    Frequently asked questions:
    Q: What is your job?
A: I work as an interpreter of English, Slovak and Mandarin Chinese.
Q: What was the most difficult language you've ever studied?
    A: Mandarin Chinese.
    Q: How old are you?
    A: I'm 34 now. I was 32 in the video.
Q: Which language do you like most?
A: Difficult to say, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be: Hungarian, Russian, Cantonese and Persian.
Q: Which language do you dream in/think in?
A: I think probably those that I use most often: Slovak, English, Mandarin.
Q: When did you start learning foreign languages?/How long did it take you to learn all the languages you speak?
A: I don't think there was a starting moment in my life. Very fortunately I grew up with 2-3 native languages and spoke 5 at an almost native level by the time I was 13 and just continued learning languages here and there as I grew up. It took me my entire life.
Q: Could you give me some tips to learn language XYZ?
A: I have a blog where I wrote probably everything I think about language learning (www.foreverastudent.com). I also made a lot of videos about language learning here on this channel. Feel free to check them out.
Q: How long does it take you to learn a new language?
A: It depends on the language. Also it is difficult to tell what it means to 'learn a language'. To get to a C1 level in Russian it took me about 3 months because Russian is very close my native Slovak language and most Slovaks could do it, to do the same thing in Chinese took me about 7-8 years.
Q: How should I start learning a language?
    A: • How to learn a languag...
    Q: What is your secret?
A: I don't think there is one. Only passion, lots of time spent on practice, good conditions and a bit of talent.
    Q: Where are you from?
A: I was born and lived most of my life in Slovakia.
Q: You made a mistake in the French part. It shouldn't be 'ce video' it should be 'cette video'.
    A: Thank you, I'll remember.
Q: You made a mistake in the Serbian part. It should't be 'kuči' but 'kući'.
A: Thank you. I realized it the moment I said it.
Q: The Spanish part was too short.
A: I'll try to make a video where I speak only Spanish next time.
Q: You don't speak Portuguese, you speak Brazilian. Why did you learn that ugly Brazilian Portuguese and not the real Portuguese from Portugal?
A: I must've gotten about 100 comments like this and worse. I honestly don't understand why all the hate against Brazilian Portuguese from Portugal. I just felt silly writing 'Brazilian' instead of 'Portuguese' especially since as far as I know the official language of Brazil is called Portuguese, not Brazilian. It's like saying I speak 'American' instead of 'English'. But, lesson learned, next time I will proudly say I learned 'Brazilian Portuguese'. I learned Brazilian Portuguese because: I love its sound, wonderful Brazilian smiling people, the country, the music, the nature and because I'd like to live there one day.
Q: You didn't learn Greek! You should be ashamed of yourself.
A: I got about 50 similar comments. I have no intelligent answer for this. People help me out:)
Q: Why didn't you learn Arabic? Armenian? Hindi? Indonesian? European Portuguese? Greek?... I'm dissapointed.
A: I never had a good reason or interest.
Q: Were you ever interested in learning
    Scandinavian languages?
A: Originally no, because I never had a chance or good reasons to learn them, plus it's too cold for me up there, but recently I went to Finland and I read a book by Stieg Larsson, enjoyed both very much, so maybe some time in the future I will.
Q: Great Chinese but you speak with a Taiwanese accent.
A: I lived in Taiwan for 5 years. I'm not doing it on purpose. I don't know how to speak in any other way.
Q: The use of the word 'geil' in the German part was inappropriate/wrong/off.
A: Some people really seem to think it was inappropriate, but some people in the comments don't. I learned German when I was a teenager and didn't use it since. I said the word without thinking too much. It's definitely not that I used it on purpose to sound cool.

Wow, just wow. I am speechless. So if you cannot do it, then no one can, right? If you don't make sense of it, then no one else should be able to?
I learned Italian over 20 years ago and I use it almost NEVER - but I get out of my way to listen to a program in Italian, or watch a movie once in a blue moon ... and guess what? I can still understand it. Certainly, speaking it is not as fluent as if I was immersed in it but ... I am now studying 8 languages (I currently only know 3) and I have no issue adding more info to my brain. And no, I am not a "fluff head" - nobody can say that I have nothing else to occupy my brain with. ;)
Perhaps you should try some nootropics. It sounds to me like your brain is not being optimized appropriately. Best wishes.

