Fifty-two years ago I was a 22 y/o Marine grunt on Hill 10 in Quang Nam Province Vietnam standing watch on a cold, wet, monsoon night when I heard the sounds of an angel singing, on AFVN (Armed Forces Vietnam) radio, coming from one of the fighting holes. The beautiful voice of that singer embraced my soul, stole my heart, and assured me that even though we were living in hell, beauty, grace and heaven were still possible. The voice of Linda Ronstadt carried me through three years in Navy hospitals of surgery and rehabilitation. I regained my strength, humanity and replenished my soul but I never reclaimed my heart. Linda Ronstadt stills has it. God bless you Linda and mahalo for all the aloha you have shared with us over the years.
Wow... Your comment got my attention and hit me kinda hard... My little brother was a Marine, too... He was KIA in Quang Nam Province...July 10, 1969... He and two other Marines died that night... Their SGT was seriously injured...and died while being transported for treatment... ❤️🇺🇸💝

Okay, now you've put a huge lump in my throat. God bless you for your woefully unappreciated service as were our Vietnam veterans. Amazing isn't it, where we find our strengths in our hours of need? I worked for a lady while I went through beauty school. Her husband had been a Green Beret and MIA for nine years and as long as I have a memory, I will never forget when our POWs were released in'73. For three solid days, we were glued to the t.v. as they each stepped off the planes, some if them kissing the ground. He was finally declared dead.

There are so many ppl and singers that it's highly unlikely that no one today is at her level. She's really, really good though. But no need to make silly statements. Kind of diminishes the compliment if it's like that.
Shes amazing , Dolly Parton said something along the lines of, Most singers sing what they can, Linda just sings what she wants.

I definitely had a crush on her in the 70s! Beautiful in every respect.
That so called " yodel" is a signature of many rancheras and mariachi tunes. Something that was deep in Ronstadt's musical soul. Her belting is also unique - unlike Broadway or Blues/Rock beltees. Very special songbird. Comparisons to other female singers, just 'cause they were contemporaries or just ' cause they are female always struck me as a slur. Linda was in her own vocal universe - natural combination of power and warmth. . Thank you Sir for this appreciation of those remarkable pipes.

Natural power, tenderness surrounded by players devoted to her voice as a Stradivarius quality instrument. Rock, pop, country, mariachi, orchestral, Operetta, New Wave...she could sing it all and so she did. On the road, on the right night No one could touch her. So we're still listening.

She was true to her roots---she grew up speaking English and singing in Spanish. And there was no "spiral." She has Parkinson's Disease and sold millions of records until she got sick.

I would take one Linda Ronstsdt over 100 Carrie Underwoods. Ronstadt didn’t just have a big voice; she had phrasing, color, subtlety, and real emotion.

@@bradhuskers I agree. It’s only because I saw Underwood perform Ronstadt, I think at the Rock HOF. She was with Emmy Lou Harris and Bonnie Raitt, two singers I greatly admire. None of them did justice to Linda Ronstadt. Emmy Lou and Bonnie had color, phrasing and emotion, but not the bigness of Ronstadt’s voice. Underwood has a big voice but no subtlety, color,or emotional intangibles. She leaves me cold all the time.
I don’t like Mariah Carey at all, and I feel Whitney Houston had enormous talent that was wasted on abuse and overuse of vocal frills. I MUCH prefer Ronstadt’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ to Houston’s. But people seem to love over-singing.

Linda's voice has ALWAYS made me weep. I'm a guy. I can't listen to her with other people aroud! There's such a pure beauty when she sings certain notes.
I think Linda is the best female singer of all time with Ann Wilson a close second. Linda’s vocal quality is just sublime. Beautiful and strong voice.
I put Barbara Streisand as best singer vocally, But Linda and Ann are more my taste in music. Linda can go very high

She has a peerless, seemingly effortless technique that is ensconced in an unaffected soul-drenched delivery. Linda Ronstadt had a unpretentious, crystalline voice that never compromised or hid behind trite trends. If she decided to sing Mexican- which she did- she went all the way. There was not a genre Linda could not tackle.
Being a professional musician for over 50 years one of my favorite things to do was lay on the floor with headphones on and listen to Linda sing. Pitch, color, control, emotion, range

