WTF Happened to these Crossings?!

  • I drove through Cambridge Springs, PA today after recording two sirens for Erie County's quarterly siren test, and I stumbled upon 3 crossings with major issues, all of which I had only photographed a month prior and no issues were seen then.
First two crossings are Church St. and Main St., and these two really has me baffled. They're intersect right next to the WNYP tracks in town and both crossings had older gated signals with pedestrian gates. When I arrived there today, I discovered the pedestrian gates were removed entirely and the main signals had their gates removed. Most bizarrely though is that both relay cases are gone! That means these signals can no longer operate, and they're along an active mainline! Seriously, what on earth is going on here?! There's some conduit at the crossing so it appears that the signals were going to be replaced soon, but that doesn't explain why they're disconnected now with no replacement signals nearby.
Then at US 6 just west of these 2 crossings, WNYP had just installed brand new signals replacing older WRRS signals and a new WCH signal, and all of the lights are disarrayed and not facing the way they should be. Again, these signals were only installed within the month prior so to have them already looking like they've been through a tornado is very odd.
This is either an intentional sabotage by an outside force, or WNYP has some SERIOUS issues, because this has to be the craziest set of crossings I've ever seen, and again considering I only photographed them a month prior just makes this even more confusing. Hopefully I found out more about these soon.

They are probably just doing a complete crossing upgrade...the new grade makes me believe that those old signals will be removed. I don’t know what’s going on with the bent lights though! Haha!

I believe they are being upgraded, but why then did they remove the relay cases for the crossings rendering them inoperable, and still leaving the roads open for cars to go through?

I grew up in the little ghost town, and there used to be 2 sets of tracks going through town, instead of just one. One was Penn Central, and the other, I believe, was Erie Lackawanna. Sometime between 1985 and 1990, the other set of tracks was torn up, leaving just the one. The lights at Main and Church St used to flash red when a train came through as well. I think even as far back as 1991, the trains still rolled through town on a regular basis, now they are lucky to get 2-3 per day from what I heard from friends who still live there.

@@rcsrailfaningproductions1225 Agreed! By turn many of the signal lights away it is to indicate that the signals are not yet active. It typically is the Railroad's responsibility to stop and "flag" these crossings before they are able to proceed, that is, unless Railroad personnel show up here so to personally "flag" and stop the traffic when WNY&P arrives so that the train crew won't have to stop and do it.

I think they might’ve been in the process of upgrading the crossings at the time you took this. I remember seeing a new signal on my Subdivision lying on the ground, ready to take over. Eventually, the new signals took over and the old signals were gone. This has happened many times on my local subdivision due to double-tracking projects.

It looks like a case of signal equipment replacement. By turning the flasher lamps away it is supposed to say that they are not yet active. Very likely, the WNY&P will stop and "flag" these crossings or, they will dispatch a crew to show up here with their vehicles, being ready to "flag" the traffic to stop ✋, so the train crew will not have to stop their train so that the Conductor can stop the traffic.
Can you tell me how long those nearby traffic signals have been in place?
Very possible here, they might be waiting for the Town's officials and their DPW personnel so that they are able to "integrate" the nearby traffic signals so that certain lights will turn red before the flashers activates. Why would you want to have the nearby traffic signal give you a green light when immediately afterwards you will be crossing the WNY&P, with its signal lights flashing indicating the approach of a train? Much of this pertains to liability issues, possibly to the Town!

I think I might have solved one of your issues. Google Maps Street View has an image taken four months ago showing this intersection with new relay cases, new crossing signals with gates and new stoplights. The approaches closest to the tracks more closely resemble the Lincoln Way at 4th Street intersection in DeKalb, IL where the UP cuts more or less diagonally through the intersection. You must, however, look at a Street View image just to the northwest of the Main and Church intersection (on the yellow part of Church) because most images on the other approaches were taken four years ago. As for why they didn't leave the old signals in place before the new ones were functional, I always thought it was standard operating procedure (CN is doing so while it gates several crossings in my town), but I guess that's up to the railroad.
I also think this is a good time for me to get off social media for the day.
