Motoman shhhhhh...I thought this was our secret. I try to daily drive my '73 VW Thing weather permitting as much as I can. Only leaves me stranded when I want it to. Keep the content coming...
So sorry . . . I should not have said anything:)
If you frequently drive a classic car, you’ll enjoy it a lot more than just letting it sit. Another benefit is you’ll likely notice what needs maintenance more quickly.
VERY good point.
I never realised how many others use their classic cars as daily runners until i did the same. The thing that makes it so appealing to me is the character that they are full of. I am yet to find a modern car that feels like it has any character which is a shame.
The main problem with older cars is safety, they’re just not that crash worthy but the coolness factor is there. That VW Squareback brings me back to my childhood days, those things back then were cheap used.
In one way they’re actually more safe, since your car stands out people will pay more attention to you on the road.
I’ve been driving the Lancia Fulvia Zagato downtown Chicago to work couple times a week and also many errands around my house over the last couple months. You only live once and I have fun driving it and people get to see something completely out of the ordinary.
You, sir, are my hero.
Great Video M, have a good friend that daily drive an R107 SL here in the UK which he bought for similar money to my Golf. While it left him stranded on the side of the A1 many times he got out of the car for considerably more than he originally paid for it including maintenance and had so much more fun in the process!
If you have the stomach for the repair bills, those are wonderful. Literally tanks hence their nickname. Nice ones have gone up in price so I would prefer a nice driver Pagoda to a perfect R107.
I daily a 2003 and a 1998. No loss in value anymore. Does that count? :-D By the way, the aircooled VW engines are pretty uncomfortable in the cold season. Your feet get barbecued while the windshield is still foggy etc. Washer fluid is pumped by the spare tire pressure - or, not... But everyone loves you in an old car.
I daily drive a 2013 335i. For the average BMW owner that leases cars you’d think I daily drove a classic 😂
ROTFLMAO!
Great piece of Video! Really appreciated. - I was just irritated by the EU Numberplate with the Netherland EU Signature on it. I understand that someone who did that to put the year and the model of the car, but the Dutch EU Numberplates are actually yellow with black letters. Some useless knowledge - I know
You are on to something here. I've owned a couple of classic cars and still do and all you have said is soo true. My 71 C3 is wonderful in a way that the parts are available, it has nice performance, looks and is reliable. Now I do own a late model Saab that I daily but it is getting to a border of modern classic, at least I think so.
C3 is a GREAT example of doing this.
Have considered this many times but the crash protection afforded me should some texting or just plain stupid driver hit me gives me pause. Twice this week I had to take hard evasive action in my 911. I gave up my 1972 GT6 for just that reason. That SL is one classy car.
There are too many classics from around the world to choose from. It sure stinks not to be Jay Leno! A C2 or C3 Corvette for me. The ultimate would be a Corvette Mako Shark or Manta Ray, but ultra rare parts! Heck, any Vector supercar. Having owned 5 sports coupes prior, a 2012 Mustang GT weekend driver keeps me going for now.
just got a 2006 solstice gxp and repainted, striped and tuned.
best fun car i ever drove (without a trunk).
motoman, i wish you would put forth a list of perhaps the better 20, 25 of the somewhat performance, well-known for service and parts and reliability.
it would help me narrow down my nest car.
looking at wagons
LOVE the Solstice GXP. I owned an 07 Sky Redline and loved it. Good point . . . may do that in a future rant. That said, already did this with Dave Kinney - the founder & Publisher of Hagerty Price Guide. He is the guy that literally writes the book on classic car values. Here is an example but you can find two other episodes where we do the same thing with different time periods. czcams.com/video/4unjW_OvI-4/video.html
Preach it, brother.
I love bonafide classics, I used to dream about owning & dailying a 70 Challenger growing up, but that dream is no longer viable and I moved on.
Enter modern classics, cars I grew up with and fantasized about, they hit the sweet spot for me. As you mentioned, reliable, comfortable, fun to drive and parts availability is there.
As much as I love the E65, for me, I believe the E38 (without Nav.) would be the perfect modern classic daily driver. Elegant timeless design, comfortable, will start everyday and fun to drive. Followed by the W140, late E34 & the V8 W124. That said, the ultimate modern classic is the Maranello 😍.
Modern cars lost me with the obsession with the excessively large grilles, ridiculous screens & all the other "trendy" bits, alongside the overzealous government regulations.
Power is going up, handling is getting better, numbers are better than ever, but I feel like they lost a bit of their soul with all the other stuff thrown into the equation.
I had high hopes when the current TT & R8 came out, I hoped they'll pickup from where the 458 left off and buck the trend of gazillion screens ... Sadly, they were just an anomaly. Even Ferrari is now embracing that nonsense.
Did you see the leaked interior of the upcoming S-class? The screens are ridiculous, it looks like something from Pimp My Ride.
Pardon my rant, I got carried away lol.