There is a video of her in later years, when she was in ill health, when she talks about her singing and she is never comfortable with her singing, she said she could hear so many wrong notes in this performance- I just think it is perfect ❤️
Roy Orbison's genius and Linda Ronstadt's powerful voice came together perfectly. Linda is a beloved performer since she started. And her personality helped her get up there.
I’ve commented previously on Linda Ronstadt…she was, is, and always will be the pride of Tucson, Arizona. We love our hometown girl…as for me, I wanted to be her as a young teenager, and later still, it was always a joy to hear her sing during her trips home…thank you Fil ❤

If it was up to Linda, there would be no problem with your analysis, since her Parkinsons has robbed her of her vocal chords. A damn shame since she was able to switch into every musical style...and excel at it. Mariachi music, since her father was her inspiration, musical theatre, rock, country, pop...If she had put out an album of her singing the phone book, I would have bought it.
@Lawrence Taylor - Ronstadt was re-diagnosed in 2019 with progressive supranuclear palsy, another un-fun degenerative disease frequently mistaken for Parkinson's.
She could ... and did, sing everything and made it her own.
To describe Linda Ronstadt you only one word. "PERFECT" no one can improve on pefection.

Me too, I love Linda's versatility of genres with rockabilly, Motown remakes, Nelson Riddle, rocker, Mariachi and soft pop with Neville but was truly in awe after Pirates of Penzance performance.

@@yotony0She has mostly European lineage...her father German/Mexican, her mother German/English/Dutch. I could never understand why, she dismisses her European ancestry. Perhaps, it just has to do with her upbringing. Don't get me wrong, I love Linda...I'm a huge fan, my favorite all time female singer. I have both of her "Canciones De Mi Padre" albums and most of her popular albums, plus her Trio albums with Dolly Parton and Emmilou Harris as well as her Duets with Aaron Neville and others.
She's so unique. She has a big heart. And she's the whole package. Bless her forever!
One thing that you have to remember about Linda is that she continued to get better through the years. She worked and perfected her craft as the years went by. She started out with a natural God-given talent and worked hard to make it even better. Love, Love, Love her voice.
She owned any song she sang, she respected songs in her delivery.
What's most amazing to me is that, in all likelihood, she's not thinking about what she's doing at all. She has incredible technique and she's "become one" with the song and it just flows from her in a very natural way. Lots of people have great technical chops, but they just can't get out of their own way and allow the music to express itself.
I know what you mean in that she is one with the song and it feels natural but I also think she has very carefully rehearsed and mapped the song out vocally and thus knows what she is doing so that she can relax into the performance and enjoy it. The prep work is definitely there and she is actually really concentrating and listening as she is singing. Sounding natural is what happens when you have carefully prepared and are a total pro like Linda! She ROCKS! (Coming from an ex singer!) but yes it is flowing from her and she is definitely enjoying it. She really is the best.
There's so much less "singing" going on when she sings, which is why the singing is so good. I think Kelly Clarkson is a great singer but the only song that was an absolute fail for her is this one. You can't cover Ronstadt. Everything you do sounds like you're trying too hard.

Saw her live….with America and the Eagles…..in her early days. I remember her clearly….with great affection….
I saw her with Poco , America. They all came out together encore sang don't cross the river... saw her again early 73 Tanglewood mass opened for Seals and Crofts. Blew the place away

Despite her physical struggles, she seems grateful for the opportunities she had to sing what she wanted to sing for as long as she did with the caliber of singers and musicians with whom she collaborated. Think Peter Asher was the perfect manager for her.

Then country Rock then came Peter Asher of Peter & Gordon fame brother of Jane Asher Paul McCartney dated for a while he steered her into pop rock with a string of remakes / cover versions .after a slew of them she tried singing standards. Did 3 albums with Nelson Riddle..did a country album with Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton..did few duets with Arron Neville..also did pirates of penzants musical and released a few Mexican recordings in Spanish too
@@bobf.5538 Such an extraordinary career. I was not a musical savvy teen in the 70's. Only after seeing the documentary based on her musical memoir in 2019, have I done a "deep dive" into Ms. Ronstadt's career. It's been quite the education; she has led me to so many other amazing singers, songwriters and musicians.

