  • Today I’m chatting with ‪@WouterCorduwener‬, a Dutch guy who has conversational ability in 20 to 30 languages. There’s nothing fake here - he’s dedicated his life to getting really good at multiple languages and is a true hyperpolyglot. Now he’ll be the first to admit that he isn’t fluent in all of these languages, but he does have a genuine basic conversational ability in at least 23 languages and more advanced conversational ability (or fluency) in at least 6 languages. He’s a really impressive guy and I hope you enjoy our conversation!
Here’s a list, in order, of the languages he speaks in our interview: English, Mandarin, Italian, Portuguese, French, Thai, German, Korean, Tagalog, Hiligaynon, Dutch, Afrikaans, Spanish, Catalan, Vietnamese, Russian, Swedish, Danish, Jamaican Creole, Buryat, Japanese, and Greek. He also speaks Ukrainian, Hindi, Arabic, Farsi, Indonesian, Hebrew, and Turkish but forgot to speak those here.

Everything else he's spoken online is more like after a bit of intensive training, which he doesn't speak outside of his vids (like french, wolof, Italian, the american language etc). Tbh I have been bilingual (English and Italian) my whole life and the switching to me is very natural. Like the moment anyone speaks to me in English or Italian I can basically instantly reply with no issues or mixing up the languages. Ig it’s down to individual experience because I’m my household my dad only spoke to me in Italian and my mum only in english so for example at the dinner table the switch between languages was and is always continuous. Chinese and English are also two very different language compared to English and Italian but who knows it’s interesting

I very recently started Swedish and my main issue is being able to remember en vs ett (I've gotten so many questions wrong cus I couldn't remember if apelsin and citron are both en or just apelsin...not helped by the fact that I cannot see myself talking about lemons regularly) and how nouns inflect.
Example from earlier today: Tjej, well MT is no good here because it likes to default to Flicka, and I didn't know any site that listed how to say: the plural, the "the" form and the "the" form's plural.
I'm sure there is some logic but I've not picked it up by doing the bare minimum of 2 daily lessons on Duolingo.
Will say though, VERY cool language (And I adore the word for spider, Jag tycker om spindeln.)

It's just natural.... About the plural form(s) we dont use another word prior to the actual word such as (the) girl. We bend the actual word instead. one/En flick(a), two/två flick(or), the/they/them = flick(orna) the girls (thing) flick(ornas)..... man/män/männen,männens, apelsin, apelsinen, apelsinerna, apelsinernas, fisk, fisken, fiskarna, fiskens, fiskarnas etc :D you can find me at discord with the same nickname as here if you want to

I feel like there's a lot of pressure around speaking a different language than your mother tongue cause there will always be someone to judge. Like it's a competition or something. I believe the Danes are like the French of Scandinavia - they elide a lot of consonants.
A Danish friend once told me that Norwegian is probably the best Nordic language to learn, as it is sort of halfway between Danish and Swedish. Swedish may be the hardest one to learn (Icelandic is off the chart - quite similar to old Norse, I believe).

Hi, a Filipino here! We really really appreciated it that you learned and speak Tagalog, however, there's just a bit of correction on the "nice to meet you" phrase. From what I heard, you said "ikinagago ko na makilala ka" (no offense) which means, "it's a stupid of me that I have known you". But I knew, or we knew that you want to say "ikinagagalak kong makilala ka" ( nice to meet you ). I just wanted to clarify that mistake or mispronunciation and as a person who learn other languages, I or we understand that.
    Have a great day!

@shah yeah, while I think it’s really cool that he can converse as much as he can in all these languages, almost all the languages he speaks is with poor grammar and pronunciation. I think it would much more worth while if he worked on those things in the languages he already knows, rather than adding more languages under his belt

An artist and polyglot! A true Renaissance man!
I've learned tiny amounts of several languages (Polish, Dutch, Greek, Irish, Japanese, Hawaiian) and a slightly higher level in a few other languages (Spanish, Portuguese, Italian). It is such a beautiful challenge, and I've been inspired by this conversation to dig deeper, with more consistency, in a couple of those languages to really be able to identify as multilingual!
I tried speaking Dutch in Amsterdam and was sorely disappointed when the person didnt understand me at all and just replied in English 😔😬😆

    • @Dennis-ed4ye
      @Dennis-ed4ye Před 2 lety +1

I don't think they didn't understand you. It's more of a cultural thing to immediately switch to English if someone doesn't comfortably speak Dutch (to the level of native language). For example in the Netherlands I would start my conversation in English if somebody looked like they aren't born here/lived here for many years.

It’s so true what he said about judgment. I’ve been practicing Spanish for a small amount of time now and people are not only encouraging, but are very much happy to hear you trying.
This last weekend I went to Des Moines Iowa to skateboard with friends. I got tacos at a truck and ordered in Spanish and the people were happy and surprised. Then, I went to a skateboard contest and there was an Olympian from Peru there. Peru is the only country I’ve traveled to. We had a brief conversation in Spanish and he was excited and told me so because most people don’t speak Spanish with him, let alone talk about the things they love from his country.
    It was an amazing experience.

Much appreciation for both of you. Admire the dedication, and it's fascinating to watch/listen to.
At times I find myself wondering what the main goal is after watching some of your other video's.
To be honest, sometimes it comes across slightly more about getting an ego boost out of people's reactions than bringing people closer together.
I think people would appreciate it if there's more depth to it, if that makes sense.
Languages are meant to be a way of communication, so it would be nice to hear more than "talk" about "talking".
What actually is it, you desire to communicate about/or for what reason?
Nevertheless, respect for your effort and time.
P.s. Maybe it's just me, but I got distracted by X having difficulties keeping his eyes open the whole time ...
