As someone who has suffered with insomnia for years, I feel like the most frightening part is the uncontrollable emotions. I have experienced everything from blind rage because I stubbed my toe to hysterical sobbing because I didn't have ice cream in the freezer. It's like being a passenger in your own body, you know it's not a rational reaction, you know it's not that bad, but you can't control your emotions and you can only watch as your ID responds first.
Well im not sure if you still have it now, but if so I hope it gets better, and one day maybe even cured for life.

If "dying resets the effects" is a reliable, functioning method of surviving this apocalypse, there would be MUCH more people that could sleep just like the girl or the woman. After the power outage and insomnia, a lot of accidents and crashes would happen, people would be electrocuted back to life, and their numbers would be more than 2, it would not be such an uncommon event
it's not that they died but died and were resuscitated if the brother wasn't shocked back to life or the little wasn't given cpr both would have been dead
Ah but electricity is down so with communication down there are only 2 that are known.
My thought as well
@@SF-jg7rrits not like resuscitation doesnt happen every day
Fun fact for people who don't dip or chew snuff: the reason for sticking tobacco and coffee grinds in between the teeth and gums is because the gums are an easier way for effects of both to enter the bloodstream so that way it all goes to your brain within a few minutes.
Also in the military sticking coffee grinds in between your gums is called Ranger Dip

This is probably the most terrifying premise of a movie I can imagine. Horror typically has elements that are so improbable or out right impossible that they don’t freak me out that much. But I’ve experienced bouts of insomnia, pretty sure most people have. Which makes this pretty damn scary, imho.

Has anyone considered meditation as a possible way to beat it? It would be the closest form to sleep I can think of. Laying still with your eyes closed drifting could be the closest alternative to sleep. Think of it like capping out right before sleep but using that as your form of sleeping.
As a human being you need to reach the R.E.M. stage of sleep for your mind to heal. You do not reach R.E.M. state with meditation.
I have chronic insomnia and have tried this pretty often and it unfortunately doesn't work much at all. Your brain and body have to be fully "offline" for the maintenance that happens during sleep to occur. It would probably save some energy but it won't rejuvenate you like sleep.
Love how the solution boils down to have you turned it off and on yet.

Fun fact: there is actually a syndrome that slowly gets worse which will kill you from sleep deprivation. It starts as normal insomnia and slowly gets worse until you can no longer sleep an then you die. There is no cure and sleeping tablets don't work. The only way you will be able to sleep is by being put under anesthesia.
Luckily it is pretty rare.
FFI, fatal familial insomnia? Yeah, scary stuff. It's genetic though, so until the bloodline dies off and there's no genetic mutations anytime soon...
Outta curiosity, doesn't get knocked out count as sleep????
Like, could I just have my friend knock me out with a frying pan and get a couple winks that way??
Probbably not as you wouldn't acess rem sleep and you would wake up as soon you got oxygen or got better.
That’s what the first test at the hub with the little girl was for. They gave her an anesthetic to knock her out, because they’d already discovered that only the people who could sleep would succumb to it. Which means having someone try to knock you out would only leave you in severe pain or dead.

Though by the end of the film isn't she more by antagonist? I mean her daughter could be the solution to all this, and she keeps her away from the people looking for a cure until it's way to late, with 2 points of reference they could have figured out it was dying sooner and saved a lot of scientists to help rebuild, but instead her daughter is going to be starting an inbred society with her brother until it's wiped out from genetic defects.

