    have a G-Star wraith and it's amazing, grippy and durable, flies great, from a slight hyzer release I get it to flip up nicely, then it rides on a slight anhyzer before it hyzers out at the end... by far my go-to driver...

  • @phillipsanchez4192
    @phillipsanchez4192 Před 2 lety +4

    This is a great video. Thanks. I am still working on arm speed and am definitely still forehand dominant in my play as a lefty. I push 270s to 290s on my backhand, and I still struggle putting all the pieces together smoothly to get 300+ plus distance with any kind of regularity on my backhand.
    There have been rare occasions on my forehand when I have gotten some discs (usually overstable with a slight anhyser) to carry 320+. This has only ever happened in practice and it is usually anyone's guess which direction the disc is going to take after release.
    I play mostly on somewhat shorter courses, so my go-to disc for these situations is the my Wraith at 170 grams. It is easily my most trusted disc for all the reasons you mention. On a hunch I bought a 160 gram Lat. 64 Jade last summer before I flew overseas where I work, and I have been astonished at how far I can throw this disc. I hadn't thought of myself as an overly light disc thrower, but this disc carries wonderfully for me on forehand and is decent on my backhand. I have better control with it as well. The main issue is wind. If it is gusty, the disc gets affected much more than my trusty Wraith.
    I only have the Wraiths in my bag in Star plastic, so I am really curious what the Halo might be like.
    Anyway, thanks for a great video.

    Fantastic video! I really like this analysis. I currently am bagging 2 Wraiths and 4 Destroyers, and all of them get a TON of mileage. I am very similar to you, where I tend to stick to my Destroyers for forehands. For me, I don't notice as much of a difference in flight, I tend to get more natural turn out of my Star Wraith and I get more glide & stability out of my Halo Wraith (although 1 of my Destroyers is about the same in stability). But the differences are pretty marginal. For me, it's 100% feel. I generally prefer the comfort of Destroyers to Wraiths (I have smallish palms but long fingers), especially on forehand throws. But due to my backhand being weaker and less consistent than my forehand, I usually always reach for the Wraith or another disc for a backhand distance drive. Overall though, if I was stuck with only 1 of them I doubt my play would change too much. From the experience I have forehanding both my Wraiths, I tend to get less distance, so that could come into play I suppose. It's pretty marginal though.

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  Před 3 lety +1

      Man it’s like we are twins lol. Wraiths I use pretty much for backhands because of their natural turn, and destroyers for forehands because they get more distance and can take the torque! They definitely compliment each other well 👍👌

  • @ClearAlera
    @ClearAlera Před 2 lety +1

    What you said at the end about plastic type is really important. My favorite driver used to be a beat-in destroyer in one of the cheaper plastics. I could reliably laser it down long tunnels and even get a little bit of turn on it both forehand and backhand. When I lost that one, I replaced it with a star plastic destroyer thinking that it was a good investment for durability's sake. It turned out to be a big mistake - it's a constant struggle to even get that one to stay flat for a little bit, and turning it is out of the question with my arm speed. I now rely on my Nuke SS to do what my old destroyer used to be able to do, and only pull out the star destroyer when I have wind to contend with. TL;DR - plastic type is important.

    • @JustDisc

Thought about making the move to destroyer and this video convinced me not to do so. I need some overstable/wind drivers and it won't fit the bill. Also, the wraith is awesome. a good D plastic beat in experience for beginners too.

It's not the disc it once was, but I just bought a Champion Wraith at 170g. I sure hope it flies even better than my old DX Wraith. I happened to pick up a used Blizzard Destroyer, 148g at league today. It will be interesting to throw them side by side. I suspect they will be similar.

    A friend of mine invited me to try out disc golf back in 2009. We met while playing ultimate frisbee at a local park. He gave me my first disc and told me what to look for when I went to buy a few more. The disc he gave me was a dx wraith that was lightly used. It ended up being a great disc for me off the tee about a month into playing. I wish I still had my original disc, but it ended up in a water hazard that was too deep for recovery. I still bag a wraith to this day for the sentimental value.

    G-star Wraith and Enigma fly very similar. Then the Wave seemed like a slightly more understable wraith. And then the Devy seemed to slide in right in between the G-star wraith and the Halo wraith.
    As someone who has yet to ace (I keep chaining out), one of the closest I have gotten in a tournament is with that halo wraith. I was throwing into a headwind onto an island hole. The spotter said that whoever threw the wraith was the closest to acing that she has seen yet. I got lucky too. It was touching OB but was still in. I sunk the 30 foot putt. Oh ya!

    I have a beat in champion destroyer that I used to use exclusively for forehand shots, but now I'll use it for backhand as well. I find that the valkyrie gets me a little more distance typically than the destroyer. What is your thoughts on the beast vs the wraith vs valkyrie? Any idea which one would typically get best distance? I can get maybe 420 ft on my best back hand drives, but typically in the 350+ range.

    • @JustDisc
      @JustDisc  Před 3 lety +1

      The Wraith is suppose to give the most overall distance, considering it’s an 11 speed and the others are a 10 and a 9.
      For you, it all depends on how you throw. If your telling me you get more distance with the Valkyrie, you could probably throw the beast, which is a great disc. It also depends on the weight and plastic you like to use. For instance you could get the wraith, but you would probably need to get it in a lighter weight, like 168. And if you get it in a softer plastic, like the dx, it will be easier to throw than something like the champion.

      Hey MLG, I apologize for getting back to you so late. Honestly, if you are new, I would just stick to the Enigma and Destroyer until you learn to throw them well. @@JustDisc for sure and honestly when I'm working with my friends if you can't get a full flight out of your max distance driver it is too much disc for your arm. So many people think that higher speed discs will get your a further drive and will fly faster, which is true to a point but what that number really means is how hard/fast you have to throw that disc to get the disc to fly like the noted flight numbers. I personally can full flight a destroyer and throw close to 500ft but most of my friends struggle to throw over 350 and giving them slower discs or less stable discs like a Valkyrie, Katana or Shryke have really helped their game and added distance.

I can get the Wraith to flex out whereas when I throw a Mako3 (which everyone says is a super easy disc for learning DG) I think I might be over throwing it. Wraith is my go to driver, usually have 3-4 rotating. Also like having a range of weights on them, the 160g is more like a -2 for me compared to my 175g, which I use for stronger headwinds.

      Not being able to throw the Destroyer properly usually from a lack of speed or form. Don't be discouraged by this, as it's not a disc most players should use. Or if a wraith is too strong go to an orc. I loved my super beat in Red Champion Orc. If that’s too strong go to an Eagle

      For sure! Orc and Eagle are great replacement discs if speed is an issue

    Hell Guthrie throws his wraith for distance shots same with Ricky

      That's right! It's just an easier disc to do things with. And on those days where you might be lacking the snap and power for your Destroyer, the Wraith always has your back!

    most players should not throw over a 7 speed. if you can not throw a 7 speed 350 feet or further, you have no business throwing a faster disc, in fact it might hinder your game.

    You can get the same result by just getting a slightly lighter Destroyer.
