  • Here is the story my major label recording career. I got signed for the first time at age 36 and it was a disaster of epic proportions. Be careful what you wish for.

I'm not even 60 seconds in to this video and I want you to know as a 26 year old self described "failure", this series has been so good for me to hear. The stories about your college auditions and afterwards, and now this. I've said it from the first time I watched you, but your channel truly is a gold mine and you are doing musicians and guitarists such a big favor by posting these in depth videos every week.

Rick, those stories are hilarious. I mean it's great to see you looking back at this stuff, being able to laugh it up and see how ridiculous things were and yet realize that they made what you are today. I love those insights, really appreciated. I am still working through your book and it's amazing.
If I'm ever in Atlanta, I guess i need to hit the studio with you sir.
Anyways, thanks again for all the quality, humerous content you put out there for all of us and only the best of luck. I see your channel and yt business growing. I'm sure you'll get the silver play button by the end of this year.
    Greetings from Germany.

Hey Rick, I recently (within the last 8 months) moved to Marietta. I've started a progressive metal band with a friend of mine in Decatur, and I'm working with an old bassist of mine over the internet on a symphonic metal project. I'm 28 (turning 29 soon, the years, they fly by) and I've really been enjoying these story videos. They make me feel less like I'm just spinning my wheels with this. Music is massively important to me, and I want to make a life of it, even if it's just a meager one. These videos are great because they inspire me to keep going. Thank You so much for sharing!
I love all of your content (the lessons are so in depth, and Sounding Off is really off to a great start, I look forward to seeing more of those!) and I really feel like I've learned a lot from watching your videos. Please keep doing this! I'd be really interested in some videos about producing and arranging for rock bands.
Edit: A Sounding Off episode with Marty Friedman would be mindblowing.

I’ll be honest, I’m glad I found your channel. Before I started doing what I do on CZcams now, I used to dream of being in a full fledged band with some mates from school. I played with those guys for four years or more given our marching/jazz/pep band start (pretty small school, tight knit), and they played some mean instruments. COVID put a damper on things before senior year even wrapped up, but even in my first two semesters of college (and, really, very recently) I held out hope that putting a band together that could get signed would be a good call. Given this story… mmm… maybe not the right thing for me, least of all my mates. Just seems… risky, uncertain as to actually seeing massive stardom. Awesome video anyway, Rick!

Hello Rick - I have just discovered you on youtube and your storys about major labels and the music business are awesome!!! What a story about your first ban! What a rollercoaster ride! I think you are the very best person who can help me. I am (actually a sound engineer) I evolved to a whole a video producer, actually I am managing and producing the german version of a huge top 10 channel (Top 10 best avengers moments - this kind of video) by myself for them - so in regards of Top 10 Lists, I have a very solid track record...but as you know the internet business is more than tough and let me put it that way I have dry bread and water for breakfast, lunch and supper (despite we germans love our bread though ;) - But with what you can help me - "This is the situation" I knew that this could not go on for long otherwise I would be destroyed financially so I thought of doing my own top 10 channel. And because usually it is third party content I thought how to grow the channel best. And my solution was: Start with music lists - Maybe you have heard about the GEMA situation in germany - an ongoing law thing with universal, the greman and youtube - as a result almost all big records in germany have been blocked from youtube for years. UNTIL NOW - the problem is solved - and I saw an opportunity - I contacted the universal music group germany, pitched my channel idea and now we have the situation that I could do Top 10 lists for the german market with their content exclusively - We are close to struck a deal - every skype call about concept etc is done - the next thing next week will be ...serious talk about contracts in berlin in their headquarters...now - knowing that they really could screw me bacause...they are universal - what shall I do - may I ask them for an advance to start with the best conditions...or shouldn`t I "beg"...you have to understand me - for 10 years - as an audio engineer, cutter etc people had screwed me over...have been the kind of the person who always wanted to do things for free...and in a few days I will be in a position to negotiate with universal on my own...I am actually a little bit overchallenged - I thought maybe you can give me 2-3 hints how to deal with universal in this particular case - I think maybe we could do a skype call youtube video out of this, could be interesting for your audience I think...but this is just a thought. Sorry for the long text though!

Your lessons are great. It's so interesting to learn the theory how you can analyse beautiful cords.I play the Hammond B3, Drums, And I am a singer. I also play the guitar, flute and for a year ago I start playing the viol. Sooo... you tell us if we wanna pay you for the lessons. Is it possible to that via Paypal? If you wanna hear a song , I put out JUST one of mine; You can do that on Spotify. Artist: Henrik af Ugglas Song: "When I Go" And I will promise you that: I have a lot of stuff to tell you. Kind Regards/Henrik

I forgot to talk about the producer crying on the phone to our singer on the days he wasn't showing up because of a fight with his wife. :)

But, hey, you got to meet Metheny and Brecker during that otherwise horrible experience. I bet that was awesome. So it wasn't a complete loss . . . not to mention that it allowed you to hone your engineering and producing chops. And when you mix that with your vast knowledge of music theory and unique ability to share and teach that knowledge with others, then it's no wonder your CZcams channel has grown so quickly. It's certainly one of my favorite CZcams channels for all things music. Thank you for sharing your story!

Gosh I wish you people would just find another hobby: why would a record company invest in an artist that won't need the company in one year because they're so popular
