@@jordandangelo180 I'm so glad I'm not alone on this. I dont know what happened to this John. It seemed that during this time, he was really maturing. However, it seems like after Continuum was incredibly successful and it was time to make a new album, he started to change. He focused less on music and more on trivial/distracting things (sex, money, drugs, media) that were going to inevitably hurt him. Furthermore, I feel like you can see this from how the messages of his songs changed (Continuum vs Battle Studies and beyond) and I don't get it. Why would he stop making soul inspired music? This music touches the soul and he already explained how Pop doesnt really do that. Why wouldn't he just keep make blues music? Continuum, Try, and Where the Light is all fall in the best albums category because of the music. They had the most beautiful messages and best soulful music. This music is what he is the most known for. Why would he change? I think he had to have gone through some bad things....
@@itsamberelise853 Well, money changes people. Fame changes people. Add them together and you have a potential recipe for disaster. Enough money and fame can take the most innocent and wholesome, grounded in reality person and turn them into somebody they swore they would or could never become. I don’t think John is a bad guy at all but he’s definitely changed and all the fame and ego, there is no going back to this John here. I think that’s the reason why we haven’t heard anything like Room For Squares, Battle Studies or Continuum in a long time. I think for the first few albums, John was hyper focused on songwriting and making a name for himself as an artist and as a well respected guitarist as well. He achieved all of that in spades. So, where do you go from there? There aren’t many options. You can continue to go up and write in sprites hit songs, which seems to be very hard for even the best of artists or bands to do after a decade or so, or you can become a celebrity and use your celebrity to stay relevant by playing concerts of your hit songs or making appearances with other groups ex. Dead & Company....all great stuff but not the same as the hungry artist who is out there trying to prove himself. Certain people never lose that fire but they are rare. John still loves guitar gear and Dumble amps which is cool to me but I doubt the early John Mayer we are referring to was more interested in Dumbles and making $6,000.00 amp deals with PRS than he was with writing great songs, all on which same the same Martin acoustic guitar and Fender Strat or 2. I’m not saying he’s more into gear than music, I’m just saying he’s being trendy as opposed to settings trends because we all know if anyone was a trend setter in the songwriting and guitar world in the 2000’s, it was John Mayer. He made the TS-10 popular, made envelope filter tones popular, made guitar playing bigger than its been in decades. Everyone knows or tries to play Gravity or Slow Dancing.
the most genuine singer songwriter. honestly, there isn't anyone out there like him anymore. i just love everything he has to say about music in the end of this video. this is what all music should sound like. enough with this stupid pop crap. john mayer is so completey under appreciated in this music society. i can't wait until everyone starts to see him as a legend 20 to 40 yeas from now. i just love him..omg
I really like it too, especially Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967, it´s such a chill record, you can just sit back and enjoy the whole record over and over again :D
Hendrix 1968, SRV 1988, John Mayer 2008. All the other guys JM mentions in this are just epic blues players, they weren't true leading edge pioneers of electric guitar. Get what I'm sayin'? Particularly Jimi & now JM. This man is truly gifted. How his gift has developed over the last 5 yr is just a pleasure to experience. Are you experienced? I am!
I never saw this interview before, late but a great find. I wish we had more singers like him and he is absolutely right about timeless music tho, he is the proof.
@TheLonesomeChef I think one's coming. I went to see pino at ronnie scotts in london, and he said he's got to fly straight back to L.A to record with John.
9:28 I also enjoy things that glow blue. If I get a new pedal for my pedalboard and the light on the pedal is blue, it makes me like the pedal even more. My most recent of those pedals is the MXR carbon copy. If you share this interest, and play guitar. consider getting one. Both the sound and the color of the light of that pedal are just mezmerizing.
@TRENT32 His new album "Born and Raised" was SUPPOSED to be released Oct./Nov. of this year... however, John developed a Granuloma on his vocal cords, so he had to put a halt on recording til he heals... we'll have to wait and see when that is going to be...
I couldn't agree more with Chann3191. Surround yourself with legends in the music industry (like Steve and Pino) and it's easy to sound great using riffs borrowed from some of the masters. Mr. Mayer has done his homework and he's shared his talent in recreating his interpretation of their life's work. IMHO it takes more than listening to and copying styles, before saying how "I" did this. Sock-foot bedroom practicing when you're 18 doesn't entitle a person to talk about "Buddy, BB and Eric"
God dammit, what happened to this John Mayer? Cool, collected, finally on the right path with his art, toning down his ego, ready to make a JM3 studio album for christ sake. And then he met Twitter...
I love this version of clarity. Anyone know where could find a full version without the IV? Edit: found it! This video has the interview + all the songs on their own afterwards: czcams.com/video/Qei7vUFVi-8/video.html
i can genuinely say that sometimes im there just to hear him talk.... obviously more to hear him sing and play but man his stream of conscious is just as entertaining
John please make more music similar to Battle Studies. On stage you said, "If you like this album, you will love the next one - it will be more of the same, I have so much material, it will be amazing." And then Born and Raised came out - it is not like Battle Studies - I still love your music - I am just not following deep in my heart and soul.
this made me want to listen to "a change is gonna come" by Sam Cooke. In fact, thats exactly what im going to do right now, and then some Ray Charles...
"experienced my childhood fantasy of being Stevie Ra-........a lead guitar player" lol
Same idea
LOVE how his brain works! 'Continuum' will always remain relevant, no matter which year/decade you're listening in. ♥
What the hell does walmart have to do with this?!!
"The thing about blues and soul music, is that you either have the heart for it, or you don't. And everybody does..."
He just gets it. He's one of the few artists today that are not only extremely talented, but understands what he's doing.
I can listen to him talk all day..
on his own live in L.A. is my favourite!
"Shut up and play, is a really good bumper sticker for my...head."
Continuum, best john mayer's album in my humble opinion.. and one of the best albuns of the past decade.
I love how there is not one single dislike...just 63 extremely smart people who recognise a true artist :)
i spend hours on youtube listening to john talk. hours...
Humble genius.
As cut-up clips, This was part of those videos that play over an over again on the tv's in wal-mart at one point...
Clarity is such a beautiful song
John was right. This album still has the same effect as it did when it came out!
I really miss this John
knowzn yeah me too. What happened to this humble personality? He is definitely not like this anymore.

