  • CAUTION: HIKE AT YOUR OWN RISK.......The Trap Dike hike up Mount Colden is the most DANGEROUS hike in ADK. It is an unmarked, unmaintained route which requires class 4 rock scrambling skills and extreme caution scaling the bare slide. This is an advanced hike and should not be attempted by beginners or those afraid of heights and steep inclines

    We did the dike in mid Oct starting about noon. We carried full packs in the event the weather turned bad. The sky was overcast; we feared rain, but it didn't. We started climbing the dike's ledges at Preacher's Bench. About a third of the way up we jumped off the dike and onto the slide just to the south. The face of the slide was a bit wet. Towards the afternoon the glace ice formed and we had to friction climb carefully. There is a large bolder at the summit and used that as our visual end point. As we climbed, the ice patches began to connect, so we followed near the low brush and moss line just to the north in case we had to jump off the face. We reached the summit at about 5:30 pm having friction climbed the entire route. As we rested it began to snow, so we decided to spent the night on top. It was allowed then when covered with snow. The evening view surrounded by the peaks and stars was incredible. Next morning we woke early and and make it back to the car. So a quick caution; both my friend - he did the Denali glacier - and I - 30 years of climbing both day and night mountain hikes knew how quickly the weather conditions change in the DAKS. We came prepared and were rewarded with an awesome experience.

    Intense and steep! Love the map animations. Great narration too. I remember those stairs coming down Colden. That is where I slipped and stabbed my arm with a stick. Well done video.

      Glad you enjoyed the new video tricks as they will come in handy for future posts. Trap Dike is the REAL deal and we came very close to crossing the line between "CRAZY" and "STUPID". Happy Adventuring.....

      @@TheAdventureHeads peanut butter chocolate candy is a must for me on my hikes. The bag of PB m&m's I brought with me up cascade and Porter was enormous and that hike was so easy. lol

      @@jillleturgey1001 Whats ironic for me as a 46er and 9 short of winter 46er is that Cascade and Porter were my most challenging. Sad to say it took me 3 attempts to get both, but hey that will have to be part of future video.

    I can only imagine how nerve-wracking it would be to lose your glasses. I have terrible vision, but really quite good with contacts or glasses. I would certainly be behind the 8-ball if I lost them! Hope you had another pair in the car. I carry at least one, usually two, alternatives if I should lose mine.

    I would need to reward myself with a double shot of Tequila at the base of the Trap Dike.

      Thanks for watching Daniel. I agree a double shot is worthy but more appropriate at the summit than at the base. But hey to each their own. Did you complete the hike?

      @@TheAdventureHeads No, I haven't. I've been tempted but worry I'd have a freak out moment (or two). Colden is one of my favorite mountains and I've passed the trap dyke on the Hitch-up Matildas or the frozen lake, wondering if I'll ever would make a go at it. Eh, I have time. Exposure is not my thing but I had no problem with the "Cliffs of Saddleback" after fearing it for so long.

      @@qdogg290 Well Cliffs of Saddleback are tricky but Trap Dike takes it to another level. I would suggest going with someone to show you the best routes to take are there are a couple tricky sections. Good weather in the summer is a bonus. Our fall trip with spots of ice made it extremely nerve racking in several spots. Totally doable but not for the faint of heart. Happy Adventuring.

    Question- what did you need your harnesses for? Did you have to use rope??

    • @TheAdventureHeads
      @TheAdventureHeads  Před 3 lety

      The Harness was optional. We used it to assist my daughter climbing the cold, wet waterfall chimney for about 20 feet. We used 30 feet of nylon webbing instead of a full static rope.

      As you know always an advenuture. No rescue is always good in my book but we surely were close to crossing the line between crazy and stupid.
