    (80/20) (street/offroad)= 80%of the tire is worthless off road and 20% worthless on the highway.

    I've riden my rear 705 on a bunch of gravel last season and never had a problem with it. Performed better than my skill level.. My favorite thing about the tire was fish tailing off the line and running through the gears until it would grip.

    Don't think of it in terms of I spend 90% of my time on the road therefore I need 90/10 tires. Think of it in terms of capability vs comfort. I rode Dunlop d606s on my klr650 and they rocked off road, tones of capability. The sacrifice was that they were louder on the road and my stopping distance was a bit longer, but they were perfectly fine on the road. I would say always bias towards capability offroad over comfort on road. You will get used to whatever tires you have on road.

    I went in to the local Honda Husky dealer last week to get this protectant that they sell and I told the guy that I bought a KLR so we talked. He actually didn't bash the KLR but he did tell me something that kinda blew me away as we got to tires. He can't wait to wear through the TKC 80s on his new Husky. I said that I'd heard nothing but good stuff about them. The guy says they are great until you hit the muck, he has always ran the Dunlop 606. I'm going to give them a try.

    It depends on what kind of off-roading you do. You can ride on the road with a knobby off-road tire, sure you can’t corner as fast. But you can’t off-road on a street tire. Think of 90/10 as difficulty level for off-road. Hardpack dirt, maybe backroads is 90/10. If you are going through mud, climbing ditches, jumping logs you are a 10/90 rider.

    I bought my KLR in 2013, after many tires tried ,my favorite has been the Kenda 270 . Cheap ,wear well,and good off road.

      yup they burn up quick but im on my 3rd set. they dig! sand mud, gravel, clay, they dig.

    Practice makes perfect man. The last two years I ran Kenda K761. Right now I have done some light gravel and not much off road. I may change to another brand next season. But will see what I can do with what I got so far.

      That's what I'm trying on my new to me 2015 klr 650 next. I have it on order. Has a mefo explorer on back, and can't seem to get those anymore. The front tire whatever it is, is shot. So the e07 is on order. Now I'm wondering should I have ordered the e07+. I'm hearing they do better on wet pavement.

    80 on road 20 Offroad means your tire is 80% efficient on road and when you’re Offroad it’s only 20% efficient lol

      I'm thinking the percentages are more about how well they do on any surface. like an 80/20 works 80% as well as a full street tire on pavement and 20% as well as a full off road tire and a 50/50 tire works half as well as a full off or full on road tire if that makes sence lol. having said that, I love my TKC 80's for both :)

    I have Dunlop 606 scares as hell on pavement but great in dirt. That meta E607 I’ve heard is true 50/50 it looks it to. It has great reviews

    Have you looked at the MotoZ Tractionators. Have them on my Africa Twin. Good on the road and Bloody brilliant for the 2% you need in the Ruff Stuff..

    100% with you on the tyres, 80/20 are in my book just road tyres with a little bit bigger grove between the tread . ok if doing some gravel roads in the dry but crap at anything a bit more challenging.
    I like to have good grip on road and in the bush (mud, sand and loose rock)
    Love the D606 tyres on my DR650 and BMW f650gs.
    If i have to replace then more often than some other tyre so be it (want grip more than mileage )
    ride safe mate :)

    I got the tusk tires for the KLR. They are pretty aggressive and scare me on the street. They feel loose.

    I'm running the Bridgestone rear trail wing 22 130/80-17 I think it's great what a difference on road real smooth , off road there is still good grip. I'm at 7200 miles now I need a front tire for next season and I'm thinking of the Bridgestone TW41 trail wing tire 90/90-21

    Have you tried adjusting air pressure? A lot of guys run under 20 psi off road. This reduction makes a huge difference in gravel and on rocks, just go too low or you'll risk pinch flats.

    Check out the Shinko 804/805, I had them on my KLR when I sold it. I put over 12000km on them and I had to change the front, they are great on the hwy, the road, off road and cheap to boot. Worth checking them out if you want to save some money. I've sold my KLR and deciding between an Africa Twin or yamahafjr1300es. Great videos, I look forward to the next.

    I put a lot of research and thought into tires. The stock tires were terrifying off road. Gravel was definitely no bueno. At the end I came up with the same concept as you. When I'm off road I want good off road tires and handling. When i'm on road I want a good ride. So after 800 miles on the odometer, I put on a set of Metzler Karoo 3's. Surprisingly (despite their aggressive tread pattern) , they are awesome on the pavement and light years better off road than the stock tires. I'm sure the longevity is considerably less than an 80/20 tire. But the piece of mind is worth it. The price was decent so it will be an experiment. Eventually i'd like to try a set of TKC 80's. Those tires probably have crossed the world more than any other tire.