Honestly though, no not really because if there is no cure then trying to survive doesn't help you or the human race because you can't exactly reboot humans without the sperm needed to fertilize the eggs and lets be fair all the sperm and eggs stored in sperm banks all died a day or two after the world wide power failure. Humans are social creatures and to live in a world where you are the only living human in your area (because let's be fair the 13-16 year old girl isn't going to hope on a jet and fly across the world to see if there where survivors in other countries) would be a living hell and would be worse they dying at the same time as everyone else. Surviving would be the last thing you would want in this scenario. You could equate it to "Would you rather die in 10ish days from starvation or would you rather amputate your arms and legs and eat them and survive for 3 months until you kill yourself from the insanity social isolation would cause?" Like if there is not a cure and you are the only remaining human within a traveling distance that doesn't require modern technology, living longer would just be torturing the girl for zero reason because like I said you can't reboot humans without the egg and sperm and well all the sperm and eggs at the sperm banks will have died due to the power outage. So honestly allowing testing is the best idea because best case scenario they figure out it was the temporary death that caused her to be able to sleep, and worst case scenario she dies quicker not having to worry about the tortures of total social isolation in a world where technology has been set back a handful of centuries since there is no one around to be able to get any of the power grids back up and running even if the equipment wasn't permanently damaged from what caused the power outage.
Honestly the setup of "they're so sleep deprived that they're gonna make dumb choices" is a great way to excuse characters making particularly stupid choices that make a movie interesting. They gave themselves a way to make character choices believable--I respect that setup tbh.
Meh, we complain about characters making dumb decisions in movies, but did you all forget that the first thing people did when they were told about a pandemic with a 2% mortality was to buy ridiculous amounts of toilet paper? LMAO
Yeah I kept saying to myself when they made dumb decisions I couldn’t get mad😭😭
It's not an excuse for dumb choices, it's literally the premise of the movie. Impaired judgement is a consequence of sleep deprivation, i.e. dumb choices are intentionally written around the plot, not the other way round.

The common mistake survivors made is that they did not sleep at all, sure they can't, but you still have your body rest in bed even when you aint falling asleep. I would assume that 8 hours of resting would be equal to 1-2 hours of sleeping, but why would you waste 1/3 of a day just to prolong your death by 4-5 days

Looking at just the church building alone gives some interesting layout hints as to what kind of church it is. Small congregation, probably 100-150 on a good day. Small pulpit, one piano, kind of resembling small rural baptist/churches of christ (minus the piano). Probably leaning more traditionalist since 1 piano and minimal tech, and the stained glass is just a classic nice touch. I had to lose 1-2 nights of sleep here and there often at some point in my life, my personal "best" is around 3 nights which is where those people are supposedly at day 1, but I definitely wasn't bad enough to even think about harming anyone, let alone a child, I was just really super mega tired and braindead, but I still could somewhat function. You get these random manic-like high energy states here and there while sleep deprived, but they don't make you dangerous, you're just very excitable (kinda like when drunk?). I'm also mentally ill, so if I didn't go bonkers I seriously doubt a healthy person would.
You are incorrect.
An apocalypse I would never thought of and something I am extremely terrified of

What was crazy is how obvious the solution was, at least to the audience. You'd think they could figure it out too!
Most fully aware people are only functionally intelligent. Most people would be idiots after a day of insomnia...
Learning that we actually missed an emp event by 9 days is freaky to think how different ours lives would be

Its so fascinating that scientists dont know or can explain why we and other animals need to sleep. If you say its to get energy, we get energy from many things including food meaning that if energy was the only reason, we could just stuff ourself 2x more than normal and be able to never sleep. Imagine how much more we could do if we had 24 hours a day and the ability to only sleep for comfort rather than neccesity.

Sort of, yes. That is the premise of shock paddles as well. To interupt the electrical pathways so the body restarts in rhythm rather than chaotic firing.

Well what else are you gonna do? You need to think to survive
Ok, the beginning of the movie reminds me of a book trilogy called "The Rule of Three", where basically the entire world loses all sorts of power not unlike the movie. I suggest reading it, because although it doesn't have the insomniac elements like this movie, the survival stuff is still very much related.
If there was no electricity or communication anywhere how would they know if those two were the "only ones in the world" who could sleep?

As a person who requires medication to sleep, I can relate to this movie.
That something will one day knock out the power grid is a certainty. We should work out beforehand what we’d do otherwise panic and chaos will follow.
