Good news! Boxes ended up staying at $210 USD so these are even better savings/value than predicted here.
I want to start an AOS Army, think I‘ll go with the Skaven Box 😅
It seems like this year they are specifically targeting the boxes at people who are starting out or have maybe a vanguard box for an army that they haven’t gone very deep into it yet. They’re decent as starting points but really good as a suplement to a small collection.
Thanks for this! I haven't seen any in depth reviews for the AOS boxes. Been thinking about getting that kruleboyz box to go with my dominion box, the skaven one would be tempting if I didn't already get echoes of doom. The nighthaunt and gloomspite boxes are also tempting to get into the faction with. I think they did a good job at making these boxes good for new players into a faction.
Love your content. Keep up the good fight for waaaaagh on a budget.
Thanks! Hope you're able to krump your enemies without breaking the bank!
As someone with just the Kruleboyz from the dominion half, the Kruleboyz box set is certainly tempting.
I’m in this position too - so I picked one up!
I was pretty excited when I first saw the Skaven box, but I have SO many Clanrats and Plague monks already.
The Sylvaneth box looks great, plus I believe Drycha buffs Spite Revenants so could be a solid starter army, but I think the Stormcast is the one I'll most likely be getting.
As someone who is painting up my first miniatures in a unit of Hexwraiths, the Nighthaunt box has got me excited over the roof! Can't wait to have my army of ghosties. Only thing is that it's kinda weird since with only one unit each of Harridans and Revenants it's hard to run their respective subfactions, but maybe it's not much of an issue!
Ordered the Thunderstrike Spearhead box myself. Though in all honesty i got a much much better deal for it.
Over here the MSRP for the models seperate would be around 259euro's. Box Thunderstrike Spearhead box is 170 from GW. My regular store (not a GW store) sells everything GW with a standard 10% discount. Then i also had my own personal discount so got the box for 122 euro's. Then to think the dragons alone would be 90 normally in that store i got a freaking fantastic deal this year :D 2000pts SCE army ready to go soon :D (got more SCE boxes laying around)
Also very informative video btw. I like the full breakdown of the models points and comparing the box to the actual msrp of all the contents. Was my first video of you but going to sub and see what else you did :)
That's awesome! Sounds like a solid deal on a solid army (and those dragons are just such great models). Glad you liked the video
I was very tempted by the squigs, but really only need another mangler to even my force out. I was just excited they got a good box. I also like the the nighthaunt box. I’d like a black coach just to paint it, I run a bladegheist heavy army already, but having the other two units would give me flexibility in how I build my lists. Lady O would be the only superfluous unit in there for me.
Yeah that's the problem with these when you have an existing force, same issue for me with my Kruleboyz, everything except the vulture would be mostly superfluous. Hope the nighthaunt force works out well if you decide to go for it :)
I just want a refresh of the Seraphon, mostly Saurus/Knights. I'd totally get into AoS then.
Same. I would have a Seraphon army if the Saurus weren’t so ugly
Lol you won’t be as interested in this army if it was not as OP..
Coming from the Total War games and having loved the Lizardmen I would have definitely started AoS with Seraphon. That was until I saw how the Cold one riders looked like who would have come with the Start Collecting box that had my favorite unit, the Carnosaur in it.
Instead I went with one of my other favorites, Ogors or Orruks. I preferred the Stonehorn model and now I’m all Mawtribes.
You are in luck
@@magicgeek1237 just saw it! Super pumped!
good video and good break down , cheers for advice
I actually just starting building out the squig part of my GSG army so definitely picking up the squigalanche box
Vanquishers are indeed battleline. Thanks for the video!
Ugh, thank you. I thought it seemed weird that they "weren't" when I was looking through the app and warscroll builder; my eyes must be playing tricks on me thanks
Kruleboyz box is fine if you're new to the army and want to lean into the big monsters. I know one guy who's even considering getting two copies, but then our FLGS has a hefty discount on GW stuff so the effective savings are much better.
GW knew what they were doing with this combination for sure. A good way to move sitting product as I doubt the bolt boys and gutripper kits are selling very well individually and the warehouses were probably overflowing with their sprues, simply due to so many dirt cheap dominion sets still floating about that cost as much as 2 kits of gutrippers alone.
Well, you can have 4 behemoth units at 2k points, so two of those boxes is not that awful idea.
YOU THE MAN!
The Squig box is in my books a perfect box.
A SSS, a P rank, anything.
If you want squigs, you probably don't really want all the other stuff they'd put in past Christmas boxes, this time they put exactly what it says on the tin.
