Are used Electric Cars still in demand?

  • End of February 2024 update (including end of January as we missed that one, sorry!)
I run through how the used car market is for used Electric Vehicles. Not just my own opinions but giving statistics from Autotrader Market insights.
There have been price drops over the last couple of months (not just with EVs but across a lot of the used car market) but actually I think they’ve steadied off now and restocking hasn’t been too easy. Sales have been pretty good and were low on stock right now. Buying stock has needed some serious hunting and paying fairly strong prices.
How has the new Tesla Model 3 highland affected the market in particular? Well actually as they are being somewhat trickled out it hasn’t caused too much disturbance. 2021 refresh cars with heat pump are certainly in demand now they can be found for under £30,000. I think they’re great value now. Porsche Taycans and used Audi e-tron also amazing value for buyers, albeit painful depreciation for owners needing to sell. Trouble with such cars is they make a lot of sense new for many of their buyers because of the tax benefits when buying through a business, but this has led to big drops on the used market.
I think many people have decided not to sell because their cars values have dropped.
But the key data here is that demand for EVs / Electric Vehicles is good!
I hope this gives an honest insight and if you need to sell your EV please get in touch. We will consider buying but can also offer a brokerage service which is a great way to get the most for your car and usually returns much more that trade values.
    Thanks for watching.

I bought a used late 21 M3 LR about a month ago. It took me 2 weeks of calling round dealers and sellers to find a car that was actually still for sale and in the end I bought privately. The only issue I encountered was price. Lots of places had £30+k cars sat there. But the places that were knocking them out the door at 27-28k were selling them fast - within a day especially for good cars with low miles. One dealer I spoke with were selling 30+ M3s a month. I did look at the RSEV site, and tbh it was all way above my price range. They are all clearly very very well prepared cars though. In the end I paid £27k for a clean 25k mile LR at a few days over 2 years old. To me they are great propositions. 4 year warranty plus 4 years drive line. Regular sw updates. Good community so DIY fixes in the future should be possible. Low road tax as of next year, insurance seems to be creeping down now a bit and finally the cost to run at 7.5p/kw is basically buttons. Oh and the performance you get for your money, also great. Other than depreciation there is not a lot to worry about but when you are saving thousands a year over ICE cars in fuel alone then it really does not matter so much. Just my 2ps worth.

I did similar, but at the start of November 23 and ended up paying 31 at an independent dealer, but the car had only 15,000 miles. Probably lost bit of value since then, but that's cars in general. As you say it's almost free to run, and blisteringly fast. Had a few little niggles with moisture in a light and tailgate alignment, but Tesla have been superb under warranty.

@@PaulCopp Which is why I think the market will remain strong as they are great value. If you can charge at home they are literally a no brainer. The fact there is no real servicing to do can be thousands of savings too. I think people are slowly catching on its a good deal at this sort of price.

@@auwz66 Lots of friends asked questions when they saw it, and just don't seem to get the advantages. Tesla in particular have massive advantages that the general public are just not aware of. Zero servicing (most legacy brands still pretending that their EVs need an annual service to keep their legacy money stream going), by far the best and cheapest public charging network, over the air software improvements, excellent performance, excellent battery conditioning technology. They also don't get how much easier single pedal driving is. If you are spending 500-600 a year on servicing an ICE car, then after 8 years you would have 5000 towards a battery on the remote chance it fails completely after the warranty expires, without costing in the fuel and VED savings. Absolute no brainer for a car with this level of performance.

Surely a big problem here is that Supply is a real number of cars, with a value that can be measured in the trade. But what Autotrader calls “Demand” is actually just clicks on a website, with no way to assess what customers are willing to pay for any particular model. Comparing these cannot give a realistic “Market Health”. Also if something goes up 83% in 3 months, that’s probably because the absolute numbers are really small.

Maybe the dinosaurs are finally realising they dont all catch fire and saves a fortune on fuel. Since ive had my model 3 ive had many conversations with people who didnt even factor in servicing costs, and fuel. our previous car (range rover evoque) was 600 a year for a full service and MOT. Thats a guaranteed cost every year without other repairs or serviceable parts like brakes, discs pads etc. most of the newer cars have long warranties and are cheap to run and require little to no maintenance. Think most sensible people are starting to come around to the idea. You have to remember its still early days in the grand scheme of things. Everyone ive met who seems to have a negative opinion on them is either misinformed or have never been in one or drove one 🤣 they arent for everyone, style wise people may hate them for example. But you simply cant argue about running costs, maintenance costs compared to a mid range ice car such as Volkswagen, BMW. Servicing on them is ridiculous at main dealers. I dont understand the weird obsession and being determined to pay fortunes on VAT on fuel and the government just wasting it!

