. I'm sentimental and can't seem to let go of my other laptops no matter how old they are. They all work for the usual tasks like web browsing, streaming, word processing and light editing. I upgraded all my MBP OS to Monterey through OCLP and they work great. I still love the 2015 as much as I love my M1 14" MBP for different reasons. I prefer the older intel keyboards better than the M1 or even M2 MBP. I try not to buy more things unless I know I'll be using them. I know they are inanimate objects but they have given me much in return so I have emotional attachments to them. I have heard many Apple fans speculating that Apple is going to return to charging their customers a fee to upgrade their OS in all their tech. If that does happen, do you think they will be more successful in purging more money out of their customers? I mean Apple is a multi billion dollar company and they seem a little lost in the last 3-5 years. I hope they stop mass producing and just focus on making beautiful looking and functioning products that work. Instead of dealing with crappy products that lead to lawsuits. Anyway despite Apple's issues the older intel MBP from 2015 to 2010 I know so many people who are still happy with their products that is saying something.
Amazing Video!
I’m still rockin my 2013 15 MBP. Amazing machine.
I have the 2010 version of this machine with the same display and it still works perfectly to this day. I still watch DVDs on it and the only thing that has nearly worn out is the battery..but that still works too, giving about an hour or so charge. The system prefs say the battery needs replacing soon but not yet. I replaced the old HD with a cheap and cheerful Crucial 256GB SSD and it is great. My newer M1 Air beats it in every possible metric, but the fact it still works 13 years later is a real world example of how good these machines are.
The funny thing is, my 2018 MacBook Pro also happens to have a 2.7 ghz quad core i7... That's not a lot of progress over 7 years.
I had this exact machine! It was the best you could buy, and the best for a LONG time.
Great review! I agree! This is the best unibody MacBook! I have, and still use, a 2012 15" MBP with a matte/anti-glare screen, however, it is only the 2.3GHz CPU. This machine replaced a 2012 15" Retina MBP with the 2.7GHz CPU and a 750GB SSD - I believe this was the largest CTO SSD at the time. I didn't like it because there was not a larger SSD option and plus it was a glossy screen. I was and still am a fan of the anti-glare/high resolution screen!
I have exactly the same model its still amazing. I also have the 2011 with same display , I am running Ventura on the 2012 MacBook Pro.
i had one i was so in love with it
for sure, these are great
Got one of these in the top trim like this one with the 2.7 i7 and good display on FaceBook for 100 dollars for the whole computer 1 year ago. Great addition to my older Intel Mac collection
I like that this variant has the silver bezel around screen, similar to style of MacBook Air of its time. I’m a fan of that old-school look. I have the last version of MacBook Air with wide silver bezel (2017 model). I have an M1 MacBook Pro now, but I still use old one sometimes. It has upgradable internal storage, now with 1TB. Also has an SD card slot, used with flush-to-side microSD card adapter, now with 1TB card. And it usually has tiny (barely sticks out) USB 3 flash drive. So 2.5TB total storage without connecting an external drive. It’s the data archive for my M1 MacBook, where I can conveniently access files. Old Macs are still quite useful.
When does your "Mac Museum" open for tours? Macintosh Plus, all the sealed "oldies", iMac G4, etc...
I still work with a 2012 Unibody Macbook pro with a core i5. I have no issues, such a loyal machine.
I really thank you for this video. I’ve been looking for a decent MacBook to use as a Linux system, while I have my other MacBook for Mac OS.
I’m so glad you made this video AFTER i finally scored the unicorn 2.7GHZ 15” I’ve been after for years… and for $60 as well. Prices on these are gonna skyrocket now that thousands of viewers realize how great these 2012s are.
I just upgraded from my beloved i5 13” 2012 to the 15”, swapping over my 8GB RAM and 525 Crucial SSD. I keep my optical drive though. It’s much too convenient for someone who still rips CDs. I just store my TBs of music on external drives.