Persian here: Wow, I'm really impressed with your Farsi. You had a few pronunciations difficulties, but for someone who hasn't practiced a lot and hasn't even been to Iran, it was very astonishing. Honestly, I think the major issue non-native speakers have with Farsi is the informal (casual) and formal differences. The textbook formula and whatever is taught in classes is primarily in formal Farsi. The informal Farsi is used in day-to-day conversations and seems more fluent and smooth than formal. You , for example, used many informal phrases which are common but then used the formal pronunciation of a word.
All in all, I'm not sure if others have the same feeling, but I feel very happy and proud to know that someone (who is not in the Middle-East) is willing to learn Farsi. It might not seem easy at first, but It has a whole culture behind it and certainly doesn't disappoint.
Thank you for making my day!!

Russians are. I'm not a Russian, but am aware they struggle with English. 99,9% (imho) movies they watch are dubbed in Russian. I see a lot of comments in rutracker[.]org (largest torrent tracker) where they say about movies, tutorials, learning lessons etc.: too shame its not in Russian etc. I understand - they are proud of their language, BUT lazy in language learning. Of course it does not apply to many young people. Even many Russian people who lives here in Latvia for generations, can't put together a simple conversation in Latvian. I speak Russian from 1st grade. Fluent from 5th grade. (now 31 years old). Who disagrees with me is a hypocrite (i mean Russians, whether they are from Russia or Latvia). Вот так вот {Russian}.

You did a great job. My compliments to you. I also have a knack for languages, but growing up in the States, had only English until I went to high school, where I started French. When I got to university, I majored in French, minored in Italian, and took Spanish and Russian, as well as a semester of German. I went to work for Pan American World Airways (aka Pan Am) as a steward in 1979 and got to travel the world. I learned Brazilian Portuguese, which is much more musical and sensual than Continental Portuguese. I love its slang and bossa nova, jazz, & MPB. I also learned airplane Japanese, and had so much fun with passengers from Japan. I later lived in Hawai’i and studied Hawaiian language-a totally different language family.
Learning languages is always worth it.

Stefan Scarlet: "I was expecting greek language how could you ignore greek language, a bit dissapointed :( good job tho"
You know, the video is about two years old and there were about a thousand comments beneath it like yours, but I'll try to answer again. A lot of people asked: Why didn't you learn Greek? Why didn't you learn Arabic? Why didn't you learn Hindi? Why didn't you learn Korean? Why didn't you learn any African language? Why didn't you learn any Malay? Why didn't you learn any Swedish? Why didn't you learn any Albanian? Why didn't you learn any Turkish? One person even called me a Turkish hater, because I don't speak Turkish..
I don't understand these questions, really. I would never ask anyone with an irritated tone: Why didn't you learn any Slovak (my native language)? I think everyone is entitled to learn what they want and I would definitely not be upset if someone wouldn't learn my native language. It's like a football player getting mad at everyone and asking why they don't play football. A lot of Greeks were even insulted that I didn't learn their language too..how can this be? I understand that Ancient Greek is an important language, but so is Sanskrit, Latin or Classical Arabic and I didn't learn those either. I didn't do it intentionally. I just never had the chance, opportunity or time to learn Greek or any of these languages. It actually feels really strange explaining something logical like this. My life evolved in a completely different way. I lived most of my life in Slovakia, two years in the USA, 5 years in Taiwan, 2 years in the Czech republic, most of the languages I learned I had to learn for work, school or for very practical reasons or because of some really strong attachment to the language. Why would I learn Greek? There was nothing disrespectful in my question. I honestly don't know why I should spend another 2-3 years of my life intensively studying Greek when: I don't live in Greece, I have no Greek friends (again, it's nothing intentional, it's just how my life evolved), I don't have plans to live in Greece, I don't work for a Greek company, I am not interested in Greek literature (again, nothing disrespectful), not interested in Greek history, am not particularly interested in understanding the roots of words like "epidermal, encephalon, telephone, chronometer.." and similar words in other European languages and so on. I wrote a similar response about Arabic and some people really got seriously insulted. I wasn't questioning the importance of Arabic at all.. of course it is an important language..I was just trying to explain that it's natural that you don't learn something. It's like me getting mad at you for not being a doctor, or something similar. And... even if Greek was the most important language in the world.. I still think everyone is at their own liberty to decide whether they would like to learn it or not. If Slovak was the most important language in history, I would never get mad, or feel insulted if someone decided not to learn it.

