I think there are some contradictions and issues for reason:
      1) The Warioware title are Wario's current main appearances. Adding more Wario Land games mean doubling his importance in the Mario universe which might cause imbalance and unfairness to other characters. Unless Nintendo manage to combine the two series into a "Warioware Land" series, or give the Land games to Waluigi who still lacks his own games at this point.
      2) Nintendo has good reason to focus on Super Mario titles along with Donkey Kong Coutry and Yoshi titles. I understand Wario Land serves a different purpose of gameplay and story, but it has difficulty to keep in pace with the reast of Mario platformer titles, if it might be easier to make Wario just playable in those mentinoed titles instead.
As for Waluigi, I wouldn't mind if supposed WarioLand has him playable. But we should also notice that Waluigi can still be a playable character in some other Super Mario games without Wario, just NIntendo never try hard to push that.
Also just like said, the current Wario characters like Mona and Jimmy are also supposed to be candidates for a new Wario platformer title, not just Waluigi.

      @@DoracakeThey
They should double Wario's importance, he was huge in the 90s and now he's died down a ton after Wario Land slowed down. Wario was a great Nintendo mascot during his glory days and needs to come back. Wario Land games won't work for Waluigi because he's skinny and has not even demonstrated that he's truly greedy. Also Nintendo treats the Wario games as another franchise, so it doesn't affect Waluigi at all.
I fully agree with you on Waluigi being put in mainline super Mario games, he should be there.

When I played medium mode, it pretty much looked like easy mode, and that would result in hard mode looking pretty much like medium mode, so super hard mode would just be hard mode to me, and it was very hard. Wario Land: Shake It!, from what I have gathered, is essentially a watered down version of Wario Land 4. I haven't actually played 4, so if anyone reads this and disagrees, please leave your own opinions in the replies.
Shake It focuses less on exploration and puzzle solving, and more on challenges and achievements. Each level is usually a simple linear romp through a nice looking level with a specific gimmick. Most puzzles revolve using Wario's main shake move, or using the level's gimmick in a certain way. The main factor that links it to Wario Land 4 is that each level has an escape sequence. Instead of trying to search the level for more collectibles and get out, there are a few different types of escapes that you can make. There are simple Point B to Point A escapes, where you essentially go back through the level the same way you went through... usually with the added benefit of a boost pipe (don't know what to call it, it's that thing you enter that shoots you out running). However, most levels have you either going on a completely different path to get back to the starting point, or are the simple B to A escapes and have optional paths that require puzzle solving or quick reflexes. These paths usually have extra puzzles that require precise movements and timing to get more coins, get to the entrance faster, or holding one of the level's 3 treasures.
The escape sequences are a lot of fun in certain levels, and feel just kind of boring or annoying in others. My favorite escape sequence has got to be Whoopsy Desert, where you run along the roof of the buildings you were just inside, while you are trying to outrun a huge statue head. If you manage to outrun it, you will get this really invigorating run across a ton of Bomb Blocks, and if you are willing to risk it, you can grab a treasure too.
Before moving on, I'd like to say that I dislike Wario's Movement in this game. He feels very slow and not very easy to control. When compared to WL4, it seems like a big step down.
As I said, Shake it revolves much more on Achievements/challenges than exploration. each level has its own set of 3-5 (or maybe even 6 in some cases) challenges... Some challenges you have to do in separate playthroughs of the levels. And some are possible, but really hard to pull off all in one run. I honestly didn't know this when I played the game, as the game doesn't mention or encourage it, but you can retry from the checkpoint at the end of the level as many times as you want. Many challenges will be either completed or fulfilled during the escape sequence, so replaying it over and over again until you eventually perfect it is something people 100%ing the game will have to deal with. Finally getting a perfect run feels amazing, but there is so much you have to put up with in certain levels to get to that point.
There are only 2 transformations in the game... the returning Fire and Snowball transformations. Both appear about once or twice each in the main story (apparently they appear also in the brutally hard extra unlockable stages). Transformations are one of my favorite parts about the series, so it's pretty sad to look back on.
However, there are a few vehicles in some of the levels. There's a unicycle cart, a rocket propelled cart, and the subwarine... all of which use motion controls. These help break up the gameplay, but they also kind of detract from the game as well. Subwarine levels are especially annoying if you can't get used to the controls.
The bosses are actually pretty good. Some are incredibly easy, like Rollanratl, the first boss. Others are quite hard though, and they have some neat gimmicks that i enjoy.
    Overall...
I'd say it doesn't appeal to me. It was the first Wario Land I played, but it's really hard for me to go back and try to replay.
If you aren't going for the challenges, there isn't much to each level. The levels may look pretty, but the level design feels overall predictable and not very interesting to me. There isn't much exploration, especially not in the early game, so if you wanted to, you could just play through the game normally without worrying about the challenges... which makes the game not very interesting.
The older games focused on Exploration. Those were some of my favorite aspects of Wario Land 2 and 3. In 2 specifically, I would search every stage from top to bottom before I ended it. I loved looking around and seeing the secrets I could find. In my first playthtrough, I didn't explore at all, and because of it, I found the game quite boring. It wasn't until I realized that the game was more than just a platformer that I really started to enjoy the experience. I can't say the same for Shake It though...
Playing through without doing anything is boring... But I don't like the challenges either. They feel like a chore. It's not the same as exploring an expansive level. It's a bunch of annoying tasks that aren't very easy to pull off. The game is gorgeous, and the music is also amazing, but when it comes to gameplay, I would choose Land 2 & 3 any day. it felt like a good game, but not like a good Wario Land game.
It felt like it just looked at Land 4 and said... "ah, escape sequences. That's what Wario Land is about."
And don't get me wrong, the escape sequences are really well done in Shake it, but... it just doesn't have the same feel as 2 or 3.