(Un?)fortunately, i scored a 15” 2015 for just over $100 after i saw your video about it and my time with the 2012 15” was short lived. At least i finally got to own one, and still believe they’re the best MacBook ever made, by a long shot. Although the 2015 15” is a close second. I’ve been saying this for years, I’m glad you agree. I’ve made the claim for YEARS that I’d rather own any 2012 MacBook Pro than a 13” Pro up through 2016. Those minor “performance upgrades” you showed in the chart become ALOT more minor when you can upgrade the RAM to 16GB (for mere pennies too) and add a much faster SSD.
same specs as mine and I still use it today.... not great but still works
Still rocking one of these bad boys to this day!
Luke shaving in his button-up collar shirt is the highlight of this video for sure!
Mine is a Mid-2012 with 2.6GHz Core i7, 16GB of RAM from OWC, and a 2 TB Samsung EVO SSD. I also custom ordered it with the anti-glare option. I still use it every day. It is running Mac OS 10.13.6 High Sierra since I need compatibility with Nvidia CUDA drivers for Premiere Pro CS6 Mercury Playback Engine. To me it is an almost perfect laptop, the only design flaw is how close to each other are the two USB type A ports, making it difficult and sometimes even imposible to populate both ports, depending on the cable or peripherals (pen drive).
I have a mid-2012 with almost the same specs, save for the anti-glare screen. I didn’t know the anti-glare screen was an option that year, I thought the 2011 was the last model to have that
I installed Ventura on my MBP 13 mid 2012 non Retina. I used the famous Open Source and well supported patcher. The mac runs like a charm, and is even faster than when running Catalina. I can't believe it! So far, I have not seen anything that does not work.... Incredible machine.
Mine didn't get Thunderbolt but it was one of the last UMBPs to use an Nvidia graphics card. I went for the middle spec from new. It has really stood the test of time and I think the larger 17 inch chassis with more room to keep cool has had something to do with its longevity.
Still rocking a 2012 unibody. Works real well.
I just added the latest Sonoma OS to my 2014 MBP and it’s excellent. Saved me from buying a new MB ($2,000+). Apple should make their current software available for older laptops, but they’re too greedy.
I loved mine, anti-glare screen and eventual dual SSD set-up. The "upgrade" to the 2016 butterfly MBP was no upgrade at all.
Really........😴
I have 2 of these and they are so good.
Until just recently I had a mid-2012 MBP 13 that I upgraded to the max (512/240 SSDs, 16GB RAM, new battery, refreshed thermal paste, etc.). I gifted it to a friend that needed a reliable Mac and he's as happy with it as I was.
That was my first Mac: 15,4 BTO with anti glare, 512 SSD and (unfortunately) maxed out GPU. And this GPU is the only element that let it down. It is still in use today, although only at home.
What's the problem with the maxed out GPU? Mine also has the best GPU , but Photoshop can't use it for some reason
Interesting video - thanks!
I am still typing on my 2012 Retina 15inch right now, which i had been using now for 10.5 years. I finally switched to new m1 max, after delaying the decision many times.
To me the best thing about the 2012 retina was the GPU from Nvidia - which made me switch from 17inch HP mobile workstations to Apple.
It finally made it possible to do some poper 3d-work on an Apple notebook.
It's a pity that Nvidia and Apple broke upon the quality issues - i liked the combination a lot.
Apples new hardware appears good for all consumer and creator standards, and i like the my M1Max notebook.
But to me it lacks compatibility, especially as it does not meet the criteria of the "vfx reference platform", which is a pity.
I still wish there would be an Nvidia option today, but i guess this will never be the case anymore...😥
I have a 2011 Pro 15 inch I still use for videos for my son. It's the 2.7GHz upgraded i7 model with 8GB of RAM and the anti-glare screen. Now that I know just the year after it looks exactly the same and can run Monterey I'm kinda sad mines not a 2012, but with an SSD, my 2011 MBP is still surprisingly capable and the screen is honestly so good.
You waited this moment your whole life.
