Amy Chua is brilliant. What she presents may make us uncomfortable, but do we want a blurred vision of what's happening in the world of politics? This video was made before the "Tiger Mom" controversy. Indeed, she is also attractive....I guess that's too much for some guys to handle, judging from the comments!

Hmmm... I got into MIT and am going to Stanford Business School. My father is a 1st generation immigrant from India. But I seem to have broken all of Dr. Chua's rules- I had playdates, sleepovers, was in many school plays, played the drums (not the piano or violin), complained a decent amount (always had to argue my case - I think this was a good thing), and I am now an aspiring entrepreneur and nearly won the Rhodes.
Do we need to be strict? No. Children can be driven regardless.

I like this women. She doesn't worry about political correctness in her discussions of parenting or her scholarship. Her intellectual honesty is refreshing. It's too bad that it took media attention of her less important , albeit fascinating, parenting book to help me discover this much more weighty work and its serious implications for our country and the world. This is the book I am going to load on to my Kindle.

Amy Chua is a freakin' BOSS. Her pattern interpretation of minority market dominance within democracy with a poorer majority population is really interesting and I didn't realize that the ethnic patterns throughout history. Perceptive and thoughtful way to transcend conventional economics in SE Asia with over-night democratization.

Professor Chua's discussion was fascinating! I had no idea of the market dominance of minorities in Non-Western Countries. The Chinese are a tiny minority of the population in The Philippines (only 1 percent). But they control at least 60 percent of the Private Economy, (4 Major Airlines, Banks, all Conglomerates). No wonder they're hated by the indigenous majority in the country. I guess regardless of race, people just won't be decent to each other, when it comes to the agreement called money!

The Chinese culture put a lot of importance in a strong education and getting good grades. It does not surprise that their economy is doing so well.
Yet in America we also value creativity, innovation and the individual that is self made like Oprah, Obama, Bill Gate and others.

Lets go beyond market capitalism and social democracy, is there a one size fits all? I like black, you like brown, we happen to live in the same neighbor so what gives, the power of money, tradition, or our acceptance of others preferences. if we are not physically harmed how about we continue looking at our art but take a quick minute to look at theirs, there has to be a bridge that allows for slow and hard earned/learned comprise/enlightment. Having said that, I agree with you the way the Chinese raise their children is a different method than we do here in America, but I am not the one to decide which method is better. It is just a reflection of a different culture, class and history.
In addition, if you look at the Chinese students test scores in SAT, their methods have worked for them, so why change.

We should be seeing a wider range of I/R relationships in NYC, but we do not. Just like the rest of the world, it's the same tired racial stereotypes being played out. AF/WM relationships are without question the most common here. NYC may be diverse but that doesn't mean we don't fall for stereotypes.

Instead, she seems to question the validity of "giving" the savages the gift of democracy without first attenuating it to the incumbent power structure.

Mrs Amy, You must be happy about the way you raised your children, without their opinion, while the other Kids do things that Kids do, they are being exploded for you trying to convert them into something that you want far away of what they are. I want to be there when they realize that you just made them what you want only for filling your pride. When they needed company you made them to play piano with no rest they did not cry because they thought you were going to punish them.
