  • "Mother is having bad dreams again.
They said that she screams in her sleep
as if being strangled to death.
Sister, stay out of her way today.
    When she is being paranoid,
that is when you should fear her the most."
    ~Chrysothemis to Elektra
    "I've been having sleepless nights.
Do you know any remedy for bad dreams?
I must find out whose blood must flow
so that I can sleep peacefully again!"
    ~Klytemnestra to Elektra
    "What blood must flow?
    Blood from your own neck,
    when the hunter catches you!
He will chase you relentlessly around the house.
Then I, who sent the hunter to catch you,
I stand there and watch you die.
You will have no more nightmares,
and everyone in the house will rejoice!"
    ~Elektra replies to Klytemnestra
A great noise in the house and pathways heralds the approach of Klytemnestra, who is having sacrifices dragged to the altar to free her soul, racked by tormented dreams. Klytemnestra opens up about her nightmares to Elektra, hoping to find a remedy for her bad dreams. In a fit of rage, Elektra declares that the only way her dreams will finally end is when Klytemnestra herself falls dead by the axe. Afterward, an appalled Klytemnestra receives false news about the death or Orest, she bursts into a hysterical laughter as she goes back into the house. Elektra does not know what the news was, but she is baffled why her mother is very pleased.

Cette version d'Elektra est monstrueusement sublime. La meilleure?

Je ne sais pas si cette version est la meilleure mais sans doute la plus dramatique et sauvage.

I´ve just seen it in Frankfurt... Horrible "Inzenierung", even worse Klytemnestra! Nowadays they seem to prefer decadent sopranos to play this role... so they have no low notes at all and no ringing middle notes either. So what's it that they do? They run away and we miss the best of the opera.

It's hard to explain to those who are new to opera that singing has declined.
