  • "Just as stars scatter into they night sky,
just as overturned jars violently pour out its content --
so will blood flow from their throats!
When the deed has been done,
then we will dance around their dead bodies!"
    ~Elektra
The opera opens with the three-note motif of Agamemnon, Elektra's slain father. This motif or musical theme appears constantly throughout the opera, suggesting the ominous presence of Agamemnon all throughout. It is the hour of the night when Agamemnon was murdered by Klytemnestra and her lover Aegisth. Elektra appears and repeatedly recalls to her memory the image of her murdered father. For her, only one thought in life exits: vengeance and atonement.