I'd show up just to hear him talk and to eat some of the steaks! lol
lol i'd show up just to hear him talk
There aren't many musicians in our generation, if any for that matter, like John Mayer. Gotta appreciate what this guy does.

Olivia Verhelle He is a legend now. He withstood the test of time.
Amazing talent!
he was in such a good space during the jm3 and continuum period. good times.
john you are the best in popmusic
omg john you are perfect
John Mayer inspires me.
The version of Clarity that he plays at the Wal-Mart Sound check is the best version I have ever heard. It's awesome!
My respect for him just shot up like 400 points...
I really like it too, especially Walt Grace's Submarine Test, January 1967, it´s such a chill record, you can just sit back and enjoy the whole record over and over again :D
IN THE WORLD!
Hendrix 1968, SRV 1988, John Mayer 2008. All the other guys JM mentions in this are just epic blues players, they weren't true leading edge pioneers of electric guitar. Get what I'm sayin'? I was thinking this exact same thing on my way home from work today...exactly.
The song you're looking for is called "Clarity" From John's album called "Heavier Things". Hope this helped!
How have I never seen this. One of the best ever!
amen
this guy is a fucking genuis
Such a humble man!
I never saw this interview before, late but a great find. I wish we had more singers like him and he is absolutely right about timeless music tho, he is the proof.
HAHAHA "have you ever heard this sentence, OH WILL SOMEONE TURN THIS RAY CHARLES OFF!"
still waiting on that Trio album...
Gold Strat... Sweet!
such a good vultures solo
Exactly, I try as hard as I can to be as far as away from a Walmart as possible.
When john talks about people who love the road being crazy, he's right.
check out henry rollins' novel/audiobook, 'get in the van'.
Hahaha the end!
from connecticut
I agree. Probably the tightest version I've ever heard.
@facabella he was born and grew up in Connecticut. now living in NY...
Our generation's SRV,Clapton.Buddy,BB.
@TheLonesomeChef I think one's coming. I went to see pino at ronnie scotts in london, and he said he's got to fly straight back to L.A to record with John.
what does everyone think of his new record? I really like it... interested to know what others think
He said that in his TV show few years back. It's just John Mayer being sarcastic.
9:28 I also enjoy things that glow blue. If I get a new pedal for my pedalboard and the light on the pedal is blue, it makes me like the pedal even more. I miss the simplicity that John Mayer had in the beginning....
agree with you completely... Walt Grace would be my favorite too!
for real haha.
@lefte18 Not a studio album.

5:47 look at the logo on the jacket.
wheres that trio studio album!
It's coming out this/next year ^^ Took a while but yea
the gold strat.. it was black until john picked it up..
continuum is good, personally room for squares is my fave
Same.. although partly because half the time I have no idea what he's talking about.. haha
I'd pay to see JM grilling on stage.
LOL
@TheLonesomeChef i feel like that was battle studies
@TWTRose No.. Mayer did not call STEVE the "n" word. And i saw Mayer and Jordan live in concert after that accident.
It's the sponsor...it's the "red bull' events...the coca-cola...the pepsi...the warped tour of the VANS...
@batataloca77 thanks, do happen to know where hes from?
clarity
Jones Beach whatup
@TheLonesomeChef Did you pick up the live Trio album man?
that's a big grill you're gonna need! And I wan't my meet medium rare :-)
@lostinnumbersmusic lol!
Its called Clarity
@facabella home on left arm and life on right
God dammit, what happened to this John Mayer? Cool, collected, finally on the right path with his art, toning down his ego, ready to make a JM3 studio album for christ sake. And then he met Twitter...
i wish the trio would do a studio album. Probably not gonna happen, his voice might be done.
@CMSpida Interesting...
If john would be grillin, it would be the best steake ever haha
John Mayer is the man, definitely agree with BondsMusic that he is the most underrated musician of the century. The accent at 6:06 is pure New York.
I love this version of clarity. Anyone know where could find a full version without the IV?
Edit: found it! This video has the interview + all the songs on their own afterwards: czcams.com/video/Qei7vUFVi-8/video.html
@Vertson
you're wrong !
Actually, it'd be nice to pay for music and a steak.
Leslie in the background
JJ Johnson is wicked! Apart from all the other cool drumers this boy plays with.
what about his playboy interview..?
most underrated musician of the century.
i can genuinely say that sometimes im there just to hear him talk.... obviously more to hear him sing and play but man his stream of conscious is just as entertaining
John will be terribly disappointed to know how many people want to "turn off that Ray Charles" and listen to nonsense on the radio
@TheLonesomeChef try try try
ricky peterson on organ!
I have honestly never heard John Mayer say anything that I disagree with.
joelco92 you’ve obviously never read his playboy interview...
Why's explaining Heavier things in 2007?
I would pay $100.00 for a mediocre steak grilled by John Mayer. And I would love it.
excuse me, but is that the Flash logo on his chest??
fuck, that was a whole lotta talking
He ended up getting everyone black suits...
