Life Insurance is a unique industry. How do we analyze the insurance sector?
In this video, we discuss some of the unique features of this industry. These will help us in the analysis of insurance industry. The industry will remain in news as the LIC IPO is soon to hit the street.
Some key points about the industry are
- The Top 5 players have more than 85% market share - creating an oligopoly
- Life Insurance is a Push Product - People do not assess risk well, and so do not proactively go an purchase insurance.
- The gives a big advantage to any company with a Bank Channel - This gives you access to a large Customer base and data, and thus a Cross Selling possibility
- Since Insurance is a Longer duration product, the profits from selling this come later in the lifecycle of the product. Thus it is difficult to compare this industry using traditional metrics.
- We also discuss some key industry Terms - Embedded Value, VNB, APE, Persistency
