I think it's his stylistic choice. Onew used to use his chest voice most of the time, even when doing high notes. His vocal placement is frontal and straightforward, sometimes straining himself, with very visible veins on his neck (if that makes sense, sorry eng is not my first language). Only in recent years we can hear his head voice & falsetto more than before, with better technique. He said he is taking vocal lessons to be able to sing for a long time, in a way that does not damaging his throat. Because he had vocal cord nodule surgery before.
Just wanted to clarify that he didn't have bad technique all the time. Pre-surgery, Onew was on shows, musical plus doing promotions. Fatigue and falling back on bad habits when tired most likely caused his vocal injury. And for context, they lost a member who had the highest range in the group. I believe Onew took lessons to polish his skills to sing within that higher range. To supplement/support the other members who also will have to work harder to sing within that higher range. Which is great overall but I hope Onew doesn't loose that rounder sound he has. I love the contrast and depth his sound provides to the group.
SHINee's version of "Dear Name" is different than IU's original version, so if you haven't heard the original version I encourage you to check it out. If you pay attention to the lyrics of the song you will see why this song is so meaningful to SHINee -- SHINee's version of the song is dedicated to Jonghyun, SHINee's main vocalist who passed away 4 years ago. So the "Dear Name" they are talking about is Jonghyun.
Fun fact: IU's song "Gloomy Clock" -- one of her older songs -- was wrote by Jonghyun. Jonghyun and IU were really good friends and when she heard "Gloomy Clock" she asked him to give it to her. Jonghyun always said that after hearing IU sing "Gloomy Clock" he knew the song was meant for her, and in hindsight he thinks he might have subconsciously wrote the song with her in mind.
Because IU and Jonghyun were so close, she knows the deep meaning "Dear Name's" lyrics have for all of them, so she was surprised that out of all of her songs, this was the one SHINee chose to sing -- that is why I think she was so still and quiet during their performance and didn't really look at them, because it was super emotional for all of them and she didn't want to cause herself or any of SHINee members to break down if they made eye contact. (She didn't ask them to cover her song, SHINee suggested it, and she knows how amazing of singers they are, she is a fan of SHINee and she knows them very well.)
IU (pronounced I.U., which is a stage name that means You and I combined together to make one through music -- her real name is Lee JiEun, but almost no one calls her by her real name) didn't sing with SHINee because the whole premise of this segment of the show is that they covered each other's songs. IU also did a cover of SHINee's song "Sherlock (Clue & Note)" in this same interview. But if you have never heard SHINee's version, check out the original version first, so you can understand just how unique and cool IU's remixed version was. Both covers are way different then their original versions.
As you may know, IU is a solo Kpop artist who debuted 4 months after SHINee, who is known as "the nation's little sister." She is known for her amazing vocal range and for her cute bubbly personality. She is also one of Korea's top actresses -- she has even acted in a drama with Minho, who is also a top male actor. And she has had song collaborations with Key and Taemin when they were younger.
In the show, IU actually mentioned how Onew was one of her favorite male voices and they talked about how they should do a collaboration together -- which I am sure would be heavenly. (Frankly, after 13 years I'm surprised that they haven't collaborated together already.) Onew is known as one of the premier voices in Kpop. He is one of the most coveted male vocalists in the industry that all singers dream of getting the chance to sing with. He can be paired with almost anyone and somehow his voice is able to highlight the other singers' voices, and take the song to a whole new level, no matter their vocal style. He has such impressive vocal talent and understanding of how to use his voice that he has the ability to compliment the vocal timbre and style of anyone he is singing with.
All of the SHINee members' voices are very dynamic. SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. Most fans (SHINee World or Shawol for short) will tell you we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed, with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop".
The order you see the members of SHINee sitting in, is the order that they always sit or stand in since debut days. They will always stand with Onew on the left, Taemin next to him, (Jonghyun in the middle,) Minho next and Key on the right. Even their starting positions in their choreography will often have them standing in this order. You almost never see them in interviews or in press photos, not in that order.
When SHINee debuted in 2008, Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14, so now they are all in their late 20s and early 30s. (Onew turned 32 in December.) SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry.
Onew (Pronounced Oh-New, real name Lee JinKi) is the leader of the group and he has one of the most unique and best voices in the industry. (Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) His vocals are unmatched.
Key is our fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment, so Key is known for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also known as SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker.
Minho is the main rapper and visual of the group, but, as you can see, his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is a top actor and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. He is also known as a top athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win.
Taemin is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry, and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. He is also one of the most popular solo artists in Kpop and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM. Taemin truly is art when it comes to his performances.
Although Jonghyun wasn't in this performance, in order to get to know SHINee, you have to get to know him as well. He is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy" and songs for Taemin, IU and Lee HI, etc. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills.
You just discovered why SHINee still hold one of the top spots after more than 13 years in the industry. SHINee are part of the second generation of Kpop and yet they are younger than most everyone in their generation and are the same age or even younger than many members of groups who came after them, such as EXO and BTS, etc., which are part of Kpop's third generation. SHINee debuted young and have the experience of seasoned veterans.
SHINee are known for their ballads and for their amazing harmonies, that is why they are so highly respected in the industry. Their live vocals are unmatched and everyone in the industry idolizes them for the amount of talent they have. Even as rookies they were highly respected by their seniors and peers for their live vocal abilities and the fact that they sound even better live then they do recorded. SHINee live are on a whole other level. They are some of the best vocalists in the industry. And just think, Minho is the main rapper of the group. How often do you see a rapper that can sing as well as him?
Onew is also known for his ability to hold notes for a very long time. He actually holds the record for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch -- 40+ seconds -- when he performed a cover of the song "Friend" in concert. czcams.com/video/l5wJDyko5z8/video.html