I drive a 2021 VW I.D 3 Tour 5 and last time I checked the tour 5 with the largest battery isn't for sale any more and I discovered that the smaller batter with less kit is the same price as I paid for my 2021high spec with largest battery.
I'm on my 3rd electric car and won't be buying new again, why some might want to know ? well there are more than a few reasons I mention below in no particular order just off the top of my head.
1, range is still an issue even if I have around 350 Kms range real life range 217 miles, can add maybe 30-40 miles more if I drive it slow in warm weather.
2, recharge times on DC " fast, Rapid" chargers is still not nearly good enough, especially when the battery is cold.
3 Not nearly enough 100+ kw chargers.
    4 Cost
5 there are still trips where we take our outlander diesel because it's a lot less hassle.
    6 poor resale value
7 Too much infuriating tech, screen, menus and no proper controls for Heat, Fan, Radio etc, vey irritating to the point I won't buy a car with this level of stupid design again. Tesla or not, I certainly won't buy a tesla either.
Most electric cars are bought on PCP because of the cheap monthly payments then at year 3 people won't want to face paying a big balloon payment so they get another brand new car and this is an extremely bad way to buy cars in my opinion, if you can't buy cash then you really can't afford a car. PCP is a clever trick to keep people sucked into buying new cars.
2nd hand prices are too high and cars will have less range than when new and what happens if the battery has issues out of warranty ?
Anyway, in general I do not like the way the auto industry is heading, too much tech and the screen is the focal point in modern cars, I have to go through menus to access radio and stations, heat and ac, blower etc, it's very frustrating. I drove my mothers 2010 fiesta a couple of months ago and it was amazing having such easy access to heating controls, radio and station presets. Turning on and off heated heats is a chore and those haptic "buttons" and sliders drive me insane. I spend most of the time swearing at the car than driving it.
A lot of cars are going down this route of screen and so much tech, I just checked the other day and the 1.2 petrol clio and the 1.0L Yaris no longer exists, you got to pay a massive premium for the hybrids for very little benefit in fuel consumption, where are the cheap simple cars ?
I wish the auto industry would stop forcing all this very expensive tech at us for massive prices and just give us cheap simple to operate cars.
EDIT: just to add a note my battery is 82 Kwh 73.5 usable when new and this being my 3rd EV I would never buy an ev with less range because when you are at a charger waiting for one to become available for 30 mins or more than having to face a potential 50 min charge you will absolutely wish you either bought the ICE car, kept your ICE car or got the car with the largest battery you could get. Range is important and don't let any ev "enthusiast" tell you other wise, yes, most of us don't drive too far each day but often we drive beyond the EV range and this is a pain, really a pain.

Your Reports use % terms which may not reflect the true picture. The specific number of units would be far more consistent with your report. Claiming a 50% increase in demand may translate to 15 units from 10. As you will be aware that translates to a low demand essentially. You also state the manufacturers have made significant reductions to the price of units. They do so to try to stimulate a reduced demand, which will also cause the residual value in the second-hand car market to drop by a similar margin. Most buyers of EVs from new, have found that the depreciation in price has been over 30% in the year. That is a conservative estimate. Claiming as you do that the EV market is in a positive position is maybe not the most accurate analysis of the statistics.

Gave the other view. Harry had some interesting points. Wasn’t a rant. Harry isn’t anti EV. I am looking currently and experiencing the same price difference. Similar questions. Here is one pro view. It did not make sense for him. Nothing wrong with that.
Range isn’t good enough for me. Appreciate I am not the majority. Needs to be around 500 miles. Depreciation I’ve seen is scary on EVs. Yes higher today on all cars. But I need to buy new, as I buy a car privately but have business mileage. No BIK for me!

    • @grahamcook9289
      @grahamcook9289 Před 3 měsíci

@@mikewallace1723 No, it was definitely a rant by his standards. Harry does get a bee in his bonnet sometimes, whether it be about motoring or farming. I'm not sure what was really upsetting him. His points about dealers and EVs was addressed by Richard, a dealer. Harry's point about deprecation made little sense to me as he leases/hires his brand new cars for 3 years, he doesn't buy them at the end. He just hands them back and goes onto another 3 year deal for a brand new car. So the depreciation is not his problem. The depreciation is a good thing though as it makes EVs more affordable to a greater number of people. Vehicles have always depreciated significantly from new the moment they drive off the forecourt, so why should EVs be any different? The more expensive the car the greater the depreciation. The only remarkable thing is that EVs have held their value for as long as they have, but supply both new and used is now outstripping demand ( early adopters gone, covid and supply chain issues over). The smart money has always been to buy a car that is a year old, in good condition and with low mileage. I always do that and I am now actively considering buying such an EV for the first time. I could now buy a very affordable EV with a range of 300+/- miles range, that could recharge from 20-80% in 30-40 minutes, or the times it takes to have a refreshment break on a long journey. Don't forget 300 miles is probably 5/6 hours driving on a motorway in the UK. Then you can hit the road again for another 200 miles or 4 hours driving, making a 500 mile journey. I live in Kent and that means with a single charging stop I could be in the Scottish Highlands or Western isles. Or I could go continental and reach northern Spain, western Czechia, northern Italy or southern Sweden. So tell me, why do you need 500 miles range on a single charge? Which BTW, will be here in the next 5 years with evolving battery chemistry. The ICE is as good as it's going to get, without emission cheats, but the race is on with regard to BEV development and continuous improvement.
One last point about Harry. He had a Jaguar iPace which is quite old technology now, has not been improved, and always had an inefficient drive train in the 200 +/- miles range. His Range Rover was a hybrid, which like all hybrids in today's world of public charging a nonsense. Harry is also in a rather unique positioning that he has, by domestic standards, a massive solar PV array on his home/farm, as well as a wind turbine. Having made that investment in clean renewable energy it is inexplicable that Harry would not make the most of that for effectively free motoring most of the time by charging at home. And if he is worried about the public fast charging network, then buy a Model Y and use the Tesla rapid DC charging network. At my local M2 services 20 Tesla chargers have just gone live, both sides, as well as 20 non-Tesla chargers. The Model Y would also meet Harry's gripe about towing, and all vehicles whether they be ICE or EV, are less efficient when towing. And Harry's only towing around a load of old ICE polluting junk anyway that is only really fit for a static museum or ironically conversion to EV. 🤣

