Omg yesssss! I love SHINee's cover of Dear Name! I listen to it all the time. I love their raw vocals and I wish they would do stuff like this more often, unplugged, just them and their mics, maybe some acoustic stuff or even just acapella.
AKMU is the best duo I've ever seen, the brother (Chanhyuk) is a fucking genius composer and the sister (Suhyun) has an incredible voice and when they sing together its just great

At this point i want IU to collaborate with every artist and idol groups in korea lol. I nearly cried tears of joy when shinee was on IU’s Palette talk show🥲
SHINee's version of "Dear Name" is different than IU's original version, so if you haven't heard the original version I encourage you to check it out. If you pay attention to the lyrics of the song you will see why this song is so meaningful to SHINee -- SHINee's version of the song is dedicated to Jonghyun. So the "Dear Name" they are talking about is Jonghyun.
Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun and IU were really good friends and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun always said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind.
Because IU and Jonghyun were so close, she knows the deep meaning "Dear Name's" lyrics have for all of them, so she was surprised that out of all of her songs, this was the one SHINee chose to sing -- that is why I think she was so still and quiet during their performance and didn't really look at them, because it was super emotional for all of them and she didn't want to cause herself or any of the SHINee members to break down if they made eye contact.
As you may know, IU debuted 4 months after SHINee and she has been given the title of "the nation's little sister." She is known for her amazing vocal range and for her cute bubbly personality. She is also one of Korea's top actresses -- she has even acted in a drama with Minho. And she has had song collaborations with Key and Taemin when they were younger. In the show, IU actually mentioned how Onew was one of her favorite male voices and they even talked about how they should do a collaboration together.
Fun fact No. 2: The order you see the members of SHINee sitting in, is the order that they always sit or stand in since debut days. They will always stand with Onew on the left, Taemin next to him, (Jonghyun in the middle,) Minho next and Key on the right. Even their starting positions in their choreography will often have them standing in this order. You almost never see them in interviews or in press photos, not in that order.
As you known, SHINee are known for their ballads and for their amazing harmonies, that is why they are so highly respected in the industry. Their live vocals are unmatched and everyone in the industry idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. Even as rookies they were highly respected by their seniors and peers for their live vocal abilities and the fact that they sound even better live then they do recorded. SHINee live are on a whole other level. They are some of the best vocalists in the industry. And just think, Minho is the main rapper of the group. How often do you see a rapper that can sing as well as him?
IU also did a cover of SHINee's song "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" in this same interview. IU's remixed version is super cool and unique. What makes her version even more interesting is the fact that she remixed it herself -- if you watch the whole interview you will see the behind the scenes of her actually remastering the song. Both covers are way different then their original versions.

It will help you to get to know SHINee better and to learn a little more about IU. This interview will help you to understand why SHINee are so highly respected by their peers and what it was like in the early days for SHINee, etc. (SHINee were on the show promoting for their "Don't Call Me" comeback, so this was in February.)

I actually loved when all SHINee members sang in unison. It’s nice to hear their different voices while they were singing in unison.

That’s fair enough, I personally find unison underwhelming a lot of the times because it’s very straight forward and simple. Hearing the textures blend whilst in harmony adds an excitement and depth for me.

great reaction! You really have discovered Korea's shining star, IU. She is highly respected and the idol of all idols, known for her award-winning songwriting, producing, live singing, and acting! All of her albums and songs since 2015 have been written and produced by her and several songs composed by her as well. There really are so many videos you could check out, some of my favorites are Love Poem (live clip), Dear Name (live clip), Knees (live clip), Raindrop and Heart (live concert), Lullaby, they all have amazing vocals which I'm sure you will appreciate

Since this was a discovering iu vocal video it wouldve been nice to see your reaction to iu covering her guests songs rather than the other way around but im sure you were just unfamiliar with the palette format. IU covered shinees sherlock & itzys surf in their respective episodes. As for akmu nakka was actually a song they released together. Looking forward to future iu reactions!

Ah, you haven’t reacted to AKMU yet? I love them, they are amazing. A brother-sister duo, I think Chanhyuk (the brother) writes all or almost all the songs and Suhyun has one of the prettiest female voices in Kpop. She’s my favorite female vocalist. Their music is always so uniquely them. I hope you’ll try some of their music out! I recommend you try out “Dinosaur”, “Melted”, “Rebye” and “How can I love the heartbreak, you’re the one I love”.
Suhyun was on a show called Sea of Hope with Onew and sang some duets with him! Please check those out too if you can. ❤️

IU and kim Eana wrote the song dear name for the kids that died on the ferry tragedy. She writes like 90% of the songs and the lyrics are always beautiful and meaningful.
Theres a better translated version of my sea. She wrote it with such beautiful lyrics this translation didn’t do it justice, especially the part about “child so long time”
It was actual talking about herself “did the child, endure such pain for such a long time, to just become me”

actually, i liked the part where SHINee sang in unison, not in harmony in Dear Name. The lyrics of Near Name has a lot of meaning to SHINee members as well. Of course, we are not sure when the sang the song, they thought of Jonghyun a lot or not because they’ve never mentioned that after this performance. but at least as a listener and a fan, when i heard them singing Dear Name, it touched me a lot because i could feel their emotion and sincerity piercing through the song. the way they sang and the lyrics reminded me a lot of Jonghyun and made me cry. personally i loved their choice of using unison in that reason. not really decorated or calculated, it sounded very honest and sincere to me. felt like they were yelling that line out to Jonghyun. well…of course it could be just my personal preference i guess?:))
btw haven’t you reacted to AKMU before? i am surprised! such a talented sibling with great musicality.

I don’t know if you know it but that high note in My Sea was recorded in one take. That’s how absurd she is! The og Dear Name has a special place in my heart but when I first heard SHINee sing it I couldn’t stop crying or forget about it for three straight days…

about My Sea... its a self-written song abt her "self search" (from teens until now), she actually has a bunch of song like this, even an "Age series" when she talked/sang abt her age and her feeling in that time. Age series : 23, Palette, Eight, and (arguable) Lilac.

The four Shinee members all had to try their hardest to sing Dear Name. IU herself has said it is the hardest song for her to sing. And yet, she did it by herself and nailed it in a live performance, making it look so effortless
On the drama Dreamhigh IU said she had perfect pitch. It was a drama about idols training and going to high school

I hope you watch more of the palette episode with AKMU. The song Nakka was a collaboration they did for AKMU's album Next Episode. Lee Chanhyuk, the brother wrote this song as well as the song Ah puh on IU's Lilac. Maybe this will get you to discover AKMU and the sister Lee Suhyun who was on the show Begin Again seasons 2, 3 and 4 where Korean artists form a group and busking different countries.

Whenever they release new songs, they kill all music chart in Korea with their songs from the top in Korea. There was no exception since their debut. Every Koreans know them and love them but idols. We have God damn tooooooooooo many idols. Most Koreans are tired of new idols comes out every week. We really wish some proper singers or musicians comes out like IU & AKMU. I am really sad.. I like idols music too. I just want some diversity.. Koreans at my ages do not listen to new music anymore. Kpop Idol industry eat out all young talented musicians to their category..Things are getting worse and worse.. Because most foreign kpop fans are focusing on idols..T.T I want you guys listen to various genre in Kpop.
