  • Why Games Workshop does not want you to buy movement trays anymore and how to base miniatures and movement trays easily! A movement tray is a useful tool for gamers who play Warhammer 40k, Lord of the Ring Battle for Middle Earth Battle Strategy Game, Age of Sigmar or Warhammer Fantasy tabletop miniature games. It allows players to easily move their miniatures around the game board and keeps the miniatures organized and spaced out correctly. Games Workshop used to produce miniature movement trays for Warhammer 40k apocalypse and Lord of the Ring but have since stopped producing these products. In todays video I will show you how to make and how to paint cheap movement treys that match the theme of your army. I will explain how to base miniatures,how to paint textured ground and place miniature grass tufts onto bases. Overall, movement trays are a valuable tool for miniature tabletop players. They save time, keep miniatures organized and spaced out properly, and can help protect miniatures. If you're looking to improve your gaming experience, consider using a movement tray for your army.

    I was one of the principle photographers for the War of the Ring rulebook. The reason we didn't use movement trays was because we started production on the book almost a year before the product was released, and the movement trays had not yet been made. So we had to use pieces of plasticard, which we just textured up and blu-tacked the minis to. If you think moving 50 minis is hard - imagine how many we had to keep moving for those battle shots 😉

    I have used movement trays for years. There are many out there, mdf, plastic, and even clear acrylic, in any combination of unit size. I like the way you painted the trays but a quicker method is using sand, small ballast and flock then adding little grasses. If you only game small forces then no need for trays. Great ideas re dry brushing using cheap acrylic paint.

      Not sure about the upcoming rules for Fantasy but movement trays were encouraged through 8th ed. Most players that I've gamed with don't measure to the 1/16th or even 8th of an inch. If your model is within 1/4 of an inch or less, it's considered good. So, as long as the width of the tray from the leading edge to the front of the base is less than 1/4" then the front of the tray is considered the front of the base.

    • @triangulan
      @triangulan Před rokem

      Nah, WFB was the archetypal "rank and flank" game, so always worked best with movement trays. In fact, at the end units were getting larger and larger (you got bonuses for having units that were 10 wide, for example), so I would imagine they were *more* necessary, rather than less.
      LotR was *meant* to be played as a skirmish game, so I think they didn't really see the need for lots of co-ordinated movement until they released War of the Ring (which died a death, so I presume ws a bit of a flop for them). The game is built around the interplay of heroes and troops, so they didn't expect people to spam basic troops as much as they did (and part of the reason later editions introduced the *requirement* to buy heroes before troops, to get it back towards its intention).

    As a massive fan of SBG i will concede that the game perhaps does not scale to really large model count games very well. I feel like if you are having a larger game and moving lot of warriors together you and your opponent should agree to measure a few and then move everyone else into about the right place.

    It's ironic that first Warhammer Fantasy had movement trays then Lord of the Rings had it as well. Then they killed Fantasy and eliminated the movement trays for Lord of the Rings. Then they made movement trays for 40k which were compatible for Lord of the Rings and Age of Sigmar which they then also eliminated. It's almost like they hate the games.

  • @mortenbrandtjensen6470

    The issuenis not the lifting, or the waiting time. The issue is you are often playing on a timer - you have to finish the game so you can get a good nights sleep, or you are at an event and needs to finish the game to be ready for the next game.

    Thanks for posting this excellent video! GW is obviously in it for the money and understands that their target audience does not necessarily have a long-term interest in game component continuity. If things are always in flux (figures, rules systems/versions, terrain, and even basing) they will make more $ coming out with new "innovative" products. I figured out decades ago that YOUR OWN basing and rules systems are always best/never go obsolete without your consent. Recommendation: Make up your own bases like these or consider buying steel baseplates and magnetic troop bases as I do (so you can easily change up troop spacing and transport your army, which may include lead and pewter figures as well as plastic). Don't be tied into what GW is selling at the moment; your gaming friends will see the light and join you in creative independence.

    What do you mean, "Most men do not know what 6" is"? It is simple, fold in half and measure from the base. The problem is getting the base to the starting point of the movement without demoralising your troops.

    Im not convinced that every opponent will agree with a shield wall that is about one full 25mm base wider while sitting on a movement tray than one without a tray. Since you can guard a broader choke point with less models whilst holding your shieldwall...

    Really got back into miniature painting thanks to seeing one of your videos on the LOTR figures. Having found all of the figures i got as a kid with the magazines which gave you a figure every fortnight. And metal ones for the main characters. Currently working my way through the mass of goblins. 👍

    Problem with square bases is how close the models are to each other. you can see how old old Slaves of darkness have their elbows next to their sides to fit next to each other. new slaves are in more dynamic poses etc.
