I learned my lesson about house wires about 50 years ago after getting lit up from an outlet that I PULLED THE FUSE OUT OF THE PANEL before working on it! Took me 3 hours to find the spot where they spliced this wire wrong in a Junction box... Neutral and Ground are NOT THE SAME THING!!
After that if I could not physically pull the main breaker I would not do the job! I'm NOT an electrician but I've built houses, wired and plumbed houses my entire life and I've done a LOT of minor repairs for people over the years and I've seen some crazy insane things people will do to "get by"... Like using "pipe dope" & black tape to "fix" a slow leak in a Natural Gas line going into a Cook range & Oven!! Like mixing neutral and black wires in a breaker box in a trailer home and then not understanding why you kept getting a charge off the doorknob whenever it rained!! Or Duck tape to keep the broke Sewer line attached to your toilet... I could go on forever!
