Mark Fisher's essay is still important but i don't think he would have enjoyed Russel Brand's turn to online wellness conspiracy guru. The tragedy is that the ship has sailed on class consciousness. Look at how the Working Class vote now, it isn't along class lines. The working class no longer have any pretentions to solidarity, they have been completely sold on the ideology of individualism.

Spot on about Mark Fisher's analysis but how do you square Brand's turn to the right in the last while and marry this with him being a great threat to the establishment? His views and presentation have changed dramatically?

Yeah sure. In 2023 he shifted his show, ‘Stay Free with Russell Brand’ to the right-wing platform, Rumble.
If you look at Brand’s recent output, interviewing Robert F Kennedy Jnr, or Tucker Carlson, or Candace Owens or DeSantis or Jordan Peterson or Ben Shapiro the narrative is relentlessly from hard right-wing libertarians, Conservatives and reactionary forces. There is nothing subversive about any of this.
Giving a platform to these people is not threatening to anyone. His 'turn to the right' has been well documented and observed in real time.
While this is deeply reactionary it’s also highly lucrative. Brand’s income from You Tube went from $750,000 in 2019, £810,000 in 2020, £1 million 2021, $3 million in 2022 to $4 million in 2023. Arguments that Brand is working class, fighting for the wee man, or a maverick outsider will have to content with his mansion his eight real estate properties, and his investment portfolio.

@@handofsutekh How Brand (right now, not decades back when he was stoned) a misogynist? He is a great father to his daughter and shows nothing but respect to his wife. Being pro-Russia is right-wing? This is simply an idiotic statement. I'd say being pro-NATO war on Russia and their sacrifice of Ukraine is a new Euro-fascism. Antivax? So the working people's objection to the most powerful corporate entity, the Big Pharma, force-drugging them (emphasis on *force here) is right-wing? All these things must matter to the real Left---which is not who Mark Fisher attacked. He attacked the turncoats, those who betrayed the Labour since the 70s. Those who had overdosed on Trotsky and went on to serve the Capital.

Great to see this essay getting more traction and a really enlightening (for me) analysis. The Brand we saw on Newsnight torturing Paxman is a distance removed from the show pony he became online though. All his wellness pish and covid tedium. Notwithstanding the accusations from the women on the telly.
Regardless of all that, Mark Fisher is a massive loss.

Great video, with one minor point of disagreement:
Narcissism and cult mentalities are two sides of the same coin, and it is ignorant to say that Christianity "invented" cult systems. This bahaviour has been around since the dawn of time. The gospels describe this mentality as pervading through the Jewish religion at the time of Christ (before Christianity existed), epitomised by the hypocritical religious leaders and the Pharisees. The teachings of Jesus are actually the exact opposite of (and the antidote to) Narcissism, but bad faith actors can enter any organisation of people in order to manipulate, control, and dominate others for their own agendas and power trips. Which is definitely what has happened throughout church history, especially with Roman Catholicism. But genuine Christianity would renounce this behaviour as anathema and anti-Christ - the New Testament contains many warnings against behaviour like this.
