Eli, whenever I want to see and enjoy computer things in practice, I watch your shows; as a first step. Your language, appearance, presentations ... are natural. I think you have passion of sharing what you know. Even though I was anti-hacker of these NAS protocols 8 years ago, I enjoy the way you explain how things work to real users. Keep the joy full journey going on, Eli the ComputerGod -):

Just one comment as this video is almost 3 years old, many of the SANs today are moving to Ethernet from Fiber Channel utilizing fast connection of 1-/25/40 and even 100Gb/s Ethernet and with new virtualization switching protocols such as VXLAN, SRIOV the whole SAN gets much much faster.

a SAN is like a RAID of NAS'. Have you ever tried explaining to an "IT" manager why the very expensive new backup device in the lovely new SAN in the lovely new data centre has to be physically relocated across campus to the same old data room as the NAS based database so it can be connected directly to the NAS' back-plane because the campus' shared ATM link, although fibre too, is just not fast enough to complete an incremental, much less a full BU in the allocated window, no matter how many times he says "That can't be, try with a new tape set"? Five years after I moved on, I met the new 'Server Admin' and she was still having the same argument with the same manager.
I don't know why I am watching this, I guess it's a credit to your screen presence, I just wanted to see how you tackled it, but your problem with trying to explain virtualisation to the great uninitiated, a rather simple concept really, has brought back all the reasons why I got out of IT.

I am focusing on just making my own data and that of 5 or 8 machines safe, and keeping the corrupt files from being the ones replicated. I appreciate the way you teach, bringing the subject down to us and letting us know when we really should grab a textbook if we want to read up and understand the subject.

Yep, companies can get real techs.
Makes you wonder, what top secret underground bases, all around the world, what techs they have access too.
Technology at our level is held back, as the public does not need too fast of equipment. Makes you wonder, what the highly secret bases of top gov, get access too.
I am glad you pointed out to most here, that techs are available, that you will probably never see in your life, as the public does not need such advanced techs.
Good video, showing, most of the public, how technology is more advanced, then the public are being told.

A bit of clarification regarding a failed host in a VMware cluster: If a host fails without notice, all the VMs on the host will fail. Barring specific configuration settings, this is the end of the story. If the cluster is configured for HA (high availability) and the VMs are located on shared storage (NAS or SAN), a restart of each VM will occur on another host. Clusters in which FT (fault tolerance) is active already have a running spare of each VM and will quickly switch to it.

I can see the point you're trying to make, but strictly speaking, SMB and CIFS don't allow you to copy and paste files, the operating system is responsible for that. You can however issue redirect requests which can eliminate the client system as middle man and have file servers transfer to each other. This isn't synonymous with the copy and paste function, however. Sorry for being a nurderer, this is really a good video.

Because there are other points of failure besides simply hard drive failure. If the CPU, raid card, PSU, LAN port, etc. goes out on your NAS box, it does not matter if your hard drives are working or not. A SAN arrangement protects against other points of failure.

Related topic. I have friends in I.T dept. at local community college, i got my hands on an old HDS SAN. Story i was told was that another community college in the state was going to retire it for some reason. The admin at local one got it thinking could use to replace their tape backup. I know was there on shelf in 2010, Admin kept saying was going to setup, but never did. I was there other day, said admin just decided he didn't think he could do and didn't want to contract hitachi to do. Told tech recycle it or give to me.
The sytem is by Hitachi data sytems, a thunder 9500V series. I believe it is a Silo type SAN has like 7 drive boxes, and some form of controller. I have yet to figure out cabaling. Uses coper FC 2 GB. The controler box has 2 4 port modules. Each module has path 0-3 not labeled in or out. The drive bos have 2 interface module each with 2 ports an in and out. seem to say path 0in path 0out on module, 2nd module i think 0 becomes 1i/1out.
I thought it would go like controler>drrive aray 1 path 0in, Aray 1 path 0 out to path 0 in on array 2, etc for all units, then loop back to the out on the controller.
I found 1 picture on google of a setup, it looks like it goes controler path 0in&out to aray 1 one cable per aray card, aray card to next repeating patern.
I've reset both cpu boards on contoller, all i get is flashing error lights. Also the battery packs on the controler say alarm with replacement date of like mid 2000.
wondering if you know anything about. I looked on spiceworks, basically explained similarly, a few people remembered using, but nobody seems to know setup, or how to configure once running. I even contacted HDS on youtube, and a few other places. Expalining i wanted to learn about SANs, and would just be for basically a personal lab type setup. I've never got a response, i understnd i wouldn't be a big priority, but would think they would want people to learn to use there products, or at least say sorry we can't help.
SAN is only 24TB, IMO it's not really even worth using as a storage platform because is so old, and can make a small server with that and 4-5 HDD. Just be primarly for like a lab, if i can't get anywhere by mid august i'm just going to scrap it for parts HDD, etc and recycle any useless stuff.

Have you made any progress with this? If not, detail your requirements, ie. What compliance regulations are you bound to in terms of data protection and backup etc, and I'll be happy to help (and maybe learn along the way). Cheers.

    • @network_king
      @network_king Před 9 lety

Jamie Evans This was given to me because wasn't worth messing with for them. Was personal project try to lean about SANs and store stuff. I figured out some of it HDS was kind enough to get me access to the stuff i needed to try to learn about it. Unfortunately all i could do is power it up. There was about $4K worth of failed batteries in it. I decided all the power it would take, and most the drives being 5+ yrs old to just part it out.
I recycled it got about $25 for the metal, and the drives all rattled around when took out. Usally you hear that the drive may work for a bit then it's going to die. I took them all apart to use for speakers. Most were only like 100GB anyhow.