I opted for this display when I bought my 2010 MacBook Pro, I did upgrade the ram and put an ssd inside eventually, believe it or not it was my daily driver until 2021 when I finally upgraded to the M1 Max 😅
Hi, Luke. Love your channel and video style. Soooo funny.
Question, I have a Macbook Pro early 2015 and totally freeze a lot. I don´t know why. Maybe can be a good topic for a video. If you know the answer, it will a great help.
I had a 2010 17” Unibody MBP with the matte display. It was an awesome computer and the only reason I gave it away is because a friend lost his job and needed a computer to apply for jobs. He’s employed now so it’s all worth it.
Luke… do you repair MacBook pro’s for your viewers if it’s interesting enough? I have 2 that need repair.
2011 MBP
2015 MBP
Both in great shape except obviously the internals.
Luke hallo! I have the same model and I love it!
Sponsor tip: (especially with Harry) appear after the add showcasing product effects.
I had a 2011 which had the non-antiglare (glare) 1680x1050 upgrade screen. Fantastic machine.
You can easily upgrade these to Ventura using the OpenCore patcher. Great machines and still have a few years left in them.
I had one those with the anti glare screen I pit liquid metal it was a nice laptop
My 2010 i7 MBP with an upgraed 2TB hard drive still runs very well doing basic tasks. I am amazed what my 13 year old laptop can do.
Luke I think you should do a video about the OpenCore Legacy Patcher that can allow these older models to be even more appealing
Love this design in much the same way I love the design of the M1 MacBook Air. For the M1 MacBook Air, or the M2 MacBook Air the only thing I would like Apple to look at is vapor chamber cooling.
Although the Retina displays can go up to 2880x1800 you need 3rd tools to enable it. macOS only allows up to FHD.
Funny you mention the 2010 model because I have a 2010 MBP 15" with the anitglare display. It definitely chugs along at its own pace. And I reckon the 17in anitglare display part is cheaper than the 15 because there are only the 2010 and 2011 models, and, much like mine (Early 2011 also w/ antiglare display) , most of the 2011s are dead or dying from that graphics card issue.
My 2008 MBP now runs Linux Mint 20.3 natively. Perfect.
great video
I have actually a MBP 2011 with antiglare hi-res display. And it's NOT interchangeable with the 2012 because the connector is not really the same size. There is no issue with the standard res display, but for the hi-res you will have an issue when trying to plus a 2011 display on a 2012 MBP !
The 2011 just needs a little trimming of the connector using a Dremel or similar tool. Many videos or articles out there, works like a charm.
I ran a task shrinking a screen recording (about 2k resolution) video into 480p so it would take less space on various Macs in QuickTime and it took:
2020 Mac Mini M1 8RAM - 3:55s
2020 Macbook Pro M1 Pro 16 inch 10cores 16gpu 32RAM - 3:36s
2019 Macbook Pro 16 inch i9 2.3ghz (Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB) 16RAM - 3:57s
2012 Macbook Pro 15-inch 2.7ghz 16RAM SSD - 3:32s
2012 model beat them all. Even M1 Pro. How is this even possible. But it is.
However... It can't do 4K. It is unrealistic. It takes 12hrs to convert 8GB 18min 4K video into HEVC 4K so it would weigh 4GB. Whereas M1 Pro and i9 do it in 23 mins. Which is also too long if you ask me.
I just bought my self that one but dual core and it runs so smoothly than any Other laptop you can get at the price I got it ....i wanna patch the the os from 10.10.5 to high Sierra and it will get the job done till I can afford anything modern.
I still have my 2011 MacBook Pro every since i bought it in 2011. However i did some upgrades to it by putting in 16 GB RAM. I took out the hard drive and put in a 2 TB SSD. The disk drive stopped working for some reason so I replaced it with a 1 TB SSD. I usually keep it in the house since i have an M1 MacBook Air and a M2 iPad Pro 11 inch for traveling.
You tested a 2011 display on a 2012? I’d love to see that test.