Vladimir Skultety yes you're absolutely right, I wish one day I will know more languages but I don't have much time for practice now, I only speak 3 languages really well (Ukrainian, Russian and English), and I'm learning 3 other languages (French, German and Czech). All I can say it would be very easy to you to learn Ukrainian, if you have ever been interested in it, i personally admitted that both Ukrainian and Russian helped me in learning Czech, but Ukrainian is a bit more similar to it. Also Hungarian and Slovak are popular to learn in a Zakarpattia region of Ukraine, especially near the border.
P.S. For me the easiest language is Belarusian, I've never learned it and still can understand 95% of it.

Hello and thank you for all your comments. I wanted to answer some of the more frequent questions:
    Q: What is your job?
A: I work as an interpreter of English, Slovak and Mandarin Chinese.
Q: What was the most difficult language you've ever studied?
    A: Mandarin Chinese.
    Q: How old are you?
    A: I was 32 in the video, I'm 35 now.
Q: Which language do you like most?
A: Difficult to say, because if I didn't like the languages I speak, I would've never learned them, so I like every language I have studied for this or that reason but if I had to pick a favorite it would be: Hungarian, Russian, Cantonese and Persian.
Q: Which language do you dream in/think in?
A: I don't even know. Probably those that I use most often: Slovak, English, Mandarin.

    • @VladimirSkultetyOfficial
      @VladimirSkultetyOfficial  Před 8 lety +5

Q: When did you start learning foreign languages?/How long did it take you to learn all the languages you speak?
A: I don't think there was a starting moment in my life. I grew up with 2-3 native languages and spoke 5 at an almost native level by the time I was 13 and just continued learning languages here and there as I grew up. As for how long it took me, it took me my entire life.
Q: Could you give me some tips to learn language XYZ?
A: Sure. I have a blog where I wrote probably everything I think about language learning (www.foreverastudent.com). Feel free to check it out. I could write here too but I would only be repeating myself.
      Q: What is your secret?
A: There is no secret, only passion, lots of time spent on practice, good conditions and a bit of talent.

A: I know. I'll make a video where I speak only Spanish next time.
Q: Were you ever interested in learning Scandinavian languages?
A: Originally no, because I never had a chance or good reasons to learn them, plus it's too cold for me up there, but recently I read a book by Stieg Larsson and got a bit interested, so maybe I will.

Q: You don't speak Portuguese, you speak Brazillian. Why did you learn that ugly Brazillian Portuguese and not the real Portuguese from Portugal?
A: I must've gotten about 100 comments like this and worse. I honestly don't understand why all the hate against Brazillian Portuguese from Portugal. I just felt silly writing 'Brazillian' instead of 'Portuguese' especially since as far as I know the official language of Brazil is called Portuguese, not Brazillian. It's like saying I speak 'American' instead of 'English'. But, lesson learned, next time I will proudly say I learned 'Brazillian Portuguese'. I learned Brazillian Portuguese because: I love its sound, wonderful Brazillian smiling people, the country, the music, the nature and because I'd like to live there one day..

+Carlitox b it is, but not this one. I admire his knowledge of languages, but it's really USELESS without rich vocabulary. He knows how to compose sentences so they make sense - grammar, but his vocabulary is poor. But simply, he is not able to speak and communicate such as the guy that the certain language is native to him. He could not communicate in shop, restaurant, conference and on technical level. So this is REALLY USELESS. All he knows is a few (yes, it is a few, because the vocabulary could be really rich compared to his) words and a basics of language which is sentence composing and tenses, and the other grammar thing.

Learning languages takes time. The area between knowing nothing and being 100% fluent is large. He's somewhere in the middle, which is where every fluent person once was. The learning process is NEVER useless.

For me, any foreign people that can communicate in my language earn a lot of my respect because I know how hard it is to learn, and to this dude... Geez what can I say.....you killed it bro, this is sick!! Good job!
