      I was deployed during this time in the area they were at. I heard about this story, and our command had to hold a 'Safety Stand Down Class' on the fuck ups this unit did, and what not to do. Theater Command crucified the gunner, chief and convoy commanders. Full Court Martials all around with Dishonorable Discharges and some prison time. I'll see if I can find the article that was posted about it in the Army Times. EDIT/ADDITION: I'm still looking, but it's like digging through a stack of papers a mile deep and unorganized as well. My unit's Safety Stand Down was in Late July 2009, so look earlier than that for the initial incident (maybe Feb 2009? Court Martials take a bit of time. I saw the Article commenting on the Court Martials in Mid-August. I can't remember their names or ranks for the most part. But I remember the Assistant Convoy commander was a SFC that got an extra charge due to falsifying his report (Saying the vehicle was destroyed/inoperable, and the driver was KIA and they couldn't recover the body (Which turned out to be false)). Only the Crew Chief, Assistant Convoy Commander and Convoy Commander got prison time. And of course, discharges all around. I'll keep looking, but if you want to help, there is the pertinent info that I have from an aging memory.

      Considering his comment afterwards of being Marines, I can understand this much more. It's a side effect of how the branches work. The Army is permanently Garrison minded. It is in their nature to be, because only very little of the army's time is spent as a top dog in actual combat. Most of the time they are police. The Marine corps is designed to be combat-oriented. Consider his story of saluting. No Marine on the planet would do that because it's a sniper check. No army man alive will give up the chance to be saluted. In Vietnam and Korea we routinely lost officers because no army man would give up the chance to be saluted. If you are in a combat zone and you salute a marine officer he or someone in his direct line is going to take you aside and talk to you. Because for them it is an obvious safety concern. You're going to get somebody shot.

      @leechowning8728 Před rokem

      Actually, the reason they define the Bushmaster and the 155 as "small arms" is because otherwise it is only to be maintained by a calv trained armorer. Since they did not want to deploy the much less common calvary mechanics all over timbucktoo, they went down the line and defined it this way... "Calvary/Armored, calvary maintained. Infantry/scout/artillery, small arms maintains it"... has almost nothing to do with how it works, and almost totally to do with who normally uses it.

    Yeah this is the angriest I have ever been listening to/reading a story
    Just makes me mad ever since I first watched the video
    And it's also the reason I'm scared to go to the military bc this shit happens

      Keep in mind bud this is during Iraq, where everything was fucked and weird, stuff that happened then have been ironed out by now but shit still happens, just not as often as back then.

    "Roadside Bomb" is how I.E.Ds were referred to on the news in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It doesn't need turning into an acronym which you then have to explain that it's a bomb by or under the road.

      @kaleoarnold3709 Před 2 lety +1

    • @suntiger745
      @suntiger745 Před rokem

      I think it’s a military thing that has gotten mixed up in civilian use. A bomb is a specific thing in military terms. Aside from there being many different kind of bombs, they are a factory-constructed explosive device designed to be dropped from a plane.
      There are many different kinds of explosive devices, a mortar shell, a hand grenade, a claymore mine and an artillery shell are all explosive devices, but neither of them are bombs. And neither they nor bombs are improvised.
      It might seems anal-retentive to civilians, but there is a reason IED’s are called IED’s and not bombs.

    • @patrickholt2270
      @patrickholt2270 Před rokem

      @@suntiger745 Counterpoint: Mills Bombs. A bomb is any kind of non-artillery explosive whose purpose is to kill people, rather than to break rocks in a quarry or a mine or to removing buildings for redevelopment.

    • @suntiger745
      @suntiger745 Před rokem

      @@patrickholt2270 For the Mills Bomb, that is a WWI hand grenade given the name 'bomb', because the military is far from immune to messing up their own categorization systems. XD
      Especially in WWI were many systems were significantly upgraded to the point that they were re-categorized later on.
      Not a great priority in the middle of a war though, unless someone starts to mistake a truck with a Vickers machine gun mounted on the bed for a tank because they are both "combat vehicles". :P
      You suggestion for a different categorization of 'bomb' is not entirely without merit, certainly not for civilian purposes, because starting to talk in "milspeak" categories tend to get confusing unless you are in the military, work with them or are a military history/equipment nerd.
      A great example of this confusion is how often the AR15 is called an assault rifle. The AR15 is not an assault rifle, but it looks like the M16/M4 which are, without many people realizing the differences. For the sake of simplicity it should be called a rifle.

    Except for the POGs who are idiots.

    I admit, I was a POG, but I was a Chaplain's Assistant whose job was to support and defend the Chaplain (by international law, they are not allowed to carry a weapon).
    I would rip someone apart if they saluted MY Chaplain, MY Officer. They are under MY protection.

    I remember hearing this story when I was 19, and I can still only imagine what it was like, waking up alone in a tank with a massive chunk of the day missing and with what looks like craters from explosions behind me.
    "--Also my head is killing me, what is that ringing!? Where is everyone? Why is nobody answering their radio? Why am I even out here? Were we engaged? Did the other guys get killed? Where _is_ here? I'm not behind enemy lines, am I? What if I'm all that's left? What if they realize I'm still here? Oh God, I can't let them take me alive, who knows what they'll do to me! But how am I going to fight off who knows how many insurgents, especially the ones who killed my friends!? I can't drive, load, aim and fire a tank all by myself! *I'm just a kid!"*

    I have a left to die story for someone in my shop, It was at fort Irwin and it was someone in the welding shop I worked in. There was this detail where you can help train special forces guys by roleplaying as locals they they train up as rebel militia. Now Ft Irwin is like Ft Polk, its a large training center, it was in the Mojave desert. He gets this detail during the summer and they use civilian vehicles to move around the Mojave. At one point the sof guys tell my buddy and two of his friends to wait while they move ahead. They leave them in a old beat up civilian truck with just a jug of water in high desert during the summer. They don't hear from them for a couple hours and the heat was getting really bad. They decide fuck it, they call our First Segreant because the other guys weren't picking up their phone. Come to find out the SOF dudes fucking forgot about them and pretty much left them to die.

      Her grinning got to me. I get she doesn't have experience of the pressures or stresses faced by active duty (I don't either), but her empathy seems broken.
      I can internalize the crack of bullets, boom of an IED and feel an itch between my shoulder blades during these recollections - the stress of waiting for something to happen. She's grinning, chuckling and then when her cohost goes off in outrage at the story so far, she adopts an oh this is very bad tone and facial expression similsr to a (secretly proud) dad trying not to laugh at the shenanigans his child(ren) has been up to while his wife is pissed off recounting them.
      She seems to be acting the social chameleon, which I find creepy.

    ok I like Kit, he seems very genuinely interested in the stories and interested in telling his own stories, and his reactions/emotions are very honest. Kira on the other hand, irks me. She seems so disingenuous with her reactions and interest, for example, 13:46 'thaaat's craaaaazy'. it's one of those textbook surface-level reactions/responses, "im gonna give the bare minimum to attempt to let people know im not thinking about literally anything else", and it comes off as unappealing. I also like that Kit just sits there and watches until he gets to a part that grants him the opportunity to express a real reaction or to tell a story, not just throwing out random generic reaction 249 every 30 seconds.
