Those silhouettes could have been extracted quickly using Trace Bitmap. I don't find it reliable for complex images with a lot of detail and colours, but for silhouettes it's a lot easier and faster than manually drawing around the shape and clipping. Other than that, thanks for the tutorial. Papercut style can be a fun way to make complex art using easy methods.
The only suggestion is these kind of elements are found in Japanese paintings so those colors would add to the beauty. I will try and share the results.

That is a good tip, trace bitmap is great for cutting silhouettes out of high contrast images - all depends on the source image.
