  • There are few Chicago historical figures whose life and work speak to the current moment more than Ida B. Wells, the 19th century investigative journalist, civil rights leader, and passionate suffragist. WTTW brings you a new CHICAGO STORIES special that tells her story as never before.
Freed from slavery just six months after she was born, Ida B. Wells once described her childhood with her parents and siblings in Holly Springs, Mississippi as “happy.” But a tragedy would alter the course of Wells’ youth. As a young woman and teacher, she refused to give up her seat on a train car that she was told was reserved white women. That incident launched the young Wells into her first public fight for justice.
Through writing, Ida B. Wells found her “real” self. As she put pen to paper, her words became an important tool to analyze, debate, and persuade readers on the issues of the day, particularly when it came to race and gender. But after the lynching of her close friend in Memphis, Wells found a new kind of power in her pen.

The more I read about Ms. Wells and having 6 books on her, I realize 3 things that frustrate my soul so very much. 1.) How Class played a major role in even in our race. 2.)Sexism played a major part. Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. looked down on her. 3.) Even the Church was scared to fight for freedom and seen Ms. Wells as a troublemaker. When she clearly wanted us to rise up and defend ourselves. Then there was a 4th issue I notice, White Women wanted rights and respect from their men, but they couldn't even put down their racism to include black women equally. Just think if Upper Middle Class Blacls, Other Civil Rights Leaders during that time, the Bkack Church and Women Rights Groups had a backbone and joined Ms. Wells how more advance our race would have been. The total lack of respect she received during the last decade of her life makes me sick. She should be mention along MLK, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks. Because she attributes they all had before all but Harriet Tubman was born. It is a shame she isn't honored. I love this women and everything she stood for. R.I.P. Ms. Ida B. Wells.

We can’t overcome the oppression if we aren’t united, and pushing others beneath us does not help anything. It’s the same battle if white women and black women are beneath men. I give honor to her and all the leaders who stepped out on the front, took the time to really fight for our place in social humanization to exist and to be treated fairly, as we know we will never be treated equally in this free world. Rest in peace all the powerful black leaders thank you for your bravery, your resilience, and vision. Rest to all my brothers who were lynch from the beginning, in this moment I thank God for you all and I will kiss the sky, the ground and the air. I actually grew up in the Ida B Wells projects on 38th and South Parkway which became King Drive in the late 1950s and all of the 1960s. The street behind me was Rhodes Avenue. I remember the Chicago Daily News don't know if it's still up and going. Anyway, this is a large part of my past. My grandmother came to the area in the late 1930s I even had an uncle go to Burke Elementary School and he was much much older than me remember my mother was 40 years older than me. I remember when the worse crime was men that drank wine and would sing on the corners. But sad to say I have learned more about Ida B Wells on here than I ever did in school although I grew up while the last generation of these great people were being laid to rest.

Ida B Wells deserves so much recognition for all that she did and strived to do in her life - beginning at the age of 16, no less, when most of us haven't a clue about life and how to care for ourselves!! Ida was clearly a special human. She believed in the truth - that ALL MEN/WOMEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, regardless of their skin color. Despite all the judgment and set backs due to being black and a woman, she persisted through it all. Ida remained resilient, honest to the core, courageous and humble. I only wish she were alive today, to know that we have the highest respect for her. May she rest in peace.

This was an eye opening documentary, addressing this baneful, exceedingly harmful disease of racial injustice for way too many centuries in America, "the land of the free". This film gave me an insightful look at the strength, determination to right the wrong, to uplift the down trodden black community in America to their rightful place as citizens, to bring this awareness to the masses, black and white, and she did it relentlessly, with determination, courage, both exercised with boldness and oft times, necessary audacity. She was an angel in the midst of her people, which we, as the American nation should have embraced the black race all along, equal to all who dwell in this 'great' country.
