    This is great advice, at least it is for me as I have been strangling the club for years to the point where hands, fingers, arms and shoulders hurt, especially on my left side due to extreme tension. I have spent a load of money on lessons, on practice balls and getting nowhere. This video and others of yours, where you discuss the lag and emphasize the looseness in the wrists, has transformed my interpretation of a golf swing. I have always felt that I had to really manipulate the the club to get the club head to the ball, never really knowing whether the club head would reach the ball closed, square or open. I had never felt the actual swing weight of a club until now. Thank you very much for your instruction, it is really beneficial to me.

    I just started doing that following learning how to lead the club at impact and the experience is mind-blowing. You can really hear the club acceleration and "swoosh". I'm having trouble finding a balance between accuracy and staying loose. Still trying to find out the sweet spot where I have plenty of control and stop my arms straight in front of me like you point out in your other video.

    This video is just insane... Not in negative way but in positive!
    I have struggled with my hands and fat shots. Yesterday I watched this video for the very first time. Well I thought yes great instruction but nothing special. In the evening I went to driving range and again struggled with fat hits and hands felt tight and swing wasn´'t smooth at all. Then I remembered this video and smooth move with club and Your instructions. BANG! After that swing thought my back swing changed, club went in good position and I didn´t make any fat shots in the practice session! That thought I got in my head brought nice smooth feeling in back swing and in transition phase. Hits were really crisp. And the weirdest thing... In the beginning of session as I was struggling with bad shots I shot 7 iron with good hit something like 130-135meters (142-147yd) and in the end of session I shot that same distance with my 9 iron!
    Thank You for this great instructional video series!

    I've watched this particular video numerous times it's one of my favorites of yours - I absolutely understand this concept and am in agreement, the issue I have when incorporating a more loose wrist feeling is that after a bit I begin to lose control of the clubface. I feel like I am close to becoming a very good golfer and what I need to get there most is more distance without "swinging harder" which is where lag comes in. Having to hit a 4 or 5i after every drive is taxing, if I can develop more lag (distance) without losing too much control I will be on my way bc my short game is well above average. As usual a great video 👍🏿

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Michael.
      I hear your dilemma. I'g go from more 'control' and work on club face, to loosening up (lag), then keep recycling. Remember, pliable wrists (lag) as you start down doesn't mean they have to be soft and unstable at impact.
      Hope this helps.
      Best, Adam

      @@Scratchgolfacademy thanks Adam I appreciate ur time. Two questions if u don't mind: 1 in order to generate lag it seems to be a requirement that the down swing begin a moment before the backswing would complete, is that correct?
      2 what are the levels of coaching/membership offered thru ur website? It's not perfectly clear to me.
      Thanks again for your time 🙂

    • @Scratchgolfacademy

      Yes, downswing effectively starts before backswing (so to speak) ends. Regards SGA Premium, there is a great deal of video content there, in the form of courses on each part of the game. Members can also get online coaching from me personally through the free V1 app. If you go to www,scratchgolfacademy.com you can find more out.

    Dear Adam - this video speaks to a fundamental aspect of the swing both back and down. I assume there are a few other, fundamental/foundational elements that the starting golfer should work on in order to create a solid yet fluid athleticism in the swing. If you were to create a Patreon account or even a structured series of tutorials that combines these into a progressive learning and skills development program I would happily pay.
    Your content, it's presentation and conception is first rate. Appreciate you.

    great video clear and easy to understand keep them coming. quick question I have a swing speed around 100mph bought a second hand 3wood with x stiff and 13deg loft, tbe reason I bought it is my trajectory is really high , I still hit this club high do you think trying this swing you advocate in this video will be beneficial for my kind of problem? ps for example my 6 iron I hit around 185 but is really high compared to my fellow golfers

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  Před 8 lety

      +Michael Duffy
      Michael,
      Thanks. Yes, it sounds to me like you have too much 'dynamic loft' (true loft at impact). This is pretty much always related to releasing the club a little early. Sounds like with your speed you've got lag early in the downswing, then lose some closer to impact.
      Practice this drill, then try to hit some low stinger 7 irons (mid distance) to get the feel.
      Best, Adam

    One thing I use is practicing the lag in a full swing but letting your right hand come off the club halfway down, this encourages the right hand whip of the club.

    I clearly have mental issues, because my default swing is a total wristy flip at the bottom.. I do wonder if my wrists are too loose. I'm an overswinger. But!!! Either way: I have a suggestion/question @Adam: Assuming that lag, and release, and shaft flex are related, do you think it follows that a stiff shaft user could learn lag from using a reg shaft? (notwithstanding your excellent tips in this vid). Mike

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  Před 6 lety

      Mike,
      Thanks for the question. I don't doubt it's possible to get feel from a softer shaft flex, but I'd think you could do it with the clubs you use normally (assuming they are a good fit for you). Try my video on "How to stop flipping the club" it might balance the soft wrist idea with a stable impact. Hope this helps.

    Is this only a practice drill or you have to feel and move so loose also in your final swing? I love the feeling of this drill, but it's hard for me to regain the feeling when i return next day on the practice range, don't know if it make sense.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the question. I think that as the swing picks up speed and energy the club effectively gets heavier, which requires some amount of firming up of the wrists and arms. You just have to practice end experiment until you can control the club (especially near impact) but still have enough mobility to let the club load.
      I hope this helps. Best, Adam

    • @roadman1823
      @roadman1823 Před 7 lety

      Yes it helps a lot, thank you for sharing all these informations. So what i'm trying to do now is to set up and feel the arms loose like if they were a rope to which it is attached the club, so moving the core and so the shoulder try to feel like a pendulum, wait until the club reaches it's peak and then start the downswing. I feel much more speed in this way, but again it is a feeling that i'm not always able to find when i practice.
      It is a good way to swing for you? In this way the arms seems to loose the "connection" with the body (i don't know if it is a good thing), but looking in camera i notice that i rotate the shoulder more with respect to a swing 'more connected' if it make sense, maybe because i'm more relaxed.
      Again thanks in advance for the answer.

    • @Scratchgolfacademy
      @Scratchgolfacademy  Před 7 lety

      I'd say the arms remain somewhat connected to the torso, but not what you'd call fixed. They will slide up the body a bit going back, then lag in the change of direction, but by impact will have been thrust forward, about in front of the left leg.
      Best, Adam

  • @dtgps
    @dtgps Před 4 lety

    What makes the flail, or lag happen is to have all 5 levers working in a common plane. Ben Hogan called it the SLOT.
    No one will be able to cast if they pull all 5 levers in a common plane, letting torso turn square the clubface. Thank you, Ben Hogan.
