At the time, Mayall referred to this group as ‘Blues Without Bashing’. 😎
REALLY happy this ‘under the radar’ sleeper is finally being rediscovered. I can assure you that after a 50+ year test ride, it does NOT get old (unlike the listener 😂). Keep in mind that this was done Live On Stage at the Fillmore East in the summer of ’69, with an entire album capturing the event. This ‘Turning Point’ band also released a 2nd album (studio), called ‘Empty Rooms’ before Mayall moved on to his equally famous ‘USA Union’ band (1970), with Don ‘Sugarcane’ Harris on fiery fiddle (you should know that name -- If not, check out FZ's ‘Gumbo Variations’ or ‘Little House I Used to Live In’) and then reinvented himself again in ’71~’72 with his remarkable ‘Jazz Blues Fusion’ combo, featuring the absolutely phenomenal Freddie Robinson on finger-pickin’ guitar (the rest of the band weren't no slouches neither 😉). Anyway, many thanks for a reminder of how fine this track is, and for the chance to witness someone hearing it for the first time. 😆

Ditto. Heard John and his changing band several times. He was/is a big time influencer of many artists to follow. Jon Mark ( acoustic guitar here) and Johnny Almond (playing sax here) were two of my favorites that were incubated under his leadership. My 80 year old memory may be mistaken guys do if I have the musicians here wring let me know. But you would be wise to also check out Mark-Almond Band recordings for some stellar work. Oh, thank you for resurrecting this gem. Mayall was a foundational figure in the Blues Revival in the UK. He was a disciple of blues which he passed on to Eric Clapton. He wasn't a "rock star" (although he looked like one), he was a musician. "That instrument" was a harmonica, his second voice. I saw him once many years ago. An absolute MONSTER on piano

Yay, this is a blues classic. LOVE John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. Check out his 70th birthday concert album.

This was a totally revolutionary band at the time with Mayall dispensing with the "normal" template of blues/rock band, including his own Bluesbreakers, by having no drummer, (acoustic guitar and bass providing the rhythm), and no lead guitar as such, (like the stellar names featuring in previous incarnations of the band). A special shout out to 17 year old Steven Thompson with an assured performance on bass, providing a solid bedrock to this band. Like many British bands and artists of that time, Bluesbreakers blurred the distinction between Jazz and Rock as displayed by Mayall in the albums "Bare Wires" and "Blues from Laurel Canyon". Another British artist that you'd be astonished by, in the how have I not heard this before vein, is the late great John Martyn and I've provided a link to a live performance of "John Wayne" featuring David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, in a concert in London. Give it a go. czcams.com/video/hp6y8ed7yVk/video.html

Had the LP, good stuff! Known for harmonica, John Mayhall and the blues breakers, loved it.

A friend of mine who was a in California during the late sixties had the album. He told me to take it home and put drums on it. The easiest thing I ever did. There Timing was incredible! I didn't do it to make it better. I did it for him! R.I.P. John David Martin!

I would like to recommend “Room To Move” also from “The Turning Point” album. The album was recorded live with no drummer. Fantastic! 🖖🏼

John is the oldest active musician on the planet. His career has spanned over 70 years. He's a British instrumentalist with John Mayall and the BluesBreakers. He's much more popular in the UK than the United States. I don't know why his music never caught on here in the U.S. He's a multi instrumentalist who is amazing. I never heard a song by him on any You Tube channel before. Great for you to hear this jam and discover John. 0:24

I had the great pleasure of meeting John after his show. I don't have words to explain how it makes you feel talking to such a legend! Wow, I wish you could have seen him before retirement.

Off the same album "Thoughts about Roxanne" and " room to move " . 2 of the men off this album Mark and Almond formed a band
that carried on this subdued California coolness , best song "the city"

John Mayall - vocals, harmonica, occasional guitar, tambourine.
Johnny Almond - tenor and alto saxes, flute.
Jon Mark - acoustic finger-style guitar.
    Larry Taylor - electric bass.
This tune was something of an underground FM hit in 1969. And you're right, it IS a great track and not all that celebrated; it almost perfectly fuses blues, folk, and jazz. You're also right in that it's something for serious music guys like yourself; its greatness lies in the band's playing as soloists and as an ensemble and not in immediately gratifying hooks.
By the way, "Room to Move" off the same album was a bigger hit, and more entertaining if not as musically rich.
