anybody else have a signature strat sketch in a notebook from high school? haha. I love how real he is when it comes to his music. People need to get over John as a celebrity and just focus on the musical aspect of his life. Notice how different he is when he talks about guitars as opposed to women. He's not putting on that character, like in a movie, that you see in his tv show interviews.. you can tell that this is who he really is when you take all of the spot lights off of him.
What I notice about John is, he is very intelligent and is amazingly good at explaining things, his attention to detail is great, and that can only be a good thing, as it comes out in his music a great deal
The thing about strats is that they are an everyman's guitar. You can go into most music stores and buy one off the rack. They are modular, versatile and the blueprint of what the strat is was nearly perfected at the start. But with that, not all are created the same, but they are indeed so alike that you could put any strat with a SSS config into his hands and it would sound like John Mayer. But I truly do get the idea of "the one". The one guitar that just seems to be a puzzle piece that slots in perfectly. One you just gravitate to. You could have 5 instruments in front of you, all amazing, but you will almost always grab that one.
The only downside to the lacquer for me is it slows me down when I sweat. I took steel wool and removed it from the necks on my first two Strats. Now I'm not so much of a speed demon. Did it change the tone? Not one bit. When the finish wore off my black Strat body it also did nothing to change the tone. I picked it because it sounded right. Wherever it is (I think Florida) I'm sure it sounds the same.
If another guitarist, or an artist did a session like this. He would be all over the place. - But John, is so laid down, he tells every secret of everything. Who would say that they put their gitar in the freezer? This makes John Mayer human. Or wait; This guy is not human
Yeah I know, I ordered a Fender teambuilt CS myself to my own specs and waited 15 months for it. Mayer got his masterbuilt within a month which normally has a wait of 3 years according to Fender..
I trust the Fender Custom Shop quality has improved as myself and several others saw one in Guitar Center where the whammy bar hole was misaligned and u could not install the bar. This was confirmed by Guitar Center who had to send it back for repair and it has a signed certificate by the guy who made Claptons guitars at the time. The dufus either didn't do the work himself or failed to check and install the bar himself before signing off on a $6k guitar.
@standalone8844 even if he is (which i don't believe he is) doesnt take away from the fact that he is one of the best if not the best blues guitarist of this generation.
When is this guitar being produced? I thought Fender Custom were going to start making these models just like they started doing with David Gilmour's Black Strat ?? It was announced they were but I haven't seen any sign of them except his two signatures that are out at the moment. :/ please help!
he doesnt mean resonate as in produce a louder volume, like a hollowbody, he just means that the wood on a guitar is a factor of the guitars tone and if its covered with paint and cant breathe then it covers up the tone
Actually he's right ... Abrupt changes in temperature will fuck with the wood of your guitar, especially the neck ( and especially if it's glued to the body like a Les Paul )
Now that I think of it, I was just speculating, as the amp is not fully visible. If it was me, I would be playing my Dumble... Sounds good in any case.
@Zebarbas actually I have checked out his back catalog, you know like when Oteil Burberidge was a full time bass player for him and Mike Mattison was still singing. And yes, he was a straight blues player, just because he doesn't sound like SRV or for truly uninformed people Hedrix doesn't mean he didn't play blues. His actual guitar runs are based in blues pentatonic scales, only played with slide and African percussion with Motown keys. The vid you posted has the "Blue" flat third in scale.
then what does? the type of wood? what if i made a guitar entirely of lacquer materials and no wood? like basically out of a pasty and hardened paint-like material? it would sound hella weird. If it does, and i know it will, then lacquer will affect the tone and resonance on a smaller degree
@MrSilverado96 Derek Trucks was not taught by Duane Allman. Duane passed back in 1971. If you mean influenced, then yes, he was influended by Duane Allman, Even though Mayer repackages a lot of stuff, he definitely has his own pedestal to stand on. I find his guitar playing has become pretty original as the years have passed. Trucks does have a far more original sound and style of playing though.
@1Guug No, I don't know where you've heard Trucks, but he is straight blues, biggest influences were Elmore James and he was taught by Duane Allman (for which his father played drums for) and as far as Bonamassa having something missing, again, I'm not sure what you're listening to. All Mayer is doing, and he openly admits this, is repackaging stuff that has already been made by SRV and Hendrix. Please, become informed and learn what you're talking about before trying to interject yourself.
" i was concerned about what color my signature model would be when i was in high school " This man is a legend
Let’s be honest He wanted a guitar like Stevie’s lol
Why the "lol"? A great idea for a guitar is a great idea for a guitar, regardless.
@@tubingforever CRAB BATTLE!!!
@@wgbearden7776 OH IT'S ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!!
shit, who don't?
What's the joke? He defines himself as "Stevie Ray Vaughan wannabe".
3:26 oh hell no not that word!!
It turns out that John Mayer can not only be a great sing-song writer and a guitarist, he can also be an amazing salesman! Much love.
"I was like you just, sit in there and change.......and the next day I took it out and start playing it, and it still wasn't there, it was just cold"

His clean tone is unparalleled
really? because check out the people he took it from.
U are gay
Spend $20k give or take a few grand and you too can sound like this if you practice for 10k hours
Man...I thought this was gonna be an Inter-racial Porn....
Yo Mamma the way he plays that guitar it pretty much was

john mayer is really good at getting that John Mayer Tone...
Such finesse in the sound, great!
DRINKING GAME: Take a shot everytime John Mayer say's "Guitar".
Super Clean And Incorporates Melody
I could just listening to his voice for like hours! Cool story.