@@lisag18 Apologies - back in those days it was unfortunately much more difficult for gay people to be open about it, so I knew very few - so it never crossed my mind that teenage girls might think the same of Linda as we boys did.

Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers & can sing any genre from ballads to country to rock. She has had so many hits such as "Blue Bayou", "You're No Good", "Long Long Time", "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", "Desperado" etc. Ronstadt also did two great duets, "Somewhere Out There" (with James Ingram) & "Don't Know Much" (with Aaron Neville). The Eagles were her backing band till they went out on their own & she has covered a lot of their songs.

My all-time favorite singer! I LOVE the way her Glissando is mirrored by the steel guitar. They worked beautifully together! and her Soprano notes are hit perfectly, with her throat and hard palate arched and wide open but with total control. Linda ALWAYS stayed on her breath, and it breaks my heart in a million pieces that she can't sing anymore. We were all blessed with her voice. Praying for Linda, with thanks and much love and respect. Just wonderful...

When she started belting out, my hair stood straight up and I got goose bumps.
My Idol was Olivia Newton John. I sang just like her for years until my voice coach said I needed to be Me. SO I started singing Like LInda Ronstadt. I LOVE both these ladies. Nothing like them. Ronstadt is a cut above all of them because she makes you feel something with an out of this world phenominal voice.
Back then Linda Ronstadt probably had no idea that we would be analyzing her voice note by note decades later, but that's OK because her delivery is incredible! Thank you, Fil, for sharing your great insight into one of my favorite singers. I feel transported by her voice to a beautiful, dreamy place. 💜💜💜

Linda seems to have a habit of singing other people's songs and making them hers... Just a mesmerizing voice.
She first wrote her own songs and couldn’t get a record company to take them. Then she started doing covers and it was magic!
When I worked on Larchmont in the late 70s, I would see Linda almost every week at Lucy’s Mexican restaurant, one of her favorite lunch places in LA, just around the corner on Melrose. She was always so sweet, and so shocked when people would tell her how much she was loved. No pretense, no snobbery, just a humble person. BTW, she was often with Jerry Brown, who was mayor and then governor. And the food was great! This is such a brilliant analysis!

Somehow in the summer of 76 I was in San Francisco and ended up in the front row to see Linda and the Eagles…..I was mesmerised gazing up at her…..my lord she could sing….and all the other musicians she helped along the way….. Also the quiet understated vocal at the beginning expresses her emotional state so perfectly-really sad with a tiny bit of hope. And then it turns powerful as she tells us what how her life will change when she goes back. Her singing is so sensitive to the emotionality and storytelling of the lyric.

Her delivery is so exceptional and effective because she is not just telling you a story. Have you ever had someone keep you from somewhere and someone for a long, long period of time and it's so bad that you know you will never be okay again?? When you're awake at 2:30am almost every night, and there isn't even anyone to whisper your story to? You're in a small room alone and quietly saying what you would explain to someone if there were a soul insight. So, it's just YOU and YOUR TRUTH.
And then as if you were determinately proclaiming and informing whoever is keeping you away, and everyone else who doubts you, that you will be IN FACT going back, no matter how they doubt or what they believe. just FYI! And you will finally be happy once again before you were ripped away from your life, and peace and contentment and love and future memories will belong to you again. PROMISE.
(Obviously I feel empathy because it's like she told my story from a very long year in my past. I was a teenager and had no choices. I love Linda Ronstadt forever.)

This is one of the most beloved songs in the US, across all genres and ages. Her range is not even possible! She really is the first woman, on her own headline, to fill stadiums and arenas. It will take you ages to discover her immense and varied catalog! Unfortunately, she has been sidelined by Parkinson's for the last 20 years, and there will be no more tours. She had quite a run!

Some of the Eagles were her back up band and she told they should get together and be their own band. She kind of created the Eagles.

Another great analysis Fil. So glad I ignored the negative review I read about her way back in the late 60's. 'Long Long Time' is one of my fav goosebump generators and her cover of the Stones 'Tumbling Dice' is simply awesome and my favorite version of that song.