It will help you to get to know SHINee better and to learn a little more about IU. This interview will help you to understand why SHINee are so highly respected by their peers and what it was like in the early days for SHINee and Kpop in general, etc. (SHINee were on the show promoting for their "Don't Call Me" comeback, so this episode originally aired in February 2021.)
onew has my favorite voice in the world.
Onew is so good proyecting his voice. There's a video where they are doing karaoke and he doesn't have a mic but you can hear his voice really high, also there's a wedding video and he is sharing a mic with Taemin but you can hear him even without the mic.
I love her reaction, and the way she really knows what she is talking about, i wish she could check out Selene 6.23 or sleepless night, i think she would love Jonghyun's voice too🙏🏻
That was such an interesting analysis and so detailed I loved it. I hope you check out more Shinee! I really love them and their voices and especially when they harmonize! I don't know much about singing or mics or what you said about the sensitivity of the mics but Onew's voice is always pretty loud and super clear even without a mic so I don't know if they really changed anything about the sensitivity of his mic or edited something in post production. Just wanted to add that 😁

heh that's just our jinki, he's really loud. i think he's got the loudest voice in kpop. he projects so well. and the end is just him, he does those light touches to his voice so well!
Onew is know in the industry to have the loudest voice in Kpop. It's not the first Time that he sing with his mic like that. 😂
If you watch more Onew videos, you'll notice that he distances his microphone consistently. Even on those earhook microphones he will position further from his mouth. I think he does this to help control his volume, as he has a very powerful voice.
I cried when this first aired knowing that they probably chose this song thinking about Jonghyun, the 5th member who took his own life a few years back, whom IU was also friends with. Key doesn’t normally breathe with his shoulders, they’ve been in the industry for 15 years now but I feel like it was more emotional especially since he was the closest with Jonghyun in the group. His voice cracked a bit right there and I think he was probably pushing past his emotions. Imagine singing a song by a singer to the singer who was close with your best friend and the song is about forgetting someone’s name as time passes after they are no longer in your life, hoping that when they meet again, they will remember their name. As it was originally written, it is IU singing about her past self and losing sight of who she was but Shinee’s version is gut wrenching.
“Koreans have smaller voices and with their technique have even smaller voices”…. Yea let’s just generalize an entire ethnicity based on reacting only to similar vocal types and disregard that there are many types of voices and volumes (as a “Vocal coach” something I hope you’d know and respect). Also, as shown here clearly disregarding anyone who doesn’t fit your assumption on the entire race.
Constructive criticism: Next time, try saying, either he has a louder singing voice than the others (which is true), or his mic sensitivity is turned up much higher than the others. Also, don’t generalize entire groups of people. It’s not a good look.

Thank you for reacting on SHINee and this is really an interesting one.SHINee hailed as "Princes Of Kpop" and known as King Of Live Performances is consist of 5 members.Onew who have the most high voice on this video,next to him is Taemin (also hailed as MJ of Kpop),Minho and then Key. One member is sadly physicaly not with them enymore,Jonghyun (known as one of the most greatest Kpop vocalist) lost his battle against deppression on Dec 18, 2017 (always remembered,always loved,may his soul rest in peace). SHINee has a very interesting vocals,they are all unique on their own but perfectly blend together. I think on this particular video,this is Onew's stylistic choice, can you believe he is not trained never went on classical music class but he perfectly sang "Nessun Dorma". The 3 of them has their in ear piece but Jinki doesn't have it.
I appreciate the detailed analysis of their voices and singing habits. But the multiple pauses at onew's ending bit was a bit too much to me. It would be better to just appreciate the song bit in verses till they are done singing before you start with the comments tho. Thanks for the reaction.
Thank you for your detail reaction, i love it. This performance is one of my favourite. SHINee's harmonies is magical. I'm a big fan of Onew's unique and excellent vocal and you can recognise his voice easily.