Damn! Use a respirator mask when spray painting, John.

Well shit, that's his secret. The 4th position pickup from heaven
Yeah I know, I ordered a Fender teambuilt CS myself to my own specs and waited 15 months for it. Mayer got his masterbuilt within a month which normally has a wait of 3 years according to Fender..
you know that hes loves stevie
Nao sou fan de guitarra mas em blues tiro meu chapeu pois adoro.
I dont like guitars very much, but on blues i give and i really love.
Wow he actually makes sense when he's talking about guitars
"that's where its got the" is all you hear before he turns on the beast mode switches on his guitar and amp.
I think it's actually quite the opposite. He is such an enthusiast that he wants to play like his idols so just creates what he wants.
Best Dumble demo on the web
ele é fantástico...
The freezer did nothing, opening it up and fixing what was broken is what made it perfect.
great solo!
And the next day I took it out and it just wasn’t there. My hopes of being able to freeze my strat so it can sound like Mayer’s was gone
He said he was looking at fender catalogs in high school detention. I wonder what he did to get there
@JBusie1996 It's called the placebo effect, like a perceived difference that really isn't there.
I trust the Fender Custom Shop quality has improved as myself and several others saw one in Guitar Center where the whammy bar hole was misaligned and u could not install the bar. he's working hard for his guitar royalties..
that guitar sounds like heaven
wait... he put the guitar in the frickn freezer!?!
“Yah know”
say what you will, but he's fucking inspiring!
he doesnt mean resonate as in produce a louder volume, like a hollowbody, he just means that the wood on a guitar is a factor of the guitars tone and if its covered with paint and cant breathe then it covers up the tone
@Kaizeppelin it is when they correct the wiring
You can really feel that hendrix vibe.
is there any footage of him playing it in the early years he had it? without the wear?
OH, I used to draw my future Signature Private Stock PRS everyday of class... such a coincidance
Actually he's right ... Abrupt changes in temperature will fuck with the wood of your guitar, especially the neck ( and especially if it's glued to the body like a Les Paul )
Everyone needs a black strat story, I sure have one, my best guitar ever
It still wasn't there, it was just cold.
Anyone can have a fender built to their specifications .. As long as you have the money.
I see what you did there, how clever of you.
Who says I can't get stoned? Turn off the lights and the telephone
Me and my house alone, who says I can't get stoned
PRS would of never let John touch his signature like Fender did.
*would've
PRS would’ve wired the ground correctly.
THATS why I play starts
Now that I think of it, I was just speculating, as the amp is not fully visible. If it was me, I would be playing my Dumble... Sounds good in any case.

Wtf are you talking about
after watching this i will go sand down the finish of my 59 lp...
He's so fucking good I don't even want to play anymore...
Build-a-guitar-workshop "he made sure I closed the door, and pressed start" - JCM
I agree
one of the best fenders ever made.. i like it coz it has a rosewood fretboard.. not like the traditional fenders w/ maple
I put my guitar in the freezer too.
Turns out the guitar is perfectly fine, I'm just shit.
He had it made with wear, if you skip to about 1:55 you can hear him talk about it
then what does? the type of wood? what if i made a guitar entirely of lacquer materials and no wood? like basically out of a pasty and hardened paint-like material? it would sound hella weird. If it does, and i know it will, then lacquer will affect the tone and resonance on a smaller degree
@MrNicoPotamus sorry, "from the Custom Shop" I meant.
I slept while watching this xD

I didn't know he went on tour in the third world.
Hi Mike! Eldred!!! Henry from San Dimas
@mrrampage Actually, I think it's an overdrive reverb.
no wonder that its neck warped, he put the bloody thing in a freezer, I imagine he did a lot of nasty shenanigans to that poor thing
at 3:31 you can see the steel string singer in the background :D so yeah this is the dumble
I wonder why he was always in detention?
I want the John Mayer back from 2006
The guitar is great but his two rock amp is what i really want
"The body of a strat with laquer doesn't resonate" ... WHAT? Yeah actually it does. With thin (nitro) finish will resonate much much more though.
I was hoping he'd say the freezer thing worked. I was going to chuck my shit into the freezer lol
wait just so i will finally know did it come with all the paint on the body and it wore off over time or did he get it like that
"It was a technical thing" ahahahahaha
Whatever gets the job done.
The kid who thought FENDER was going to fold with out him ! Wrong .
@gazza351 The Original was a Relic that John got a Custom Shop. Had you fooled didn't it?
love this video. he looks like Criss Angel.
Paul reed smith entered chat
it's all in the hair!
was anyone else staring at the dumble in the backround?
@yearofrolling not quite..
That's a great guitar. But.. will it blend?
yea! turn off the lights and the telephone john you GET stoned! lmao
is he using fender or two rock amp in this video?
Looks like a prs
Is that his Dumble or his Two Rock in that clip?
who gives a sweet flyin' flannigan about a signature guitar
He got his masterbuilt guitar within a month!!! Normal people have to wait almost 3 years for a masterbuilt guitar order with their own specs...
little wing`s vibe
No one, I'm just stating a possibility.
This story sits on a throne of lies
czcams.com/video/EnZ6FiQsq1Q/video.html
Guys/Gals, please don't put your guitars in the freezer just because he did. He must have been stoned.