      Did you change out your own tire? I did. It was like wrestling an alligator. It took every muscle in my body to get the back tire on the rim. I'm scared of getting a flat. It will definitely be a major speed bump in my day when that happens. At least I've done it once.

    I got rid of my 705s because they were scary in the rain and did not like them on the road. I replaced them with Avon Trek Riders. Much better on the highway and was able to grab sand. The problem is that they are too wide and rubbed a groove in my chain guard.
    I have heard great things about Anakee Wilds. They are supposedly amazing on the dirt, and okay on road.

    An other thing you might want to do is get a cheap used wr250r or klx250 and spend more time on the dirt and you will learn how to ride the dirt better. Dirt is like riding on grease you will learn how to push your tires to the limit and its fun. But you need a lighter bike.

    We are all waiting for a japan made drz400 like bike with fuel injection 6speed and 280lb wet and that will be the perfect dual sport, its light and the 50/50 tires will last a lot longer on the pavement, and be great off road or even a wr300r like bike 280lb wet

    That's a good point. Ratio kind of needs the additional consideration of quality of each, not just quantity.
    I go knobbies that are soft and stick like glue. So they work well on both. Longevity comes second to safety and working on your skills and confidence.

    I put Shinko E705 on the front and back of my KLR650 after I wore out the Pirelli Scorpion Trails. Massive difference. So much better on dirt and gravel. The thing about gravel is that the size of the gravel is different depending on a few things (including the quarry that supplied it). If a gravel road has been repaired the gravel might be different so you have to be careful. I find that the traction is much better since buying the E705 and therefore safer. Still no good in mud but I am happy with the tyres everywhere else. The best tip with tyres that I can give you is always match the front & back tyre. If you had a Shinko E705 on the front you get all of the benefits of their profile and tread design. If that means a front tyre is replaced with some tread remaining then tough, but worth the money.

    Oh come on Scratch, why not take a trip to Colorado with the KLR. I haven't even got my bike yet, and want to take on Black Bear Pass. If you change your mind about it, look me up. I get my KLR next weekend, and looking forward to some epic adventures (probably 98% commuting as well). Don't let the dreams pass you by.

    Mitas E07 Dakar is my tire for the Africa Twin. Excellent road and cornering manners. Excellent with and gravel, dirt, sand, mud. I commute 200 miles/week on my bike and now have 10k on the rear with another 2k-3k left looking at wear bars. I have gravel starting at the end of my block so I'm on it often two up. I dont care to experiment anymore!

      @@ScratchBabble my buddies have used heidaneau which last long but square off making them look like truck tires. The mitas e07 has kept a nice round profile. They do take an adjustment when new as they lean much faster than most are ready for. At first it feels as if you will go down so if you try them keep that in mind.

    Haven't had my klr long but I'm currently running the Dunlop 850's..these have a reasonably aggressive tread which so far have felt fine off road and surprisingly excellent on twisty tarmac. Have a set of 606's for spares.

    Hey Scratch, Great observations.
    Best explanation of tire numbers so far is that they are not referring to the time of use, but the riding capacity of the tires. A road tire is 100% capable on the road, and a true dirt knobby can be ridden to 100% capacity in the dirt.
    As a new rider, I'm not riding in either environment at 100% capacity. So either tire is a waste for me. I think your conclusion is correct for a new rider. A 50/50 or 60/40 is probably the best compromise because we aren't pushing the tires to full capacity on either surface anyways, so we're not going to reach the limit of the tire in any circumstance. Or in other words, it's won't be the tire that's holding me back on road or off. ;)

    Same story with my KLR. 3,000 miles and the rear knobby that was stock wore down. I picked a Heidenau k60 simply because of what style of riding I do. However, I still have the stock knobby up front and I will most likely run a knobby there for a little support off road.

      klr does fine off road, i jump mine, hill climb, sand, clay. i do alot of maint on it too! 3rd set of fork seals, 1 radiator, 1 rear shock replacement, 4 sets of wheel bearings, 2 countershaft seals. it can do it you just cant be a pussy about it

    Reality is, put a 80/20 on a motocross bike it’s going to be squirrelly just like is on the klr. Sure the mx bike is lighter so it won’t be AS bad but if you want good dirt that hooks up, gotta have knobs.

    I bought a dual sport bike, so I bought 50/50 tires because that is what the bike is designed to do. I can't do everything a little dirt bike can do off road. But, I don't do what they do; I chug around off road. I can't do everything the big sport bikes do on road. But, I don't do what they do on road; I toodle around town no problem and I get passed a lot on the highway. I drive with my limits. Sometimes I go around things and sometimes I take the alternative routes.

    i put the shinko 705 on last year and i ride loose gravel roads all the time .they ride well for me and i have a lot more confidence on pavement as well

    I have used Shinko 244 for 3 years . They are a 50/50 tire . This year a have changed to the shinko 700 . They are more of a 60/40 . They ride better on road and seem to be ok for light off road . I have not taken them to far off road yet .