Where in 4 is more action, straight forward and less puzzling than the others. Which isn't a bad thing. Just not my thing with the series is known for.

It would've even been more interesting if it was just a shallow Wario game, because they would at least have had a "Castle"/"hoarding"/"debts" theme to go along with it.
Just have a castle getting bigger and bigger the more coins you gathered, or a money room getting more filled, or etc.

Wario Land 3 was a great game to play as a kid.
It was difficult enough, the difficulty coming mostly from the immaculately designed levels that set you back just enough when you messed up, and the lack of character death was a huge motivator to just keep going.

Just gonna mention that Fiery Cavern is based on hell, hence the weird freeze stuff (hell freezes over). Hence its usage in the horror themed passage.
I'll also mention that the difficulty modes in Wario Land 4 introduce a new enemy or two, and change the ending a bit more too.
Also, there's a level design book something wrote about the game you can buy online. Named Game Design Companion: A Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4, it's an interesting look at the style of design in the game, in much the same vein as a very, very long Mark Brown video or Extra Credits episode.
Either way, nice video. The Wario Land series is definitely an underappreciated one, and your thoughts on why we may have seen them go for the motion controls/touch screen controls/mini games is definitely an intriguing one. I mean, Master of Disguise basically stuck a microgame on every treasure chest.
Let's hope this series makes a comeback soon.

    • @masonjones7777
      @masonjones7777 Před 5 lety

also most people say "shake it" is short because they don't bother with the bonus levels or challenges, all of which are pretty fun. (I dare you to beat the jungle levels without killing minions, tough as heck.)
motion controls are definitely better than credit is given, it does what you want it to when you want it to be done, it also doesn't cram them down you're throat like most games.
bosses are challenging towards the end, particularly the last 3 the first few are fine by their own merits but don't test you much.
definitely solid and plenty of charm, especially the escape portions.

About the bosses of Wario Land 1, I honestly would say it's not much different from regular Mario games or anything.
They're all pretty easy. I think it's just a common thing in most Nintendo platform games. It's easier to count the ones that are hard.
Anyway, I feel like the reason for the lack of Wario Land games recently is because Nintendo was playing pretty safe in the last few years, and Wario Land is a pretty weird experimental series, it doesn't have a consistent gameplay style, which probably meant they didn't know what to do with it. Wario Land has flaws, but it's fun and it definitely has potential, I don't honestly see it coming back any time soon. But it would be cool if it did.