Love this series, M. And as always, excellent work.
Edit: on a side note, where does the E30 stand? Bonafide or modern? Now that's a canvas with lots of potential, the sky is the limit with the E30.
70 Challenger? I knew you were an Mopar guy early on but this explains a lot:)
E30 is a GREAT example of this . . . however, they are no longer so cheap.
@@MotoManTV hahaha I blame Vanishing Point for inducting young innocent impressible me into the Mopar religion lol.
Yep, they're no longer considered "beaters" & the Ms already surpassed the $40k mark. Speaking of, did you see the red one currently offered in BAT? Santa Maria Madre De Dios!
I'm totally down for dailying an E30, not as "practical" as an E38, but I'm totally down. I'd love me one with some OEM+ sprinkled goodness and a heart transplant, the purist in me says keep it in the family with an S54, but the hotrodder in me says 392 Hemi lol.
Daily driver 1980 280zx. Weekend drive 1964 1/2 Mustang convertible. One day I will buy a new car.
He’s wearing converse standing around classic cars and an airplane this is truly a man of culture
Motoman, since you're in the south bay, do you take the mk3 to ISP parts in Carson?
Ford Escort mk1 or 2. Parts are pretty available, much like a Mustang but without the fuel bill.
I would totally daily an Alfa Giulia. A 1750 GTV or a 70+ Junior with Alfaholics goodness bits sprinkled here & there would be the sweet spot for me.
I can't believe I completely forgot about Alfa in my original post. I must repent for my sin lol.
I can't believe you forgot about that as well!!!!!!!
@@MotoManTV I kkkkkknnnnoooowwww!
Putting my grandmother and mother into a car would be precarious, to say the least. But, putting my wife and girlfriend in my car? That's out of the question and akin to me committing suicide...
:)
What insurance do I use to drive daily
I’m thinking 65 Riviera Gran Sport.
EXCELLENT choice!
Is your floor polished concrete? Looks good
Yes, sorta. You can have it finished in a variety of colors then it is treated and polished.
How about a 1985 Toyota Celica Supra
Absolutely fell in love with those cars when they came out - however, I couldn't drive back then but it later led me to buy a used A70 with a stick & a sport roof. You can see her here: czcams.com/video/VKfNA_jA4HE/video.html
If I could, I would Daily my 84 50th AE z31 300zx every day (except in the extreme heat) but its not passing smog right now.
LOVE those. Did an episode on a pristine example. czcams.com/video/coJsu4JHhFk/video.html
I am just wondering why that Mercedes Benz SL a NL license plate has?
The owner is originally from the Netherlands.
Because it has no airbags and doesn’t meet updated safety requirements?
The Porsche he mentioned has airbags
Agree....they can still rot covered up in a climate control garage Im a prime example (not by choice). Starting and idling for a few min is not good for it.
THe whole unsafe thing is BS. ANy new car will fold up like cardboard if you hit it with old iron.
When all old cars were thick steel different story.
Why even go outside if you are paranoid? Sitting in a dark garage gives 0 enjoyment of ownership, no memories made. Go use it before the mice do.
People talk about old cars like they are going to explode if you daily them.
NEver owned an EFI car til around 2000, never broke down til after 2000 also.
Nah, man. I’ll daily my mazda3 and visit my mechanic as scheduled.
Drive an old jeep! It has safety features, you cannot go fast for speed to kill you, all the exposed steel bumpers and cages and huge tires definitely protect you 😂
"Why you should daily a Classic Car!"?????
Are you sure you drive them daily ? Why not to talk about REAL problems that face a classic (let's say pre-1985, carb) car in the modern trafic ? And reliability of the car is not an big issue, you learn weak points of the car. The issue is poor maitainance. If it's made by the usual mechanic idiot then you'd better not to use the car.
One thing is correct: you need at least two cars if you daily classics. Even if failures don't happen often there are annoying problems (wipers, lights) that may require taking another car during few days.
FULLY admit that my experience is different than others for no other reason than where I live. Many folks - even non car folks - daily a classic in SoCal because they can get away with it based on weather and the amount of shops around town than professionally keep them on the road without breaking the bank.
@@MotoManTV I'm not saying you should have the same experience as me. I'm saying it'd be useful for people to realise that most of old cars are just not good in the modern trafic, they are not confortable (I said "most of them"). They are not as performant on the road as any modern car. They are not safe, people don't see their turn or stop lights, wipers are not efficient, they don't brake well, overheat, are noisy, steering column and seats are not adjustable, they don't have tons of usb gadgets, and many more. And this is getting worse before 70s. These are small problems that don't matter on a week-end car but that become problems on a daily.
And there are almost NO vids explaining this. There are tons of vids about how old cars are nice and fun and beautiful, how they are "not complicated" because they don't have electronics, or how it's easy to buy bigger brakes or to tune the carb. Nothing about the REAL everyday experience.
