- In this video, I have received a PS4 that has no hard drive and was told it boots up to an error screen that says it can't find the storage. Installing new storage and getting error SU-42118 when trying to install PS4 operating system.

NOTE: Before trying all the safe mode steps, if you've tried cleaning your ps4 before and had this issue after putting everything back together, go back in and MAKE SURE every connector dealing with the blu ray is well connected. Looked at tons of videos but none were working, even after factory reset(intializing) still no progress until i went back in and realized one of the wires to the blu ray wasnt completely connected. It wasnt the ribbon but the white connector with 4 wires that connects to the daughter board, started it up and now i can use discs again. Hopes this helps for the ps community. @letsfixit thanks for putting me in the right direction.

What four wires? The one that connect right under the ribbon bent one?
@@adonnistv7130 No, i try to clean it frequently, so sometimes im in a rush to put it back together and all the wires are crucial to be connected back the right way after cleaning. Noticed one of the wires wasn't securely connected that makes the bluray player not work or beep at all...
@@hectormendez8587 yes that wire... Its a group of four wires connecting to a singular socket, right next to the ribbon connection on the mother board... Hope this helps

Thanx man, just welded a piece of thin wire between the two ends and it's alive again. Was a pain in the arse, the damn fuse was thiner than the wire under microscope.
I was able to fix mine, I had taken it apart before and it wouldn’t update 7.51. I opened it, took out and reinserted the Blu-ray connectors. Hooked it up just now and it instantly updated(no error). For some people it might be the blu ray player not allowing the update. Was going to buy a new(used) ps4 but glad I got it fixed just in time for Ghost of Tsushima.
That's great you got it working! I think its a requirement that the bluray drive has to work to be able to update. Seems they should get rid of this requirement as I think most games will just be downloaded in the future.
@@letsfixit4404 I agree, there is almost nothing lost from functionality if the drive isn't working. Also making the drive such an essential component means that on the older models, where bluray controller board is married to the motherboard if MB goes bad, you can't even buy another one, unless you find one with it's accompanying bluray board(which is almost as rare a find as a unicorn). If one could install the OS without working bluray it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

Armaanla it has to be plugged in on both sides. This is how the Blu-ray drive communicates with the motherboard.
@@letsfixit4404 yeah i get that but i am saying like can we unplug that is with the other wires and replug it back in and dont touch the other side which is other the battery cux i really dont wanna take out the batteries

Another fix that i just did :
Gently press on the top and Pull the same cable in the video out and clean both sides and blow some air on it due to dust and gentle put both ends back and in and that should also fix it
I know this is from 3 years ago but I do have a question. Unlike yours mine does seem to have power and it peeps but it doesn't seem to recognise any discs. Is this also a problem with the ribbon cable? And if isn't what other things I could try?
I got a slim off ebay with the same error, also opened previously, even though the seller claimed he never opened it, but the clamp inside was actually mounted in upside down, which tells me the seller is full of bs (I am pretty sure it would have overheated fast if he had ever used it like this). It wasn't the issue with the 7.50 update, the PS4 requested some 6.xx update. I had another mainboard laying around from a PS4 I got just for the case (seemed to have a defective PSU, which turned out to be true), switched the mainboards and the PS4 now works. It wasn't the drive (which works fine). Now I either have a donor board or I probably check if that board also works in another PS4, if I get one with a defective HDMI port or something.
Interesting thanks for sharing. Some of the IC chips are on the mainboard that control the blue-ray player. I think there are some fuses you might check. I haven't worked with slims yet but I just got in a slim today for the first time not sure whats wrong with it yet. I will make a video with it soon.
wat about one for 2024 im trying the methods but nothing seems to work for my friend yet is there anything else that doesn't involve a USB doesn't seem to like to read it even tho it flat 32 and I upload the files right less ur spouse to have the reinstall and the update?

When your disk drive was unplugged did the disk drive it’s self work like at all my disk drive hasn’t been working for a while now and I couldn’t find what was wrong with it
So i tried removing the hard drive and installed it back it and nothing, formatted the ps4, tried to install the update with the usb and nothing, always says error updating and idk what else to do😪

One ps4 of mine totally makes no sound when I eject and it can’t update but my other one also can’t take discs but it does make noise when I eject it and this one can update my question is does your disk drive actually needs to be able to put the discs in or only needs to make noise and be connected and have power sorry for the bad English
sooooo finally i fix it.....!!!by opening the ps4 removing the hard drive ...click it again..download the update and all good..!!!

So near the disk drive, I see a bit of blue on the ribbon cable. So that means it's not pushed in all the way correct?
Hard to say maybe try to reseat the cable and see if it goes in more. Don’t push to hard though.

