  • "Shaw Rising," a documentary depicting the history of Shaw University and our impact on the course of education and social justice in the United States, from our founding in 1865 to the inauguration of our 18th president, Dr. Paulette R. Dillard. The documentary was written and produced by Hal Goodtree, directed by Tim Finkbiner.
Hosted by Shaw Univerity and the National Alumni Association of Shaw University, the national watch party date marks the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) on the campus of Shaw University. The meeting between student leaders of the recent sit-ins and the civil rights elders of the day was facilitated by Shaw alumna and activist Ella Baker. Then-Shaw sophomore Dr. David C. Forbes, Sr. became a founding member of SNCC. The student-led advocacy group went on to become a major force in America's civil rights movement.

Ella Baker was raised in Littleton in Halifax County, NC, where I live, and Dr. Nicholas Franklin Roberts, who was the first Black man to serve as President of Shaw (though it was in an acting role for five months following Tupper's death), was a Mathematics professor there and is from Seaboard in Northampton County, which borders Halifax. Lastly, Dr. James E. Cheek Sr., who is a former Shaw President and the namesake of James E. Cheek Learning Resource Center on campus, was born in Roanoke Rapids in Halifax County.
The oldest alumni chapter of Shaw University is based in Northampton County as well.

This was such an awesome documentary. I'm so glad I was able to watch this and learn about the humble beginnings of Shaw. I am prouder than ever to be a student of Shaw and to forge the path that was created off of the back of its founders!

Dear Old Shaw U has allowed a MANY of "US" (people of color) to turn hopes and dreams into realities; fears into faith. She was birthed in pursuit of "US" in 1865 and has remained a SOLID anchor in our times of storms. While watching this documentary, my whole being was jolted with PRIDE, JOY, and CONFIDENCE. Confidence in knowing that Shaw's history, truth and future will continue to hold "US" steady! Strides To Excellence: Why Not The BEST? #ShawU94 #ShawRising #NoUB4ShawU

I don't mean to offend anybody by mentioning this comparison but its something that I never understood. The Jews in Europe suffered genocide at the hands of the Nazi's for 12 years resulting in World War 2. After WW2 when the world caught wind of the inhumane actions took against the Jews during the Holocaust. The world came together and pathed a road towards the existence of Israel. So basically what I'm saying is, for the 12 years of suffering that the Jews endured they received a WHOLE COUNTRY. Africans were sold into slavery to American colonists around 1492 and this lasted until around 1865. So close to 400 years total and 89 of them years were under the Established United States of America. When the world found out about the evil treatment to slaves and the fact that they were not even considered as human beings, the world did nothing. When looking at these two evil historical events side by side, (The Jews killed during the Holocaust which last 12 years & a estimated 6 million Jews murdered) & then ( Africans sold into slavery, losing all human rights which lasted 400 years & a estimated 60 million + Africans Murdered) How can anybody say that the world's reaction & outcomes to the two separate evil travesties is fair or even in the same ballpark as fair! *___(((___The Jews suffered 12 years, lost 6 million people and the outcome was that the world basically gave them a country (Israel)___)))___* - *___(((___Africans were sold into slavery & suffered for 400 years, lost an estimated 60 million + people and the world ignored this and from the USA they received the thirteenth amendment and was released into a society that was mainly prejudice & hated them.___)))___ How is this justice? & How come nobody ever talks about this Modern Day Comparison ? (American Intermediary) I think that maybe waving African American's home property tax for four hundred years would be a good start to reparations ! (Israel wouldn't exist without the west's intervention, TRUE or False ? Who beside Jews benefited from Israel becoming a country?) (African slaves in the USA were not even treated with the decency or even with recognition that they were human beings in the USA for 400 years. When slaves were freed in the USA they were told good luck. GOOD LUCK catching up to the rest of society financially, GOOD LUCK catching up with the rest of society community wise, GOOD LUCK finding employment with the very little education and skills that slave owners allowed to them while held in slavery, GOOD LUCK SURVIVING IN AMERICA.

I think it would be wise, when talking about oppressed people, to not compare outcomes of two very different issues. I invite you to learn more deeply about each of these issues and in doing so, find your answers.
In a nutshell, take this standpoint and dig deeper: Israel is a primarily white/republican supported country (US white Christian nationalists), the world dumps a lot of support into keeping a military presence in this spot of earth while protecting an allied Jerusalem, also supporting illegal and well known colonialism and violence against Palestinians where once they both lived in peace. The years directly after the war was a strategic move but they really didn't care about Jews from an ethical standpoint, only power.
When considering what's happened post civil war in the US, there are a plethora of movies and documentaries like this to lay out the many many ways black & indigenous people have been mistreated in the US and that the injustice continues today.
Comparing two different oppressed people and pointing to one as having a better outcome is called a 'model minority myth' and all I ask is that you look up this term and consider what harm this way of thinking poses to both groups.
