    Eli, you're spot on. I am a linguist (I use programming to further my research, which is why I subscribed to you). When I was an undergrad student, I wrote emails to well known and accomplished linguists to ask for advice. It was a longshot, but I wanted advice from someone outside my college group. Surprisingly, more than 12 out of 20 responded positively, and I was able to discuss my questions with them. These were phDs who write a book every other year, are guest speakers for TED, news channels, etc. They had no reason to help me out, but I guess they figured that if I were courageous enough to write to them, that I was worth helping. I still don't know.
    All of this just to say that you are right. People, students especially, should talk to those who went before them.

      Mariusz Zaleski That's probably true. I know that most of the academics I reached out to were raised in low income situations, so they may have felt more inclined to look out for the little people. I've also heard that academics are usually generous with correspondence.

      I feel like I'm trying to learn to much at once and when it comes time for me to actually WRITE code from scratch it becomes a memory issue, Im so used to basically re-writing the code given via instructions! Whats the best way for me to prosper in the computer programming industry, I want to eventually be a software engineer / programmer.

    Hey Eli, love your vids. Gonna ask for some feedback should you see this. I'm currently am finishing up my AAS in Computer Graphics and Programming, and am thinking of getting my BS in Network Security. Its a field I have gained a huge passion for recently and have been teaching myself for a few months (lots of books).
    Now, it seems when I read stories from most programmers, they often have a BS in Computer Science. Is getting that going to be a better option, even though I am focusing on security?
    Thanks!

    @network_king Před 9 lety

    Great vid Eli. I kind of realized this the hard way, no real harm to myself, but great case of the things you mentioned.
    Due to a relative working at the local college I got to job shadow with one of the techs. My relative was like ask him to show you how he fixed my computer see if he laughs. At the time I thought what is this about? I stayed in contact with him and a coworker over my time as a student going for my AAS in networking. The person I job shadowed with (bad tech) was still doing a little here and there for encouragement, etc.
    Eventually I got the info on that joke from my relative. The bad tech was doing something and somehow all my relatives documents just vanished tech is like whatever no apology nothing. Like 10 yrs worth of tests, quizes, etc gone. Finally, the other tech told me what happened and said he deleted the user profile because that was an outlook issue and he didn't understand where my documents, etc were. I thought oh my gosh I knew that in high school that's basic computers.
    They had some old servers wanted to make into a NAS type solution. Wanted to install better HDD. The bad tech goes to HP says this is maxed out as is nothing we can do. See if there is a newer BIOS to flash that has better support, just then the admin walks in, the bad tech looks at him says these servers are currently maxed out then he says or we can look into my idea and see if there is a new bios for it the admin just kind of looks at me with a kind of pleased and surprised look.
    I was given the opportunity to do internship and I decided to do it at the school. The Admin, bad tech were like I'm not going to be responsible for him. I thought so much for that idea. Then like out of nowhere the other tech I never expected anything from comes up is like okay let's do this.
    I was a bit nervous as she is foreign and English isn't the best and I have minor autism. I thought this could be ugly we had a few misunderstandings we professionally resolved them. At one point, she was like I think you need a mentor which when you're about to graduate I kind of found insulting.
    I get a call on new years weekend this year it is the foreign tech that I worked with. She is like I have a friend that has an SMB and he had a local contractor do a server upgrade and now things aren't working right and he thought it may be DNS. With my okay she contacts him says okay to call me. He calls go in about 45 min after quick tour and various diagnostics I determine that DHCP was still on the old server, and never moved and DNS pointed to old server. I've been doing small contract work for him about 6 months now. Some good sized and stressful projects for him had some hiccups. She is like your doing good, and when mentioned the issues she is like that will happen sometimes tell her my diagnostic process for this issue she is like that's a good way to go. (This is kind of a person that will just say what's on their mind for most part if you think is mean tough it's better that way.) She used to talk to me like I had a lot to learn, now there's a possible job there and would be a promotion for her it seems she actually sees me as one of her biggest competitors.
    After I graduated I started job search got nothing for a year so decided to go for BS degree as that was what most jobs asked for. In this time they cut the tech I did job shadow with to part time, then his attitude went south it seems. Coworker told him to get A+ cert he failed the first part and gave up. Shortly after I returned from winter break I hear rumor the admin walked in in the morning told this tech he had the rest of the day then was laid off.
    TLDR: Just as Eli said look for clues, evaluate is the work this person does of any company value. If not they are probly using it to feel good or say look I'm doing ... for so so.
    If you want a mentor get one that is not real afraid to speak their mind or give the tough love type treatment. Go for the later one short term you may get some feelings hurt, etc. long run though I think would pay off huge. She even pushed me to do self-study CCNA just to add to my big 3 comptia, fiber cabling certs