Ugly God it eventually stopped. I couldn’t do anything so I just unplugged my PlayStation and waited I believe

Have you tried doing a full software update? If that doesn’t work maybe try a new hard drive.

*In my case: the power ribbon cable was disconnected.* It must have gotten loose when I cleaned out my ps4 and reinstalled the power module. Check for a loose cable otherwise buy one on Amazon for $7 !

I got lucky with the 7.50 but 7.51 just isn’t happening for me. When I turn on or restart my PS4 it won’t accept disc or eject until after some time, i will hear a click on the Blu-ray drive that’s when it will accept and eject discs but it still won’t play games only dvd or cd. So as soon as I eject I try to update the firmware 7.51 and the same error pops up and no longer accept or eject until after some time/hour
It just updated to 7.51 right now thank god lol it’s a bit tricky all I did was click the update and while it’s about to turn off stick the disc in ASAP

I tried to open my game and it won't read the disc then i tried to eject it but it won't so i manually eject it and tried to insert it, but it won't suck the disc so starting that day i can't play games with discs only the installed games through the ps store then days later there's an 7.50 update and then when i started the update it says it's downloading but after the download it restarted and then it says SU-42118-6 then i cannot use my ps4 anymore could you please help me?

Worked for me try just disconnecting the big ribbon and reconnect and update with usb for me it worked perfectly
If your having this problem recently and it says you can’t install the update just plug your controller in and press the x button
The PlayStation should restart just like if it were installing an update
But I check after I click x and it’s not installed

planned obsolescence .. it makes ZERO sense that a machine that sat unused .. as mine has for more than 6 months.. and ALSO had a disc in it from the LAST TIME I USED IT .. with a DISC .. which worked fine :) .. Suddenly no longer works 6 months later when i want to update the System OS .. this is very fishy SONY stuff to be honest :) and now because NO BLUE RAY drive = NO UPDATE OS = ONLINE SIGN IN (cos of course these things are TOTALLY logically linked.. arent they SONY?).. The unit is basically bricked..

I have a normal ps4, I have taken it to a shop to get the whole thing cleaned because it was overheating. I have that error code but even with a short thick cable, my controller does not connect to it.
Ryan Pescott that’s not good could be a corrupt bios and the Bluetooth chip is not working. Have you tried a different controller? I would take it back to the repair place and talk to them about it as they should fix it.

Okay no one has had the exact same problem as me… I tried to do a system software update and now I’m stuck on the screen that says error and the code and my controllers will not connect to my ps4 at all no matter what I do… if my ps4 is off my controller will turn it on but the moment it turns on my controller isn’t on and refuses to connect anymore 🤷🏽 I’m stuck in a infinite loop and safe mode does the same

@@badger3286 shii bro u dont wanna do it but, my dumb ass ubplugged it about over 40 times prolly more(the wrong way that fucks the ps4 up) like unplug the whole cord then i rebuilt the database a total of 8 times then intialized it lost everything (dont fucking intialized it if you dont know ur info for ur accounts) then rebuilt the database and restarted the ps4 then it worked. Took like 7 days.
I keep getting error code SU-42118-6 when i try to install update 7.50 and when i insert a disc it keeps rotating and then makes some breaking sound and gives me unrecognized disc error. I popped open my PS4 and checked the hard drive cables were all connected and the rollers were fine so do you think it’s a laser problem?

Try cleaning the laser with some IPA Isopropyl Alcohol 99%. I think this something that is pretty easy to try at first.

Take the covers off your drive and manually roll a disk in you see if you see an issue there. Also there is a spring in the drive make sure it is there and working correctly. That’s where I would start. imgur.com/gallery/hFBvIJK I uploaded an image of it. It is at the top middle of the drive

If you just take the hard drive out and put the same one in, no you will not. If you do an upgrade you will also not lose your saves. If you do a full reinstall, yes you will lose you saves without doing a backup first.

If you guys are having trouble. Just give your ps4 a couple of smacks. It actually helped me im being seriously honest not a troll. I saw some kid do it and i was like alright lets try it before i take it apart and it actually worked. Just make sure your ps4 is completely turned off and smack it like 5 times. If a disk gets inserted then just update in and it should work. Atleast for me.

This is not normal wtf so if you buy an ps4 you need to take it apart yourself to fix it wtf instead of making an good product that works got this problem now every time i download update 8.50 this allright then it restarts and gives me this error wtf
I just got my ps4 slim fixed and he said that in the motherboard there was an SMD defective and u have to replace it via micro soldering. this fault leads to a broken disk drive thus leading to that specific error. So there's the problem.
It's most probably the fuses on the motherboard that needs to be replaced . Usually, it's the one called F6202