      Shinko 244s are my favorite hands down. The way the knobs "give" into the road and squish reminds me of using motocross tires on the road, but there's a lot of traction and grip even in wet conditions.

    I'm going back to stock. They're cheap and while I do like the Shinko 705's they are very difficult to remove. The stock tires were very each to remove but the the 705's were a nightmare to break free.

    Never had any trouble with Annakee 3's for 90 % street use and a tiny ammount of off road use.
    I ran through 2 sets in 40,ooo kms no issues .
    I have recently switched to Annkee Adventures 80 % Road and 20 % dirt I know they'll do the extra dirt roads and trails I want to tackle.
    But face it your not goung to be Happy with what anyone else tells you to run.
    Read the tire tread it's self ......
    The Annakee 3 looks like a Street tire and it really holds the Twisty roads great.
    They did the little ammount of dirt I wanted.
    Recently switching to the Annakee Adventures and they are Great on the Road and I can see they will do the maintained dirt roads I can run.
    People should give them a look .
    Also add a Fork Brace to the front forks.
    Best money spent .
    You can buy cheap knobbys after getting to a destination even If you really want to rut it up .

    Liked my shinko 704-705s. Cheap n good on road, not a serious off road by any means! But the 804 n 805s, much better without the loss of on road capabilities! You wouldnt think so by looking at them that they would be at all but good on road!

    Had a good chuckle at the poke for those of us in the great white north. Got my KLR in June and this is the first time in 20 years that I've had to store a bike for the winter and it hurts. I've got a Kenda on the back (seems good, came with the bike) and I think I might try the TKC 80 next as well. Enjoy the 'winter' riding. ;-)

      Scratch Babble I feel your pain in the sand. I've eaten my heart in the loose stuff too many times to count. I'd like to blame it on weight and tires, but it's more likely skill level. I would like to come as far south as the TAT to at least try a section of it.

    Super disappointed with the Shinzo 705s. They came with the bike so I didn’t pay for them. The Mitas E07 is the way to go.

    Poor Mason!!!! Lol just think of the number is how many points out of 100 you would rate that tire and it’s perspective usage 80% out of 100 on the road and when you take it off road it’s 20 out of 100 or two out of 10 which generally means crap!!!

    I just put the Hideneau K60 on the rear. I went with the 140 as well. You should give it a look. I had the shinko 705 on the rear..it was just ok.

      If I did more off road I would consider that tire as well, but I'm like you and I do mostly street with some off road. Which is exactly why I went with the hideneau k60/140. Now ive only put 30 miles on the tire but I'm loving it so far!

    I went to Michelin Awake Wild after the oem and I like them a lot more then the klr oem. Yes louder and not a whole lot more wear but great traction on and off road and I ride atv trails with a lot of shale rock gravel and mud road. But no expert on tires I ve only tried the Michelin.

    I currently have Shinko 700's on my klr 250. They perform how I like on the road. I've had them in the rain, and even over 90mph. Surprising how fast that 250 can be on level ground with a bit of tail wind. The problem for me is when I hit a gravel road. The front tire is horrible. I get it, it's gravel. I can jump on my son's dirt bike and it feels just fine in the gravel. So I need to find a ride that can still cruise on the highway at decent speed, and can go in the loose stuff without feeling like I'm riding on ice. It just feels like the front end is going to go out from under me at any moment and I have to slow down more than I care to. So at some point I'm replacing the 700's with 244's. Some people love them, some complain that they get too much head shake at highway speed. So I'm going to try them. If they don't work for me at least they were cheap.

      Hey I was just looking at the shinko 700s I have a heavily modified and almost restored 1987 XL 600r Honda.. put a ton of money into it and I only really want to buy one set of tires. Were you happy with the 244s or the 700s I was looking at the 700s personally. This is kind of a street bike that occasionally will go off-road. I can't scratch up the frame or plastics too much .everything is new( at least for now LOL) . Most all the guys that have dual sports around me Ride 244s

      I have 244s which are 50\50 and they do very well off road. On road they are OK.
      I do go about 50\50 though. I hit the secondary roads as often as I can.

    I am with you 100%. Right now I'm leaning towards Shenko 244s. I believe I had Kenda Big Blocks on my last KLR and small knobs at different times. In rain on road I felt like a fat man on ice with the Big Blocks.
    My current 2018 KLR came with Mitas MC24 invaders which is basically a highend Shenko 705. When I wear them out I will probably buy Shenko 244s. In Florida sand is everywhere, so I need a tire that gives a low skill offroad rider like myself as much advantage as I can get without ruining onroad performance.
    I will say the Mitas tires are very good at highway speeds. I can cruise 85mph-90mph on my KLR. The fork has a brace, the fender is after market and there are other suspension mods.
    But, who wants to run on the Interstate all day? Cross country on US highways and back roads for 2-4 hours per day then dirt roads for 30min to 2hrs is enjoyment.

