In this video I will restore this Nintendo 64 controller for my restored N64. The controller is badly yellowed and very dirty from years of use. The joystick is badly damaged which makes it impossible to play with it.
Unlike the console itself, the controller is very easy to open and it can be done with regular screw driver. However I find it one of the most annoying ones to put back together. The 2 screws inside the connection port under the console can sometimes be hard to put back in. To open the joystick assembly you need to open the screw and press the case back closed like there was still a screw and the you pry open the two plastic clip holding it together. NOTE: I recommend buying this or similar product to replace the whole assembly: amzn.to/34zII5a However, I decided to try to repair the loose stick. I figured out what was worn down and added some epoxy putty and sanded everything down as many times as needed to make it fit. Most likely it's not going to be ready after applying the epoxy once but you might need several tries. On the positive side, if you like this type of hobby it's going to be much cheaper to try to fix it with putty before deciding to replace the whole joystick. Before applying the putty you need to clean the surfaces and you might also want to scratch them up with sand paper to get better grip for the epoxy.
The shell was first washed with soapy water and used hydrogen peroxide and UV-light like in this tutorial • How to remove yellowin... Finally I used isopropyl alcohol to clean the board and electronics and put everything back together.

Fixing the inside of the joystick assembly was some next level shit that I’ve never seen from a restoration channel. Most channels I’ve seen either buy a replacement aftermarket joystick part or just take one from another controller. Absolute beast. This is why you’re my favorite restoration channel.
Back in 2012 most videos for repairs just told you to grease up the inside and cleaning up the dust, or adding tape lol
I've done both, and from my experience the one that was just fixed tends to go back to shit after some years of playing, so you'll have to do it over and over again. Now, the GC replacement will last you a lifetime
Next level shit indeed :)
Totally!
@@matheusavila2688 I agree! It probably would’ve been better in the long run to get an aftermarket one, but it’s cool to see a fix was attempted. I dont think I’ve ever seen that before. I’d be curious to see if someone would try to fix worn out parts by 3D printing new ones.

This guy puts more care into fixing these things than the workers did making it in the factory.
Because it wasn’t broken the first time it was in the factory, the person using it broke it.
It’s not like it was premade in 1972
@@SmilingSkyCZcams I never said the factory workers broke it, I'm saying he takes more care of the device than a factory worker would.
@spook lad i think that you are a very childish person for saying that the guy who opens up a controller and puts it in a rubber ducky bath puts more care into the device than a factory worker who made the device in the first place. i hope you get your ego fixed
@@BriansMe Ah, going right for the insult rather than making a solid point, classic. If you even looked at the video you would notice how carefully he cleans and fixes these devices. It's clear he cares about this hobby a lot, and he knows what he's doing. Sure, he has a rubber ducky, but that doesn't mean he's childish, it means he has a sense of humor. I'd never seen a circuit board be straight up scrubbed with a toothbrush no less. Amazing.

Nintendo's point in saying that is taking apart a controller (or console or game for that part) before the warranty expires voids the warranty. You can only get official repair support from Nintendo as long as you don't break the seals on those electronics.
They are also dissuading people who do not know what they are doing from opening up the controller and possibly making it worse.

Ahh, joysticks. The thing Nintendo still can’t get right.
Rip joycons😂
They got the joystick right on the GC. If I'm remembering correctly, part of the reason N64 joysticks were wearing out was due to the axis being made of plastic, which was shaved down over an extended period of time / usage.
I think Nintendo corrected that issue by swapping the axis material to metal, thus reducing the wear on the axis.
