  • Starting my 1988' Citroën Axel under a tough layer of snow (-3°C) after a cold snowy night outside.
It has the 1129 GS/A engine (aircooled).

    Thank you.
When I was child my aunt drove a Citroen GS; the cold start in winter were harder and the warming so hard

Wow - that's a cold start! The last manual choked car I had I would always give her full choke for a few minutes and just lightly rev her if she started to baulk - worked a treat and ran sweet. Try giving her more choke and for longer - should run real nice.

The proffesional way of doing a cold start💪🏼😁

Gosh, when I see that: with warm water on the ice-cold car! You don't do that. You can be happy that the window glasses didn't crack from the unhealthy sudden tension!!!
First, sweep away the snow and remove the ice on the windows with a scraper or de-icer spray from a car dealer. To open the doors better, grease the door rubbers with grease or tallow at the beginning of the cold season, which is also available in car stores. Then they can be opened more easily with a slight pull.
Cold choke engines are basically started as follows: Turn on the ignition, pull the choke all the way, do not move the accelerator pedal, start. This can take some time because the fuel pump first has to pump fuel from the tank into the carburettor. When the engine is running, push the choke in until the engine runs smoothly at a slightly higher speed.
Important for Citroen's air-cooled boxer engines: From 10 degrees Celsius downwards, the radiator guard must be installed for normal driving in town and on country roads. It must then be removed for long motorway journeys. But only before you get on the highway and not before...
I've always driven air-cooled Citroen Boxer engines (in the GS and GSA, Visa 2-cylinder, 2 CV and Ami 6 as well as Oltcit Club - the original for the Axel) for many decades and that's how it always worked. A look at the (hopefully available) operating instructions or a suitable technology book before using a historical old car, can also help, if you know how it works and how it should be used. The old cars are different from today's modern cars in that way, that they require more attention and technical understanding from the driver!!!
I wish you many happy journeys with the Citroen Axel

@ keep it 100 .... It starts but there's no point, you need to pump for quite a while after startup, to get it stable, and then keep your foot on the pedal.
Pulling the choke is easier. It also pulls the throttle a little bit, so that you won't have to keep your foot on the pedal.
      It'll start, sure.👍👍👍👍

I got the same engine on my GS. I'm pretty sure you know that the choke is not a bad idea during the first 3 minutes of cold start. I assume you didn't use it just for the video, right?
I have the Weber carb, and I only saw one of your other vids, and I did notice a distinctive starting difficulty. Might want to consider soldering the wires to the ignition coil, like I did in mine. I made a video about it, if you want to check it out.
I'm telling you, I had the same problem when starting from 4 months stationary or just 2 days, and since I soldered the wires, the engine is a different beast. It doesn't stall when you close the choke, but only after it has warmed up for about 3 minutes.
Now if you start it and get on your way, you can close the choke in just one minute, and the engine doesn't stall.
I also added small springs inside the ignition coil and distributor cable connectors, so that there will always be a reliable connection in the HT side of the system.
I also worked on the fuel delivery system. Changed the rubber hoses with copper and stainless steel, so that there will be no fuel permiation through the rubber. All the line, from the rear fuel filter to the pump and to the carb, is now 99% metal. Only about 15cm of rubber hose, and that's modern heavy duty fuel hose, wrapped with heatshrink tube, so that there won't be any fuel permiation.
Might wanna consider those ideas, to make that Axel of yours a bit more reliable, even at extreme temperatures.
    Cheers.

Thanks for your comment Sir! The car started the day before the video, that's why the first start looks almost good, as there was already some fuel remaining. I think I tried to "play" with the right choke, trying to find the right air/fuel mix, in order not to drown the engine. This was my very first start in these conditions, I guess I'll learn from this now. I've watched your ignition coil tutorial, the English version is impressive and well-explained, thank you for having done that, it should give me an idea now. I'm considering your comment, thanksfor the tip and help! If I need to work on my ignition coil, I'll remember your comment & video.
      Best regards,
      Axel

@@citroenaxel1988 ...Glad to help good buddy. These engines are quite reliable, but due to lack of knowledge from local mechanics, they were turned to garbage, and many owners were discuraged, and got rid of the cars alltogether.
Luckily I didn't get rid of mine, and I came up with some interesting ideas to make the engine a tad more reliable. And of course, the hydraulics too. Another long story.
Keep it good and it'll be fine. And keep those videos comming whenever you can.

@@citroenaxel1988 .....well I had forgotten about this post, it's been a year now and I eventualy found that the black ignition coil I show in my video was indeed faulty. I replaced it with a square one from a VW Golf Mk3 (also made a video about that) and put in a new ignition module and problem solved. I did keep the old ignition module and another known good coil for backup. Now it runs even better. 👍👍👍👍

Unfortunately no. That is just some "CITROËN" plastic writing on a dark font because this is the cheapest version of the car. Higher versions had a revmeter replacing this writing.