      Hey Jordan,
      If I were in your shoes I would go into security or big data. Security is going to be crucial as we turn from defending unorganized hackers to defending from organized nation states. And big data is going to crucial for crunching all the data gathered by isp's & local pipe providers to target market/sell stuff to consumers.
      So do you want to be superman saving the planet from evil doers or the guy who discovers the key to getting people exactly what they most need and desire.
      The one down side to any desk job however is that your future job can be outsourced to cheaper labor or software . However, I think with the insane need in both of these fields you won't have to worry about that for a long time.
      I chose to work in the physical world so my job could not be outsourced. I spend most of my time driving around and installing or troubleshooting pretty basic stuff. Some days I feel like a monkey turning screws and pulling wire/fiber. I like that work though and I am happy.
      Also look at other factors such as where you want to live, how healthy you want to be, what kind of hours you are willing to sit in front of a screen and so on. Do you want a family, a house, a sailboat...? All of this factors in.
      Plan the life you want and figure out which path will help you get there.
      Good Luck Sir!

    I appreciate your videos; they make sense to me. I don't understand however why you threw in that comment about being caustic and non caring. Of course we're not friends, you have never met me or most of your viewers. I know that you do care about viewers however (even if your primary purpose is the money) because you could easily make up a bunch of bull that would get as many or more viewers, but instead you give us your take on everything, and a lot of good advice. You also said you would give a person an hour of time free. So you claim to dislike us (or not care one way or the other) and yet show you care by your actions and "tough love", not wanting us to be manipulated....keep up the good work, your videos are entertaining as well as instructional.

    Hello,
    I finished college some time ago and got bachelor degree in Computer Engineering therefore receiving IT Network administrator certificate. Few years later working in IT support i managed to save enough money and got Ethical Hacker certificate. Now I am working as IT network administrator and i am planning on getting MCSE Server infrastructure. People are saying that i should get CCNA and CCNP first but i don't see the point at the moment as current company don't have any cisco devices. So I have plans to get MCSE server infrastructure then MCSE Private Cloud (or maybe you suggest something else for improving skills in cloud technologies). After that i am thinking for finishing WMware course but have no clue about that at all... Some people saying that after MCSE i should got for citrix xenapp courses and etc. Any suggestions? Do you think i am on right path? I want to be proper IT admin and later proper IT security administrator. Don't want to be engineer.. I know what if you have right certificates you could get decent wage (of course with proper experience too). I am even thinking that would be cool to work as cloud security administrator. or Endpoint security admin... Give me suggestions here please? Trying to build up carer where i would earn 35000£ with out thinking about money problem where now i just get roughly around 25000£.
    All my friends are programmers ( i don't like programming i like supporting/administrating office/company) so I don't ask their advice as most of the time they don't have clue in IT admin stuff..

    wait... whaaaat? did you just say that the A+ certification is worthless? hold on.
    i wanted to be a computer technician out of high school 4 years ago so i went to my high school job search program when i said that i would like to work in computers.i went to this private school near where i lived that supported the 801-802 exam, i completed the course and took the test only to fail twice. not realizing that the test itself was very difficult and the school i went to didn't really prepare me for it so i dropped out to focus on working. fast forward to now, my passion for computer hasn't gone anywhere. i want to do more with computers like programing, get a degree collage but i still want to get that A+.

    • @Kraven83
      @Kraven83 Před 9 lety

      lazy gizmo In a lenghty video that I watched a while back, Eli recommended Microsoft MCSA Windows Server 2012. Than, on top of that, a CCNA. That's the basic combo for a newbie. Only if you already work in a place that uses other technology (like Exchange or SQL Server for example), than you should think to "derail" from that standard advice.

It's a good certification for getting your foot in the door at your first IT job and the material that you learn while studying for it is valuable information. I have an A+, Network+, Security+ and CCNA and ALL of them have been beneficial to me.

    You say spaghetti monster. Why would you say or reference God at all if you did not believe in Him to say spaghetti monster? Eli as smart as you are, you honestly believe there is no God. I thought you were wiser than that. Good vid outside of the ref of Spaghetti monster.

    I normally like your videos, but this one is just pure babble. Everything you wanted to say was said in the first 30 seconds, the rest of the video is just repetition.