I own two 2012 mbp's with the 2011 anti-glare displays. However, Luke left out a fact that's important. One does need to file the male video plug on the 2011 screen a bit - not a lot, a fingernail file will do - in order to get it to fit into the 2012's female plug. Don't force it... just file it some, try plugging it in, maybe use a spudger to gently nudge w/o forcing.
Kids this days will never know the true magic of a 17" macbook with ports, and upgrades of the antiglare display and when you add 2 ssds to it!
I’ll pass on old retina displays as they are prone to delaminating
Could you make a video as to how to change a MBP's screen? and I will check ifixit too. Thanks for the tips, I have a mid-2012 13" MBP, bought 2nd handed with i7, the track pad is smooth like butter. I am running Monterey with Opencore, other than video acceleration issues, I like it.
He's already done it on this machine... Just search his videos.
would be great if you build a ultimate A1286 macbook pro with bluetooth wifi upgrade and a nvme upgrade
Luke, ever think about swapping the optical drive out for… a cellular data hotspot?
I've been so tempted to get the 17 inch 2011 version second hand but as you always say most seem to have GPU issues. Always wanted anti glare option.
if you can find one with a broken GPU for really cheap, it's very much worth it, you can just use it with HD graphics only
If you wanna use the 2011 screen on a 2012 macbook, you will need to sand the sides of the connector a little bit, or it will not fit
I had a 2010 i5 15" MBP with the AntiGlare screen. I absolutely loved it. I could work in full sunlight with zero visibility issues. Why, oh why, did Apple stop making that screen?
I'm watching on a late 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro. The anti-glare coating I removed as it had scratched and crazed.
Hi Luke, thanks for the inspirational videos! Along the same logic, how could I add a Retina display to a 2012 mbp (I want to keep the built in CD drive)?
This is my dream MacBook!
All these videos. You made me buy one. Show us how to update it!!! I can’t use anything anymore.
I have the same spec but 2.6ghz anti glaire display 16gb ram 1tb SSD 1GB GT650M and I love it
The funny thing is, I have a 2014 11’ MacBook Air that was lucky enough to get the 8gb upgrade from the factory. I got it for 80 bucks since the screen was bunked.
nice vid! but I think you did not make even 1 video about 13 inch 2015 MacBook Pro
Curious, with both sata 2x6gb port and the prices of SSD so cheap, would creating a FUSION drive benefit? Like putting a 256GB as main and a 4TB (4.26gb) in replace of the optical drive? vs a 2GB+2GB in both bays?
3:49 Correct me if I’m wrong, but the 2013 MacBook Pros were actually the first MBP models to feature the 802.11ac standard as the 2012 “Unibody” models never had that wireless standard.
I have the same model as in video it has 802.11a/b/g/n
Oh, I remember it well. But who could afford one with all the options back then..no body? Or at least very few who would actually use it to its full potential and enjoy every second. Usually, some rich guy who used it to send e-mails.
erm the Pre Retina Unibody came with the Broadcom BCM4322 or BCM4331 they do NOT support AC at all they support Wireless N at best, all the AC cards use the 12+6 edge connector and the Unibodies use the older 30pin Molex that only ever had up to Wireless N at best
I’m actually looking for one of the anti-glare displays for my 2009 15-inch MBP but I’m located in the UK so shipping costs are kinda absurd from the US (UK-based anti-glare displays are virtually non-existent tho, especially for a 2009 one)
Please help there's a scammer here
My 2010 MBP is still my daily driver (absolutely knackered to be honest) but it has a 1680x1050 glossy display, which I think is a rare upgrade. Is it?
I have an M1 and a 2016 13" but honestly I enjoy the 2012 15" antiglare. It's a great machine even today with Monterey, 16GB ram, and an SSD... however I double-checked and it doesn't have 802.11ac wifi, that came out in 2013. It's stuck with 802.11a/b/g/n which means no Unlock with Apple Watch. Doing that modification would be very cool and worth a video... as would an OCLP update to Monterey or Ventura. Thanks and stick with it Luke!
OCLP works for Ventura, I’m running Ventura on a mid 2012 that way
