And hard work is hard work. But the outcome of hard work is often very different depending on where your starting line is. If a homeless person works very hard they will end up much better off than they would have otherwise and that is true but it is almost a guarantee that someone who is rich that works EQUALLY as hard will climb much much higher because of their access to different opportunities. Worked full time and went to school full time, graduated with a 3.46. Went to grad school for MBA, graduated with a 3.67. Now I’m pursuing a rewarding career. Yeah, maybe if I did better in high school I would’ve done better in college and landed somewhere just a bit more competitive. I could make a bunch of excuses as to why I didn’t but that’s behind me. Opal states that SAT scores are well correlated with GPA within the same school. This is a fair and logical point considering that (regardless of the school) your GPA is the consequence of your effort and access. Perhaps your GPA is not an indicator of how capable you are generally, but it is certainly an indicator to how well you’d perform comparably to other students within the same school.

Probably just because they took a whole bunch of AP courses + the shown GPA being weighted. Ultimately, GPA is in no way a viable means of ranking someone. Nobody has the same situation. A valedictorian is not better than another person. Rather, everyone is just a different person who face different challenges which are unfortunately reflected onto their GPA’s. Unfortunately, we probably have to wait like a century or two for the education system to get better through generations of insightful people.

College and SAT work for many people, but if you struggle with school, just know that job experience can get you far and succeed. I also dropped out of community college and decided to work from 19 to 24 I am now working a job that required a degree in social work because I had the "equivalent experience". Also, my older brother only went to community college for an EMT license that he never used and now makes way over 6 figures at a bank from experience. A college placement test i took to be a dual enrollment student was only 2 hours long and I received a perfect score. the amount of time spent on the SAT and ACT is exhausting. draining. and not to mention you’re expected to study for these tests while still keeping up with your regular class work. i didn’t study for either one. i’m in community college now with a 3.98 GPA and i’m excelling in my academics as a first generation immigrant and next year the first in my family to graduate from college with a bachelors degree. these tests do not measure intelligence or effort. they simply measure patience and focus. something many of us with attention deficits struggle with.

I have to disagree I think that the SAT and ACT are both important tests that should be mandatory, my reasoning behind why is that it is something universal meaning there shouldn't be any bias there, unlike with schools GPAs differ greatly depending on what school you go to and even what classes you take within the same school so, in my opinion, standardized tests are a great indicator of how well you are going to do, generally speaking (you are an exception to this obviously). I do agree that they should be made shorter or maybe even just split to where you take each section on a different day, but the problem is that with a person's GPA there are just way too many unknown variables at play, especially for international students where schools have different rules.

  • @micherlangefrancois-hemsle1770

My school didn’t have AP or IB classes and I enrolled there when I was a junior, so by the time all my transfer paperwork was finished, I only was able to take 2 college classes (which also raise your GPA), but they weren’t on my transcripts when I applied. I applied with a 4.0 and a 990 SAT (I was always behind in math so I basically failed that section) and got into Berkeley. I’m personally not a believer in standardized testing.
