Saw him live in Manchester, CT a few years back. Absolutely hilarious guy. But the comedy club was located in a mall and the power went out so no booze and people were pissssssed. He did an impromptu set for about a half-hour outside (standing on a bench so people could see him) and then took picture for another half hour before going in and doing his actual set. Great dude and happy he wove a sincere moment into the set without it being stupid.

My dad wasn't that way. If I got in a fight in school, (which was a regular occurence), he'd leave work, pull me out of school & take me down a back road, and give me a good belting. With his belt. My mom used a wooden spoon, usually for the same fight. He never encouraged me to fight back, but I did anyways, because I was always being bullied. I got the belt because I was a 3rd grader who got in a fight with a 6th grader. Dad's mom told him to fight back, or it was his Grandpa. My two kid brothers got to learn karate. 😡🤬

I got no encouragement to stand up for myself, or talk back. And I always got punished for trying to do so. My mom even threatened me with prison at age 13. I was the bullies favorite victim. I love the way his dad taught him to defend himself instead of protecting him. Brad is an AWESOME man, thanks to his dad being there for his son, and teaching the important things. This is why dads are so important in children's lives, so dads that actually stuck around their child and raised them, we wanna thank those dads. Also thank the dads that came back to check on the welfare of their children if he had parted from his mom, and apologized to their children for not being there for them, and trying to make things right. Happy Father's Day to these fathers.

I was welling up, ain't gonna lie. I never knew my Dad. He was around for only the first two years or so of my life and then he split to be with his other family (yes, he had two now). Mom never went after him. Never made a deal about it. She did make me grow up to hate him, however.
Until the day she showed me an article in the local paper and after reading it she asked me what I thought of the dude in the story.
      "Fucking jet trash." I say.
      "That's your Father." She says.
Then the truth came out. Dad, it seemed, was a philanderer indeed, but he loved my Mom and he loved his two families, but times were different then. Though he embraced his inner scumbag, she admitted to me that near every day of my life she could see more and more of him in me. Mannerisms, ways of speaking, charisma, presence...shit like that. Hated this man all my life, he ended up a scumbag cheating old ladies outta their pensions...but now I wanted to meet him. Now that I know way more about him than I ever did.
      And I got my chance.
      At his funeral.
And lemme tell you - it was like looking in a fucking mirror when I peered down into that casket. I was my Dad. Except taller. I even remember the horrified look on the dude's face when he was out front regaling the audience about my Dad and who he was and all that shit and that man never took his eyes off me the entire time. He knew. He knew who I was. He had know. My brother and sister (whom I never met and didn't know) were in the front row and I kept praying for this man to look any other direction because if any of them turned around, things could get ugly in a hurry.
They never did, thankfully. I kept my cool and laid low as everyone was filing out to head to the graveyard. I was one of two people left in the room, the other being some guy prepping the casket for transport. I walked up to him and his face went white. He knew too. He had to know.
I gave him a letter I wrote for my Dad, forgiving him and myself. Him for leaving, and me for hating him my whole life. Apologising that and lamenting that I never had the chance to at least see him and talk to him even once in a KNOWN life. I asked that it be put in with him and buried with him but that no soul on this planet could ever know it was in there because I wasn't sure the other family knew about us. He just nodded and put his hand on my shoulder.
My Dad may have been a scumbag in the end, but according to my Mom, while he was with us he adored us and loved us like no other. One of my biggest regrets in my life is that I allowed myself to hate so willingly on a man I've never met and whose side of the story I never got to hear. One of my biggest joys though is that my Mom finally allowed herself to say, "You're your Father's son all right." She still sees him in me every day.
Thanks Dad. You may have died a scumbag but you did your best.
