Kim was really young when she did this in '81. Plus, this was New Wave. It was meant to make the viewer/listener uncomfortable. See Kim do "Keep me hanging on" in '86 for a more mature, polished performance. For an in-your-face, sexy performance, see Kim do "Can't get enough of your love" live in Paris in 1990. Mind blowing.
Her brother Ricky wrote this, (and the rest of the songs on her debut album). He was a child star with the hit song ”I Am An Astronaut”, but as a grownup he focussed on songwriting and producing. (He’s in the video by the way playing the keyboards). About Kim’s stern face in this video: It was an early 80s thing, to try and look as deadpan as possible, you can see it in countless music videos from the era. I guess it was a way for young people to come across as way more jaded and cynical - thus experienced, thus cool - than they could possibly have been.
One of the first songs I remember I liked of my own, and recorded from the radio in 1981.. just 9 years old then.. Greetings from Sweden!
Kim Wilde was my teenage crush. I so happy you have reacted to this song Jem, take care.

MORE Kim please!
kim is british
Yes and how she could sing “East California,” with a straight face which isn’t a real US reference. There’s only Southern and Northern CA
Not the girl from full house. She probably wasn't even born when this song came out.
What I like in the song - so much punk :) You need to explore the old real british punk.
*You should check out her 1987 song "You Keep Me Hangin' On".
There a family of music and singers if don’t do good father mother brother great song
