    I will restore this Arcade Joystick for my PlayStation that I restored and upgraded recently. The controller is quite yellow ans the joystick sometimes gets stuck. The controller was made by Asciiware in the 90's. And it has extra switches to simulate automatically pressing buttons.
    After disassembling the controller I cleaned the circuit board with isopropyl alcohol and oiled the joystick. To temove teh yellowing I used a retrobrighting method explained more in this video: • How to remove yellowin... Since creating that tutorial I made also this box to have better contol of the temperature and to allow me easily use any size container. More about the box on this video: • Making the Ultimate Re...
    Once I had removed the yellowingthere was still some marks left on the shell. I was able to remove those with a magic sponge. I also didn't want to use the hydrogen peroxide on the cord which had some yellowing too. I was able to remove that too with the sponge. The Playstation logo on the contoller was damaged so I repainted it on the shell.
    Thanks for watching, I hopy you enjoyed the video!

      It's all about perceived value. I'm a toy designer and you'd be surprised how little is inside some of the most expensive electronic toys. Back in the 90's when freight and plastic were cheap, manufacturers loved making oversized cases in oversized boxes. Just look at the original gumdrop iMacs, they have a little motherboard inside and the rest of the product was a huge empty piece of translucent plastic.
      Nowadays, oil prices, and therefore plastic and shipping prices have gone up so companies are minimizing size and components. Touch screens are replacing buttons etc. Even LEGO has shaved-off a millimeter from the inside wall thickness of its bricks to reduce the plastic they have to buy.

    You know, I was wondering if maybe this stick could be upgraded with an 8-way gate, but that maybe it wouldn't matter if the PS1 couldn't read the extra inputs (though now that I'm thinking of it, it probably could unless it was maybe a REALLY early launch model, from long before the analog controller was made). I'm sure it matters whether the stick is programmed to emulate the D-pad or the analog stick, when it comes to the number of options. Then again, seeing the simpler design for the actual stick switches, I don't think that's even an option unless you're REALLY familiar with arcade hardware and making/installing adapters for new to old hardware. I get the feeling our boy here could probably figure it out if he wanted.

    • @DK-Design
      @DK-Design Před rokem +2

      It looks possible. It's been awhile since I at the arcade as a tech but that stick format looks about the same. This is an analog 4-way with a common. You'd just have to wire it up where the corner switches are connected to the adjoining directions.

    • @youwishbro7543
      @youwishbro7543 Před rokem

      you can def reuse the housing and just replace all the internals to use on playstation,xbox/pc. A universal board is like $90, plus the 20 point connector for the buttons, new sanwa stick, and then some buttons and some finesse then voila, you have an old school controller that can be used on modern games.

    • @Schnittertm1
      @Schnittertm1 Před rokem

      Since it is PS1 it will almost certainly emulate the D-pad and for most fight sticks the D-pad is also the default, though newer fight sticks (like my 3) sometimes have a switch where you can select the stick to either function as D-pad or as one of the analog sticks. As for an 8-way gate, you'd just have to find the right measurements and then design one and 3d print it, at least for the one he restored here. Had the stick in it been, for example, a Sanwa JLF stick, you'd be able to buy an 8-way gate or even just go in and turn a part on it 45° to get such a gate.

    • @bghoody5665
      @bghoody5665 Před rokem

      Considering the joystick is using buttons, which are on or off which is the same as digital, I'd say it's just replacing the dpad.

    What a rad stick design! I've never seen that before!
    I'd love to see a company make a modernized version with better parts and placements.

    I have seen some odd looking controllers in my time. Most of which were custom made. But this is by far the most impressive I have ever seen.

    The things basically hollow! Awesome thing to fix. Never thought to use the magic eraser on blemishes like that. Genius! Also, I want an original PlayStation now!

    I got one of these, really nice controller, especially stuck on an Xinput adapter for some Street Fighter V. Had a broken trace on one of the buttons when I got it but it wasn't hard to fix.