It also has the cooler models of the range inside.
It's awesome on all counts I agree!
I plan to get 2 of the gitz box as I want to do an all squig army. Hopefully the new book doesn't make them trash tier.
Small addendum to the Vulcha, not only is it easy to effectively build both, it's one of the easier models to magnetize sturdily.
Great tip! Thanks, I'll have to try that if/when I eventually pick one up
The stromcast box really reminded me just how much stormcast I have. At first I was like I need to get this box, then I realized I have almost everything in the box half unpainted lol
In this boat with you. While this would compliment what I have nicely, another 200+ is too much more to spend on what started as a fun little side army/project, that I never seem to finish. I had started with two sets of the dominion half and the Start collecting thunderstrike box, and managed to get them all built originally but have yet to paint a single one as they sit in the boxes.
You should do a “what to do after purshsing the Christmas battleforces video”!
That's a good idea! I've got a bit of a backlog so may not be able to do it in time for it to be relevant but I think cinderfall gaming has done some videos on the individual boxes that may have info on next steps
i think its alway good to note that these boxes are designed to get new players into the game or at least to start a new army.
Absolutely! I think this are clearly the best value in that situation
I would ask why don’t skaven bundle more skryre or moulder units but the answer is those models are still in metal or resin
I think they designed and made these boxes before the Kruleboyz points drop so maybe that why it’s so low.
Kinda like deja vu with the point drops immediately after the dominion box hahaha
Wondering how you'd feel about the Kruleboyz box with the Dominion box as a starter force?
I think it's an excellent buy that way! The snatchaboss is essential, the vulture is awesome, and you'll need the extra boltboyz and gutrippaz (and it's nice to get the command options)
I dont have dragons so Im getting the stormcast box the other units are also new to me.
replace 20 monks with 20 stormvermin
replace bell and 20 monks with verminlord.
This is imo a better change since skaven battleforce should have a lot of oomph model-wise.
WIth my change we have 65 models which is still a big enough amount to make this box nice and we get rid of redundant bell.
That's a good idea! I think I was leaning a bit too hard into making the box appeal to existing players rather than new ones.
My other thought was to overhaul the whole thing and lean into Skryre hard with jezzails, warpfire throwers, a doomwheel, maybe even finally skyre acolytes at a reasonable price. Maybe one day haha
Definitely plan on grabbing that Nighthaunt box. Glad I started playing again lol
It's a great spread!
@@BudgetWaaagh it really is. I'm glad I wait to pick up Lady O.
You forgot the extra Plague priest or Grey seer you get for whatever mounted option you dont choose
I mentioned them but intentionally left them out of the value/points analysis because GW doesn't include a base for the foot hero in the screaming bell kit, unlike for example the cauldron of blood (unless their website is inaccurate)
I’m honestly betting $230 for each.
The squig one is really tempting. Sylvaneth too since I’ve been slow collecting them and don’t have drycha yet.
Otherwise, I’m not overly impressed. Not a fan of having mono-kit named characters since they effectively kill any value the moment you already have one. Night haunt is worthless to anyone who already has her, same with Sylvaneth, I’m just lucky I don’t have her yet.
I suppose it is a good way to limit demand though… kinda risky for scalpers too.
That's a fair point. Value drops off even more if you already have Olynder, Drycha. BUT it does make them much more appealing for starting a new army.
They could be $230, we'll have to see. When I crunched the numbers I settled on 220 since that landed the % discount in the typical GW range of about 27 to 36 percent they tend to aim for with their box sets
@@BudgetWaaagh 210 in the end :D
Not going to lie, the skaven box is tempting me.
I may have undersold that it's still a great value if you're new to the army, and I think having a horde of 80 rats to start at a discount is a great way to lean into the horde style of gameplay. My only advice would be to consider keeping an eye on ebay leading into preorders as you may be able to find a better deal on a similar force
@@BudgetWaaagh The big question now is what will GW charge this year for these boxes?
I’m only here to convert these boxes into 40k armies lol
Algorithms for the Algorithm God
Damn I'm thinking about the Squigalance, but I always wanted to have some Sylvaneth, too and I already built Drycha. Sucks now.
If you already have drycha you could consider looking at the old start collecting box and a new vanguard box instead? That would get you the 2 treelords, the dryads, one unit of revenants, plus a unit of kurnoth hunters and 2 branchwyches for for about $190 (I'm seeing the old start collecting still available for ~80 USD, and the vanguard at 110 from discount retailers). Probably a better deal if you already have Drycha!
