Restoration & Upgrade of PlayStation with a Spider Nest Inside

  • I will restore and upgrade this broken and yellowed PlayStation. The coinsole doesn't read discs which is very common and easily fixable issue with these old consoles. I also found something a spider nest from the inside.
During the dissasembly I found the remains a of a spider and a spidernest. It's very common I find bugs inside these old devices, I'm, not sure why, maybe they're dark and warm places?
I cleaned the parts with soap and then put them in my retrobrighting box. Here's my tutorial to the retrobrighting: • How to remove yellowin... and tutorial to build the box: • Making the Ultimate Re... Notice that the original tutorial doesn't need the heater but the lights are touching the box which warms up the solution. Both heat and UV-light seem to aid the process.
Next I installed the upgrade. I got a device called PSIO that allows me to play games from SD cards. This device can onlu be installed to Playstations taht have the Parallel I/O port in the back, not all of them do. You can find the instructions for each board from ps-io.com/ and full details on how to set it up. All you need is to add files (the manufacturer provides on that page) to the SD card and put your games on the card. Note that some games may consist of multiple .bin files. Those need to be cobined into single .bin files e.g. with CDMage program. This is a failrly simple modifications and fits someone with a little experience, however, you need a soldering iron with quite small tip to be able to solder them.
To fix the disc drive I opnly had to clean the lens. In some cases teh laser has gone old. You can try adjusting the screw I show to give it more life. It increases the voltage going to the laser and if it's adjusted to the highest voltage at the factory the laser would burn out faster. In this restoration I use similar potentiometer to fix the laser on another Playstation • I restored this $7 Jun... The idea is the same with this one. If adjusting the laser doesn't work, you need to purchase a replacement part. Or you can just intall an SD card reader and never play games from discs, but I wanted that option too so I repaired it.
Thanks for watching, I hopy you enjoyed the video!

Concerning the laser lense, most people foreget that the lens has two sides. Also there are mirrors and the glass on the laser diode which can get dirty, especially if the device was used by heavy smokers.
If cleaning the upper lens side doesn't worke, I usually demount the Laser essembly from the horizontal worm gear and throw it into my ultrasonic cleaner for some minutes (just water and a little bit of soap and a little bit of IPA). After the washing I dry it as good as possible and let it dry completely out over night.
I usually try this before messing around with the potentiometers as a wrong setting may burn the laser diode.

The buttons, levers, covers, all seem ridiculously engineered and complex for a video game console that's almost 30 years old. Back when this system was new, I found that the first generation had the cpu was right under the cd drive and would overheat the cd drive. Over time this would soften the plastic holding the optics causing them to move out of alignment. To fix this I would install a fan inside the unit. This worked so well that the first gen PlayStation is still working today. I think I need to get this card adapter for it

So, I'm guessing that the chip allows the data from to be loaded into the console much like it would from a disc, while at the same time telling the console that the game is an 'official copy' which the correct region data.
The way that copy protection worked on the console used a very little known fact about CD lasers, mainly that they can read right into the centre ring of the disc. Sony were the only company to take advantage of this and when the game discs were produced, a spiral track of data was placed on this ring that no one else had the ability to reproduce. to make it even more secure, they took advantage of the laser's lens being 'floated' around in an electromagnetic field, as this was necessary for all CD lasers because the data track wasn't always perfectly cantered, so micro adjustments were needed to read the data. what this means for the copy protection in that the data track in the centre ring wobbles, which made it near impossible to reproduce. this is the sound you can hear the laser making as it scan for region data where seems to zip back and forth rapidly. When you 'chipped' a PlayStation console, the chip would send data to the BIOS telling the console the game was official and the right region too