Long, Long Time is one of my favorites. You listen to the words and you listen to the voice. And you feel complete heartbreak.
Linda had a great voice for many years, and she could belt it out when required too as with this song.
She phenomenal! Awesome song and music. I lived through the greatest music history, IMO.
Tears well up in my eyes when she belts out that first " I'm going back someday". She's the best. Or am I just a softie?
I saw Linda perform this twice in the 70's with this band, most incredible, amazing voice. One of the greatest voices in any style she chose to sing.

Was listening to Linda the whole way home tonight on a night ride in Portugal. I actually heard a song she recorded that I never heard before- a duet with Aaron Neville. I smiled because I’ve listened to her for almost 50 years and I thought I knew every song she recorded, but I got to hear her beautiful duet for the very first time! ❤ to Linda!
Blue Bayou is a wonderful song that anyone can sing, well at least in the shower.
Linda shows that there's a difference between a cover of a song and a version of a song. Ronstadt was moving from country to pop and you can hear both influences in this version that make it stand on its own when compared to the Orbison original.

She could rock Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly tunes, cover Smokey Robinson and Little Anthony R&B ballads, repopularize big band, pull off fronting one of the top Mariachi bands, angelically harmonize with Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton, early 80s New Wave, beautiful duets with Aaron Neville, James Ingram and yes Kermit the Frog 🐸, and friggin opera.
She also was instrumental with other artists - like the Eagles and covering songs by Warren Zevon and Karla Bonoff she really helped them gain popularity (listen to Warren Zevon's "Hasten Down the Wind" from the live "Stand in the Fire" live album - Warren acknowledges her saving him "from starvation"
There are not many artists who have had as much success without really doing original music as her.
She also was one of the female artists who helped pave the way for those who followed her, it was predominantly a male industry when she was coming up.
Highly recommend the "Still Within the Sound of my Voice" documentary about her made a couple years ago.
Watching interviews with her - she is intelligent, articulate, strong and surprisingly humble. Maybe just a little bit attractive too 🙄🤣😂

Linda is the real deal. Gorgeous vocal timbre, excellent natural pitch, stunning tone and loaded with emotion. I've sung this song hundreds of times and I still love listening to Linda singing it. Outstanding. Pitch is all about hearing the note perfectly in your head first, then the voice follows.

I love Linda and in my opinion, the MOST beautiful voice and BEST looking female singer in her time. Really, no equal or better. Only Judy and Linda can draw tears to my eyes... Linda transcended genres and was simply fabulous with Dolly & Emmy Lou..!!
Man could she sing one of the GREAT ONE'S.
However great this might seem, it's the late 70s, before Linda did Pirates of Penzance and La Boheme. After she tackled those more classical efforts, she trained in ways she never had. And her voice became actually even better, rounder, fuller in her midrange and more comfortable in her head voice. Linda always had amazing talent, but by the time she did the Nelson Riddle albums, she also had incredible control. Seeing her live throughout these changes was amazing. After she did the Riddle albums and then the mariachi music, she was really brilliant live. Always a great talent who became an even greater singer.

Saw Linda at Greek Theater Berkeley in September 1977. A magical night I will always clearly remember!
Right out of High school I went on the road. I have palyed this song everynight for 6 nights a week for 4 years. I played rock in high school but back then Country was where the money was. I can still play it in my sleep / Linda ws one of my heros.
When you think about the fact that these are live, one-shot moments in time without the "benefit" of modern technology, it's mind boggling. There's one spot where she dances around the note (maybe around the "world is mine"). Now imagine having to sing backup behind that talented a singer. 🙂
Don Henley did magnificent backing vocals for her. I identified them way after becoming an Eagles fan and his harmonies are always so spot on that when I found out it was him I was so thrilled! He sings so carefully so as not to overshadow her and really does such a great job.
OH MY.. I don't even know where to start. This was wonderful. Truly an amazing performance that shows us all how talented Linda Ronstadt really was, a total pro!

Linda Ronstadt is and was always amazing . In the early 70’s I was coming home from military service to my parents home in St Petersburg, Fl . They lived directly on the water in an area called Big Bayou. I have always imposed the words Blue Bayou to Big Bayou and it fits pretty well. Your no good was another favorite. Thank You Linda .