    Good video with an important message. 80/20 tires are not going to be good off-road tires magically for 20% of the time. When I had my KLR650, I ran Shinko 705s for a short while. I live on a dirt road and the 705s didn’t handle deep sand to my liking. I went with Shinko 700s and they worked fine for my riding (90/10) and handled the sand better than the 705s.

      Run shiko704 705s and thought they were the shit! Dont remember what they were, but years ago i put a more dirt type knobby on klr and what a mistake! Terrible on rode and have steered away from the knobby looking tires, since mainly on road. So, got a hell of a deal on shinko 804 805s and was leary but amazing tire!!!! I finally after 9 years found the best tire for me, 804 805s!

    I have the Shinko 705 on my KLR and that front tire does feel like you are on ice if you go into the mud or sand. Completely squirrelly!! That tire is rated 80/20 but not good off road at all.
    Great street tire!! I am going to try the Shinko 804/805 I'm sorry I missed it in your video did you but new tires on yet? Witch Shinko did you buy?

    I've barely got 1000 miles on my KLR and I've looked at tires already. I've not taken it off pavement yet (well, my driveway is gravel). I've some SW-Motech crashbars in the mail and then I'll be offroad ready. I figured that I would find the gnarliest offroad tire that was street legal and slap them on the bike....like you, not a lot of offroad experience, so I want some ice-spikes on my tires. Not worried about road noise at all. But,...I would like a tire that will last more than a few hundred miles.

    one other thing, we all run 9 to 10lb air off road with 50/50 tires and 20lb on road. but we use rim locks and 280lb dual sport bikes. faster speed mx guys run 11lb

    Scratch, I am like you, I ride 95% on rode. The KLR is just getting to be a pain in the ass anymore. I am not buying tires every 3500 miles and, the knobbies just don't stop / corner on the street worth a hoot.

      Ricochet I'm. Not giving up yet! By God there is a lot of off road around here but it's 80% sand. This is the year I figure it out! Or Jack myself up trying! Swapping to the Shinko 805. Have had several KLR guys that I k own swear they are good on pavement. We'll see

    Ohhhh the great tire debate. I just keep on mixing different tires up and haven't found the match yet. I'm probably in my best spot right now with a d606 up front and the e804 in the back. I get into some mud and hate when the front slides out from under me and I eat it. I think my next will be a set of motoz tractionators. Remember air pressure has a lot to do with it too. When I picked my bike up from the dealer there was over 30 psi front and back and I nearly killed myself on some gravel before I got home. I would say there is a set psi but it differs based on tires and weight of loaded bike. All of that to say good luck lol

    You are not going to find a good dual dirt tire that is going to last. Your best bet is get a second set of rims and put kenda 90/100 washougl front and kenda 270 rear best set I've used so far both are dot and I've even race that setup on harescramble rode a lot of rode miles.

    I have 90/10 tyres on mine and ride them on gravel roads (XSR900 and DR650SE). I have no choice. You get used to the way they handle and deal with it. Suspension setup is more important. You may have the best tyres and poor suspension setup makes the bike handle like a pig.

      @@ScratchBabble I been getting brake pads from Amazon but don't buy the cheap shit they will shred in one ride no kidding. Ive used a few different tires but now I have a Pirelli MT 43 on front and a Dunlop Trail max on rear I was getting deals on MT 90s Ive used a few of them but they wear fast to me I dont really like them but the prices was low If they made a real 17 inch trials tire thats all I would run they are very good.

    Do you ever stand up off road? I am 60 yo with minimal off road experience. Cant believe how much safer i feel even on the stock road tyres. Sand still scares me though. Ride a v strom 650 140 km a day. Just got 16k km on the back tyre. Thinking anakee wild or mitas E07.

      Honestly I've not been off road a lot because of the sand you mentioned is all over down here. However I am trying to get comfortable standing as I'm going to tackle the sand head on this year! I'm looking at the Tkc 80 as my compromise tire but the guys who ride sand regularly around here all use Dunlop D606. I do more road miles than they do that's why I'm looking at the Continentals. I'm 62 for one more month!

      The shinko 700 is a good gravel tire for the rear...and You need to be standing on the Pegs.. and the speed of the bike needs to be at a point that gyroscopic stability is your friend....🏍️💨

    you said it before, these KLRs are to heavy to take off road! get street tires and stay away from dirt. and no tire can handle small rocks. ride safe.