Porsche Taycan's aren't selling like your Blue one with high mileage that was going up and down in price week by week. Autotrader removed its price tracker so was this because buyers could see how much cars were dropping each month ? Porsche tried to hide battery faults and bad range by adding some of the battery buffer so you can use more of the capacity. I think the biggest issue is too many ex lease cars flooded the market but a word of warning. Many ex lease cars might have been rapid charged a lot so the battery might have higher degradation and the car would have logged its charging history. Any battery warranty claim could be refused due to the previous charging history before you owned the car as it states to keep the battery between 20 and 80% most of the time and not to rapid charge that often. You also have to use the main dealer for repairs as there aren't many garages capable to fixing EV's. Work on the high voltage battery would have to be done by the main dealer or you risk losing the warranty that is left (8 years from car registration). There are some EV's that link the cabin heater and other car functions to the high voltage battery system so again you have no choice but to use the main dealer.

I love Richard and his video but I deal with data everyday and on this video Richard mon ami, you are not being straight. The +82% you see on demand is actually «people looking at EV cars »…the very interesting word is here is « looking » because it doesn’t mean « buying ». This raised is due to the fact that people know that the EV market has taken a deep price cut and they’re looking if they can get a good deal.
Now the Y data is more interesting because it shows you that some model (Taycan, e8, Y…etc) are dropping so much that you can acquire at low price and people are interested to see what the bottom price could be!
In the end model 3, Kona, and others are also dropping…so if you look on auto trader other data sets, especially on a per model basis, there is a genuine price drop with an increase « demand » which is in fact just queries to check the price drop.
You can make data say what you want to say by only showing part of it. It works for everything.

My experience. Bought a M3LR in April from Tesla direct £36k with grey and white seats with 17k on the clock. They throw in AEP and an extra year standard warranty so 5 years in total and 60k miles. Battery and drivetrain is still 8 years.I do think that I bought to early into the EV game looking at the anti EV comments and articles in papers some of which are true. EG non Tesla charging which is atrocious. Anyway lets look at costs. I am doing c. 12k per year and saving . £2k per year on fuel, and I base this on a 40mpg average that I would get out of an ICE car of this performance. I also save £1k a year on home electricity as I have batteries (and Richard looks like he will talk about that soon) and thus charge overnight for home use (EV only tariff - btyw Octopus did check that I had an EV, they wanted proof from me. My insurance has gone up to £800 vs £600 that I would pay for say a similarly performanced BMW M3. My current thinking is that the heavy depreciation I have suffered in my first year. My guess is £10k will now slow down and in say 3 years time when I intend to sell the car I would expect to get c. £12k for it. So my calculations are this; Depreciation £24k - 4 years of savings of petrol £8k, 4 year savings of home electricity so £4k, Servicing savings of say £500 a year = £2k, Insurance increase over period say £1k so 24-8-4-2+1 = £11k net cost of ownership. Which over 4 years of ownership equates to £2.75k per year. Or £229 per month. For a performance car ... and I use it... I dont think that is too bad.
I may even be a bit heavy on depreciation tbh - I mean what can you buy for £12k these days that is 6 years old with say 60k on the clock with this performance - actually nothing. I looked through the trader and the ave cost for a BMW 435 BMW grand coupe is about £18k. So perhaps I would get £15k+ at 6 years old. If that was the case then net cost is c. £8k and thus £2k per year. Yes If I sell it now I will be nursing a loss and wished I had waited until Jan this year to buy an EV, but I am where I am and its not that bas IMO

There are a lot of small EVs coming on the market now the leases taken out in 2020/2022 are coming to an end.
I’ve seen Zoe prices drop about 10%.
Unfortunately the cost of charging, for those not able to charge at home, is a real concern. I like the Zoe because I can charge at 22kW at 30-40p/kW but things that charge slow on AC and need to use rapid DC, the 8p charge is a killer.
ChargePlace Scotland used to be free but now the cost is pushing people back to ICE.

Experience based on one vehicle model leads to conclusion based on entire market?

How many have you seen for sale with 180k km? With virtually no moving parts I’d rather have an ev with that mileage than an ICE car with far more things to go wrong!
